Have never read Dracula; too scary for me! Read Wuthering Heights years ago but don't remember much of the storyline. Maybe watching the movie would help :D

Lori (lorimcd) Angus, I tend to get fixated on finishing nooks too. I can put them down now... but I have to admit that I finished the Stark Trilogy and was disappointed. The overall series, for me, wasn't great.

message 2103: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) OK writing from my Kindle and auto spell check got me again. Sorry Angie!

message 2104: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I loved Wuthering Heights. I re-read it as an adult about 1.5 ago. It is a love story told by a third person observer to another person. And it centers on two children who were abused and neglected -- they grow up to be horrible human beings but their love for each other is intense and powerful. That is what I got from that story. :) I loved it. I haven't seen the movie.

LOL Lori -- when I read that post I knew it was a spellcheck issue!

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I am reading The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike, #1) by Robert Galbraith -- and it starts off strong. I love her style of writing.

I finished Taking Him Down by Meg Maguire and I loved it -- loved the sex scenes. Maybe 3.5 stars total -- I am so partial to a latino lead, she got some cultural things wrong -- but I loved it.

LOL Lori! Your post cracked me up.

Ugh...I hate to hear that about the Stark trilogy. I thought the first book was pretty good. This second one just isn't grabbing me. There seems to be no plot in this one.

I hadn't read the book but listened to the audiobook a few months ago. It was a full cast that included Alan Cumming and Tim Curry and was excellent!

message 2109: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments After listening to Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, #1) by Nalini Singh on audio and could barely stand the narrator for some reason which caused me to lose focus and not listen, I've checked the pb from the library. Wow, I missed a lot from the audio version! It's so much better but I still find myself eye-rolling with the attraction thing going on between Elena and Raphael.

I think it's funny how the author was outed as J.K. Rowling writing under a pen name and the book sales skyrocketed overnight.

message 2112: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I feel bad for her. I can see why she wanted to keep it quiet. But yeah. As soon as I knew I wanted to read it NEXT.

DG I am reading. I am only at 3%.

message 2113: by D.G. (last edited Jul 17, 2013 01:05PM) (new)

D.G. I think the idea was brilliant. Wait for the book to get good reviews and then come out! (I'm sure she was planning at some point even if it happened sooner than she expected.)

It's really good. I'm around 25% of the audio. The narrator is great. He does all these different regional English accents and you can hear the difference.

message 2114: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I don't think it was planned as it is a series.

Hmm. Maybe ill switch to the audio.

message 2115: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic @Lisa: Listening to Alan Cumming and Tim Curry just might convince me to listen to Dracula! I'll have to see if our library has the audio.

message 2116: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic @Regina: Your post has convinced me to give Wuthering Heights another read! Or maybe try the audio (although so far I've fallen asleep while listening to a few digital audios!)

message 2117: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic Ok, apologizing for hogging the posts on this thread :D But I just opened my email and I won a copy of The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton through the Goodreads giveaway program! I am SO excited as Kate Morton has become one of my favorite authors. Can't wait for it to arrive!

message 2118: by Lisa (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Finished Secret for a Song by S.K. Falls and it was interesting. I've watched several documentaries on Munchausen-by-proxy syndrome, but have never really paid attention Munchausen syndrome as its own thing. The lead character was pretty unlikable but the story sort of made up for some of my dislike of her. And the guy was adorable.

To Seduce a Sinner was the book that got me hooked on Elizabeth Hoyt. It's rare to find a happy-go-lucky social hero with inner torment paired with an introverted dirty-talking experienced heroine. Loved it! :o) Good luck with Beguile a Beast! :o)

I'm going to try Elizabeth Essex's The Danger of Desire by Elizabeth Essex . The reviews are mediocre, but Essex said her favorite authors are Laura Kinsale and Joanna Bourne so I must try her work. :o)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Brenda Novak is a bit like Karen Rose. She sometimes disturbs me. I'm reading Home to Whiskey Creek atm and the story is making me a little uncomfortable but it's very good.
Started Beautiful Bad Man last night but didn't really get very far.
Will finish up Deadly Games tonight, very good in an A-Team meets Romancing the Stone meets Steam Punk kind of way.

