joanne (cabeswaters) Its hard to say what will happen, hopefully goodreads can continue running indpendently, just with more financial support.

What I don't want to see is goodreads getting rid of the option to find the book at our local bookstore or other sites, just because amazon owns it.
Also the habit amazon has of trying to get more 5 star reviews just to sell more books - I like to be able to express my opinions, thank you

It is sad to see how many companies are now being bought over by google and amazon, but I guess that this does give the sites a much more stable foundation

Another interesting article I came across

Yes, it was an eye opening article!

:D I think we all qualify;)

message 58: by Steve (new)

Steve | 1034 comments I loathe Apple. There is a bunch of vitriol there that isn't relevant to this thread, but yes, I do agree with Brenda and Michael -- I'd much prefer Amazon over Apple.

This is so spot on, um, the rest of the quote that doesn't appear to be here, that says....goodread members are the product that was brought...because that is what has happened. I think Amazon brought the goodwill of goodread members, nothing more or less.

A post from Otis, founder of Goodreads, with an update, and answers to a lot of the questions that have been asked re this merger:

Sharon Robards (sharonrobards) | 944 comments I thought that was really good post.

Steve | 1034 comments Indeed, thanks for link.

It does sound like business as usual. The Goodreads Feedback thread about this deal is still going strong, so Godwin is likely to raise his head any minute now. I am not concerned, it sounds like Otis has fought the good fight, and not much is changing.

I would personally like to hear if there is an influx of Amazon people into Goodreads, but Amazon have always played staffing very close to the chest, so I strongly doubt news like that will make the light of day.

I agree Sharon, I thought it was a good post, with a lot of answers to questions that the multitudes have been querying....

And yes Steve, business as usual:) I'm sure Otis will keep us updated should anything of significance come up.

Interfering with reviews would be a terrible thing here. One of the things I like about Goodreads is that everyone can write a review without fear of it being removed by someone who thinks you might be biased.

message 65: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80208 comments Mod
That's one of the things that Otis covers in the above link, and nothing will be changed, which is good!

A very interesting article with Otis Chandler speaking about Amazon...

message 67: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (shazartist) I have just been reading about this, gosh I must have my head between too much fiction! I missed this fact. One main reason I came into good reads was to get some unbiased reviews on books and avoid 4 and 5 star doggy reviews. I wonder what will happen?

message 68: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80208 comments Mod
Still unbiased Sharon. We have been assured by the CEO of Goodreads that things will remain the same, our reviews are still our own etc. If you go across to the Feedback group you can read more about it, if you wish:)

For those of you who have a kindle, it's been announced by CEO of Goodreads, Otis Chandler:

Goodreads on kindle - it's coming!

I like it, but I already own a paperwhite, I wonder if it will update with this feature

I don't know, hopefully we will know more soon...it would be good if it relates to existing kindles:)

I have never kept my kindle on line as the power gets used up too quickly. Although, I have the goodreads app on my iphone which I really like. I just got a Kindle fire, maybe that will be better with the power consumption, I will try it when goodreads goes Kindle :)

I only turn my internet on when I'm downloading a book, turn it off all the other times...that's what they advised me with mine anyway, and it seems to work well.

message 74: by Sharon (new)

Sharon (shazartist) How would you be able to use good reads then? you need to be on line ? unless I am missing something.

message 75: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

I don't use my kindle with Goodreads, it's an older one:)

You will have to be online to use it. The kindle integration will work similar to the kindle store, I assume

Sharon (shazartist) I thought so Michael, Time will tell if people like the idea I suppose.

Michael (knowledgelost) Michael wrote: "I don't see what the problem is. Reviews should be on the books merits not on your personal opinion of the author. If you don't like the author don't read there books easy."

I think if you read a book and find out that the author's opinion irritates you, then you should be free to express that. But not in an attacking way.

message 83: by Liam || Books 'n Beards (last edited Oct 03, 2013 09:45PM) (new)

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Honestly I don't have any problem with the changes. If you're the sort of person to go on vocal and brutal diatribes about people on the internet, you should probably move to Reddit :P

message 84: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80208 comments Mod
Same! Don't diss the author...they work hard to get the book out there, whether we like **it** or not!

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) This is reminding me a lot of the enormous drama recently over the Ender's Game film - people discovering that the author is against gay marriage and stuff and ranting about how they're going to boycott the film and never read any of his books and so on.

People really need to learn to distinguish between art and the artist. Hitler painted nice pictures.

For those of you who are interested in going over to BookLikes, it seems they might be the ones deleting some of GR members reviews!

message 87: by Brian (new)

Brian | 31 comments I have sent this to GoodReads.
Since Amazon now own GoodReads, please make Amazon AU possible for authors to gift Kindle books for review to readers. It limits the possibility of promoting an authors work through Goodreads, and indeed WORKS AGAINST Australian authors, and is discriminatory.

I wonder if it has occurred to Amazon that they are losing money with this restriction?

message 90: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80208 comments Mod
Probably! You can get around it by sending a gift card to the recipient for them to purchase the book themselves...it's a bit of a pain for you guys, but it works:)

No gift card on Amazon AU that I can see. Goodreads response; they will see.

Have just spent about an hour 'chatting' to an amazon person online about this problem - if I'd known, I wouldn't have migrated my account. Now I can't gift our kids with eBooks, which is how I realised that it was a problem. I can't even see my past orders beyond the beginning of .com.au, although all my books are still there on the list. And I can't migrate my account back.

After a conversation that included: "I see your account was never linked to amazon.com from the beginning..." And me becoming more and more annoyed and receiving no answer except "only amazon.com customers have the gift option" the online chat person attempted to refer me back to the 'contact us' template that had referred me to the online chat in a reply email...

Am currently grabbing my head and going "AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHH!"

message 94: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments A small update - now I've had an email that states "As you're located in United States, we're happy to call you...."

I live in hope that this issue might be resolved if someone at Amazon actually listens to what I'm saying.

Even though they have my address! Which clearly states that it's in Australia. The inner machinations of amazon - tangled, complex and who knows what else!
