Sofia Gabel (sofiadianagabel) | 1 comments Hi, I'm not sure if I ever introduced myself or not! But, if I didn't, hi everyone! I'm originally from Australia but now live in southern California. I love historical fiction and ancient history and right now I'm a graduate student in archaeology. So, hello to you all!

Susan (smuir25) | 2 comments Hi Diane (DL), great to hear from you. Normandy is fascinating. I found the war graves very moving as well as all the fascinating sites. I particularly enjoyed visiting Pegasus Bridge, which was at the forefront of the airborne involvement. So glad I've found this club! Susan

Bryan Craig Welcome Susan. The Russian Revolution is a fascinating topic.

Hi Jordan, I'm just exploring Asia myself with such a vast history.

Good for you Diane that you took a history elective. I would have done the same as long as I had a great teacher. It sounds like you did.

Welcome, Sofia. I have a few archaeology friends and they love their job!

CloverGreen13 | 1 comments Hello everyone! My name is Clover... well not really, but for the purposes of this profile, let's say it is :) I'm actually quite new to Goodreads and I am so excited to find such a varied and vibrant groups community. I'm a university student, working on a double major in history and film and a minor in art history. My main historical interests are early/revolutionary and modern diplomatic US history, as well modern global revolutions.
In my free time I like to watch films and I hope to work in art direction/production someday. I enjoy drawing and putting color to canvas as often as possible. I love to cook, spend time with my two dogs (all animals in general, really), whip up handmade soap, plant squash and jack-o-lantern pumpkins for fall. Halloween is kinda big in my family, lol.
I'm so excited that this group has a wide international readership, because I love to meet people from all over the world and I hope that I can travel someday. So, I love to study languages! I'm currently studying Italian, I'm fluent in Spanish and hope to revisit my Latin very soon. My French is very limited, but I have a great accent if I do say so myself. Lol, anyway, that's more than any of you probably want to know!
Ciao!

Bryan Craig Hello, Clover. You came to the right place.

Take a look at our American government topics:
http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you are ready to cite a book. (There is a link on the top right of the reply box.) It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link at the very bottom of the post after your text. Because it is on the bottom, it calls the reader's attention to the book/author and increases the readability of your posts.

This is how a book should look:

The Passage of Power (The Years of Lyndon Johnson, #4) by Robert A. Caro by Robert A. Caro Robert A. Caro

More information:

Take a few moments to read the orientation:

I have a B.A. in History--emphasis Modern European--from the U of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I haven't used it professionally, other than to aid me in assorted research projects, but it's still a daily companion.

My areas of special interest are Victorian Britain, Celtic Britain & the Arthuriad, and WWII, the European Theater.

When I was in high school in Camden, New Jersey back in the 50's the classes that I disliked the most were the History classes. Even in College it was my worse subject. Why? I always felt the past was the past and we couldn't do anything about it.
NOW, at 71, that's all I read -- the History stuff, especially WWll. I'm not limited to that period. Anything that's HISTORY is good enough for me.

Hello Charles - I have already posted to you on another thread - I have to remove a small segment because of our no self promotion rule here and invite you to repost absent that sentence. Many thanks for your understanding in advance.

Hello. My name is Charles. I'm a retired librarian who specialized in humanities collection development, a novelist and book artist. For years I have had an avocational interest in history, from the time when I worked with two historians in a local history archive. And of course I could hardly avoid some study of literary and cultural history -- it was the Menand discussion which drew me in, in fact -- "". So I thought it was time I expanded my discussion groups a bit.

message 1788: by Corvus (new)

Corvus | 1 comments Hi there! I'm Corvus, from Denver, and I like history.

I came here hunting for book recommendations, really. I've been reading a lot of popular history nonfiction lately; the sort of books that are less textbook, more storytelling. In hunting for more such stories from history, I've run into a bit of an annoyance: the vast majority of popular history books I can find recommendations and such for are "western" history- the US, Europe, and tons of World War Whatever stuff.

I've got nothing against US/Europe/etc history, but I'm really hoping to find good nonfiction stories from, well, the rest of time and space. They're out there, right? I feel like most the books I've found on, say, Ancient Egypt or Edo Japan or the Mughal Empire are usually very textbook-tome-ish. But perhaps I just haven't figured out where to look?

So I'm going to poke around discussions for a while and hey, if you've got anything you think I'd love, let me know!

It makes things so much easier for people to see your book recommendations, because they can see the cover and the links to the author. And it helps the Goodreads software connect books with groups that talk about them. When citing a book and/or author, please put the book cover, author's photo and author's link after all of the text of your post at the bottom of the post. Placement at the bottom of the post calls the reader's attention to the book and/or author and increases the readability of your post. This is how books you mention should look:

Welcome Robbi. I'm sure you'll find plenty of book recommendations here.

As you get started please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the "add book/author" feature when you comment. Matthew Wilcox | 1 comments Hello everyone! My name is Matthew Wilcox, and I currently live in the United States in Alexandria, VA. My wife introduced me to Goodreads, and after browsing the website for a while, I must say I am hooked. She told me that I may be interested in The History Book Club because I love reading about history. My favorite historical figure is George Washington, and I absolutely love Roman history. My favorite Roman history author is Anthony Everitt, but I'm always looking for other authors to enjoy as well. I'm excited to be a part of this club, so I can be introduced to even more authors of history.

Miguel Fernandez | 1 comments Hi, my name is miguel and i am an argentine currently living in Brazil. I never liked history in school but it slowly grew on me and today this is one of the topics that i am most interested in.

I am currently reading a book about the history of political thought and also following a blog that intends to cover 200 thousand years of history in 40 years, reading a book per month... Let's see how that turns out!

My favorite areas of reading are the history of Rome, the history of England and the french and american revolution. But i am pretty eclectic, so i am interested in a lot of othe stuff (i am also currently reading a book about how humans evolved from apes and what made us be the way we are).

Other areas of interest are science (math, physics), and business books.

I hope to engage in many fruitful conversations with other members of this group, get good tips for enjoyable reading and contribute with my very limited knowledge (every time i finish a book i realize how much i still need to read and learn!)

Cheers...
