Jill H. (bucs1960) Welcome Narayanan......... so glad you could join us. I hope the housing market is stable in your area and that you are doing well.

As you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post. Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how books you mention should look:

Iggy (iggy82) Hello all,
My name is Igor Faynshteyn (nickname: Iggy). I graduated with degrees in Biology, having taken only one history course in 5 years in college. Two years after, I went to law school and now work as an attorney.

I developed an interest in history only a couple of years ago when I picked up a book The Summer of 1787 The Men Who Invented the Constitution by David O. Stewart by David O. Stewart . It got me so interested in the early American history that I subsequently purchased about 20 more books on American history, all of which are scholarly and many are Pulitzer Prize winning books. I set a task for myself to read all of my history books in a chronological order, more or less, so that I can understand the full context, and a deeper understanding of causes and effects.
I am also interested in European history, Cold War history and contemporary history/political science. And I have 2 shelves of books on these topics, although I haven't gotten to them yet.

I realized that the reason I never had even a passing interest in history before, is because of the way it was taught in high schools and even colleges. The emphasis was on memorizing and testing, rather than on analysis and interpretation.

Currently I am reading The Age of Federalism The Early American Republic, 1788-1800 by Stanley Elkins by Stanley Elkins and Eric McKitrick .

Unfortunately, I am unable to read very much on a day to day basis, because I work around 10-12 hours daily. So the little reading I end up doing takes places on the train to and from work, before going to bed and on weekends.

I hope this group will provide a forum for interesting and intellectually stimulating discussions about history.

Thank you for allowing me to join, and welcoming me.

Iggy

Stefan | 1 comments Dear fellow readers!
My name is Stefan Seitz and I’m from Austria. I was born in 1984 and I’m interested in history since I can remember. As a child it were pre-historic themes like the dinosaurs, exhibits of them and of art like Claude Monet and documentaries on TV about all topics from Stone Age to Space Age that inspired my imagination and intellect (besides Star Trek ;-). Later on it was World War II and in recent years, my focus of interest is often the history and politics of the USA and how it affects the world. I will start my participation in book-reading-club with Gordon S. Woods book “The Idea of America- Reflections on the Birth of the United States” which was recommended and which I’m looking forward to read. Any false grammar is out of ignorance and I apologize for it, as English isn’t my native tongue. Again I want to express my thanks for the opportunity to participate in “The History Book Club” Kind regards Stefan

Mark Thomas-James | 1 comments Hello History Book Club,

My name is Mark Thomas –James. I live in the UK not far from Stratford-upon-Avon.

I find reading history fascinating because it helps explain how we all arrived in the twenty-first century and is even more intriguing when there is debate over the facts. As a chap with a big cigar once said, ‘History is written by the victors.’ A wise man indeed he was, and perhaps alludes to the notion that although the story of the vanquished is probably harder to discover it is often as interesting.

My particular interest is Tudor history 1485-1605, being the Battle of Bosworth to the Gunpowder Plot - which does overlap into the Stuart period - because the influence Catholic v Reformist v Protestant had on Europe, consequently the Americas and the wider world. There was a massive, but today little known rebellion in 1536 against Henry VIII called The Pilgrimage of Grace and the life we know today would be very different if it had succeeded.

That said history is a succession of turning points since way before Christ, from Emperor Constantine to Pearl Harbour, which have directed events, and today we have Obama versus Putin enacting the next chapters.

I believe all history is enthralling and in reading it there is no such thing as a dull moment!

Best Regards

Mark Thomas-James

Freedom, reenslavement and the rise of capitalism in the south during Reconstruction.

It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them.

When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how books you mention should look:

Mar Fierros | 1 comments Hello everyone, my name is Maria del Mar (Maria or Mar is best and shorter), I'm a Physical Therapist from Mexico city, and I love to take my mind off from work and medical journals by reading History books and Historical Fiction, anything from American, British, European Renaissance, Mexican and Spanish history, you name it. Plus it's hard in Mexico to find a Book Club and I miss feedback!! Plus, next week I will be taking five days from work to sunny Puerto Vallarta and any book suggestions will be more than welcomed!!

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) Welcome Mar. Re your request for something to read on your vacation, if you like historical mysteries, I can heartily recommend Roman Blood. Set in ancient Rome around 80 BC, it's based on Cicero's first important case, defending a man accused of murdering his father. It's a great portrayal of Rome, Cicero and the fictional detective Gordianus. It's also the first in a wonderful series of mysteries, each one based on an actual historical event.