Lisa | 383 comments Just finished reading Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, #1) by Nalini Singh in pb form and I liked it SO much better than the audio. I was able to follow it better and found that I missed a LOT while listening to it. Or rather, not really listening to it. I blame it partly on the narrator but sometimes it can be me and what's going on while trying to listen to an audiobook. And sometimes, it's the world-building - where I absorb more info while reading versus hearing. I must process better visually or something. Weird. Anyway, I really liked Angels' Blood once I got past the eye-rolling beginning. The second half was WAY better and I look forward to continuing the series. But if I hear about Raphael's "sharp blade of a voice" or all the various "blade" themes, I might scream. A little bit.

Guess my next book will be Mr. Perfect by Linda Howard before July is done with.

Congrats, Peggy! I like Kate Morton, too, so you'll have to let me know what you think about The Secret Keeper when you get it.

WENDY & LEEA - KEEP READING SF - MERCENARIES PART 2!!! I can't say whether or not you'll be sorry, but you'll kick yourself if you don't finish, especially if you're close to being done. (view spoiler)

I'm switching gears... was slogged down in an Agatha Raisin mystery (no, not a romance) thinking it would clear my palate after the Unravling series. Unfortunately, the book and mystery seem to GO. ON. FOREVER.

Switching to The Silver Chain (The Unbreakable Trilogy, #1) by Primula Bond by Primula Bond that I got from Netgalley. It's rather Moody and Noir... but it's a contemp erotic romance. So far, I have yet to see the erotic and any real romance other than 1st attraction, but... it's interesting. The language and the way that the author sets the mood almost makes me giggle, though... "His eyes are lowered over his cocktail as if he's a soothsayer examining the entrails of a goat." - I mean, really? Yeah, it's Halloween and all, but this isn't a costume party scene. And the author seems to like spinning such phrases.

Lori (lorimcd) Yep, that's a direct quote - LOL! It's like the author is trying too hard or something.

Lisa | 383 comments "His eyes are lowered over his cocktail as if he's a soothsayer examining the entrails of a goat."... That sounds familiar...like I read it in another book (because I hadn't read THAT book) and somebody was reading some kind of entrails, not necessarily a goat's...hmm... But right, WHY would that author put that in there, if not for a later reference or something? Or why couldn't he had studied his cocktail like he was reading something like tea leaves? Or some beautiful lady's palm? Or reading his horoscope? Oh man, I could go on and on LOL!

Thanks, Lisa & Lori Mc! I think all of Kate Morton's books have been stand alones. Think that The Secret Keeper is her 4th. Called my Mom as she loved The Forgotten Garden (I read her copy) and she's also very excited since now she doesn't have to purchase TSK!

message 2145: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments @Peggy - that's good to know because I have a couple of Morton's books but thought I had to read them in order (so used to series). Now I don't - yay. How fun, to share reading the same books with your mom. Wish my daughter liked to read and then to read the same kind of books as me (small pity party going on here).

After finishing Angels' Blood, I can't get into a contemporary romance mood for Mr. Perfect yet. So I've started book 2 of the Guild Hunters series, Archangel's Kiss (Guild Hunter, #2) by Nalini Singh instead, on my kindle. And on my ipod, started book 3 Zombie Fallout 3 The End (Zombie Fallout, #3) by Mark Tufo . I LOVE this series!! Especially on audio.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Finished Mr. Perfect by Linda Howard and really liked it, which surprised me. Romantic suspense is not normally my preferred genre, but there was a good balance of romance, mystery, danger, and comedy.

New Adult is the college age range. Mostly 18 to 22, imo, although some people will classify as up to age 24 (I stop at 22 because that's when most people leave a 4 year college, and before the term NA came along a lot of adult books had protags around age 23/24, so I still think of that age as adult). Characters do not need to actually be in college. It's strictly an age classification.

New Adult contemporary romance tends to be fairly steamy, not all that different from a mainstream adult contemporary romance.

Other genres in NA are not necessarily as steamy, such as UF, Sci-Fi/Fantasy and the like.

Young Adult is split into two age ranges - Middle Grade and regular Young Adult. Middle Grade is the pre-teen age range up through middle school/jr. high. Content is fairly clean.

Young Adult is pretty much high school age - 14 to 18ish. Content is varied. Some YA books have limited or no sex, violence or swearing, whereas some YA books have lots of swearing, violence and/or sex. Sex is generally not as detailed, but it really depends on the author and publisher. Some YA books actually do have full-on sex scenes with erotic detail. I've also seen graphic violence and rape in YA, but it's not as common for most mainstream books, unless the subject matter is about abuse.
