Will be interested to see what you think, Jennie - I read it a while back and still have some mixed feelings.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Just finished off all 24 volumes of Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys manga.

Highly, incredibly, extremely recommended to any manga fans. Or if you've never read manga before, why not start with one of the best?

I just finished The Ninth Orphan and it was really not good. :(

Patricia (pjaye) Today I started The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty.
Only a little way in, but so far so good.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I've started The Golem and the Jinni; I love it. totally mesmerizing.

message 6961: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I'm reading The Children of the King by Sonya Hartnett - one of my books for the summer reading challenge - and I'm enjoying it, although it isn't quite what I expected. If I'd realised exactly what it involved, I could have held off reading it til 2014 and used it for my fantasy read for the Aussie author challenge!

(view spoiler)

message 6962: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Oh, and I finished Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome.

Don't bother - 2★, funny in parts, but on the whole, tedious to the point of tears (almost) and the funny parts are not regular or significant enough to relieve the tedium!

I thought this was fantastically written - not an easy choice of subject matter, but really well-handled by J.K. Rowling. I hope you're enjoying it, Jennie.

I agree - I've listened to that on audiobook and it's great! I love listening to Phryne Fisher on audio - the narrator is usually Stephanie Daniels (does anyone remember her in the movie, The Castle? She's the unsympathetic council worker who talks to Mr Kerrigan) and she's got the perfect accent for Phryne Fisher!

Marianne (cloggiedownunder) | 9975 comments Was not impressed by Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro despite the hype. Not sure if I'll bother with any more by Kazuo Ishiguro. Although I see the movie DVD is available from the library, I can watch that while I'm ironing so it won't be a huge waste if it's no good.

Marianne, I think When We Were Orphans is his best book by far; a realistic story, historical fiction. I wasn't overly impressed with Never Let Me Go either but loved When We Were Orphans.

A tear or two?
OMG I did the full on ugly cry complete with blowing giant snot bubbles and went to bed with a massive headache!
All the next day people kept asking me if I was OK, because I still had red swollen eyes.
That book *really* got to me.

Liza Perrat (httpwwwgoodreadscomlizaperrat) Just started The Falcons of Fire and Ice by Karen Maitland, one of my fave authors. Also just finished Sorry by Aussie author, Gail Jones... a fabulous read.

Best take a big box of tissues to the movie. The trailer made me tear up.

message 6986: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (pjaye) I know!
My plan is to go to a late night session, without makeup on...lol
That way I can get my tear stained face and red eyes home without too many people seeing me.

A friend and I were going to see it in Gold Class, but I think I'd feel too guilty eating and drinking while they are all hungry.

I made that mistake in Les Miserables, my wine and mini hamburgers arrived just as Fantine was getting her teeth pulled out and selling her hair...I had to choke my food down through my tears and felt I so bad!

For TBT I'm going to sit at the back with a giant handful of tissues and try not to sob too loudly.

message 6987: by Angela (new)

Angela | 351 comments You are all making me want to read TBT so badly my fingers are itching! So bummed it's not on my Summer Challenge list - I can see it on my shelf beckoning! Debating whether to see the film first.....,

We all had a little packet of tissues with us in Les Mis. The problem was that they were impossible to open ones - you know, the ones that are sealed in completely human proof plastic sheeting which has been super glued at each end. So apart from the sniffing there was this kind of loud crunchy cellophany noise as each of us attempted to break into the tissues...

Mine took forever to open, and in Gold Class (our indulgence) it was very obvious!

message 6990: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments So the moral of the story is open your tissues before the movie starts!! Not sure whether to go see this or not - I think I'm the only person on earth who didn't enjoy the book, but maybe the movie will reveal some vital element I missed in the book...

Patricia (pjaye) I would have loved to see Zusak!
I got an invitation to the screening with the Q&A with Geoffry Rush before the movie. Unfortunately it was for next Monday and I couldn't go.
Might've be kind of tricky to get an audiobook signed though!

I did get up at 5 am and attend the webchat he did through GR a few months ago - he seems like such a nice guy
