B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I had a similar problem with Amazon US; it wouldn't let me buy anything via that site because I lived in AU!

message 102: by Katie (new)

Katie Stewart (katiewstewart) | 184 comments My sister emailed me yesterday. She'd wanted to gift a book to my daughter for her birthday, but couldn't because of the AU restriction. So I had to buy it for her (she's on my account) and my sister will pay me back. It's just another thing where Australia is so far behind everyone else with Amazon.

message 103: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments So annoying isn't it? Had no idea this would happen when I 'did the right thing' and changed to the .au store.

message 104: by Katie (new)

Katie Stewart (katiewstewart) | 184 comments Haha, I just remembered, my sister came to see me today and forgot to pay me back! :D

message 105: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) You know with all the kerfuffle about Goodreads/Amazon, it struck me that we can complain all we like. But the powers that be are going to go ahead and do what they want anyway. So, no use complaining...

Where else would we go? GR is by far the best site, user friendly, lots of discussion sites etc.

I disagree a bit there Bette. If no one complains then nothing is ever going to change. Maybe if enough people complain something might happen:)

message 107: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Well, that is true, here, as in all things.

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments A quick update on transferring Amazon.com.au accounts back to the US. It is now possible! Yay! I can now gift books again. A completely different online chat person explained how after I received a gift card that I couldn't use. Maybe it's a new thing, but I don't really care. I have a useful account again.

So do you actually have both US and AU Leonie?

message 113: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments It appears so Brenda. Quite exciting really :)

Mmm! I might go and see if I can join AU now:) Thanks Leonie!

message 115: by Leonie (new)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 3569 comments I did think I'd only end up with the US account, but after I transferred it back, I could still purchase on the AU one with the one click button. Depends why you want to join the AU one really.

OMG!!! It has definitely changed and very recently!! When I tried to create a new account, they said I already had my email address showing up....I used the same password as with the US site too!!! Thanks Leonie!!

:) Not that it matters which I use as generally the prices are the same anyway:)

message 121: by Veronica ⭐️ (new)

Veronica ⭐️ | 2387 comments I had an Amazon US account and when I put the kindle app on my iPad and tried to purchase a book it said please transfer to your AmazonAu account. I hadn't even made it. It had the same email and password. I just change back and forward between them. I can't purchase ebooks on the Us one

message 122: by Rita (new)

Rita Chapman | 151 comments I was recently told that the formatting on my book Missing in Egypt on Amazon was dreadful. Sure enough, when I checked the formatting had gone! I had to reload it - don't know why it happened. My other book, Winston - A Horse's Tale was fine. Has anyone else had this problem?

I've resisted changing to AU even though Amazon keeps asking and glad I did.

I was notified recently that one of my reviews has been plagiarized - there is apparently a huge amount of it happening across Goodreads, so when I found this thread in the Feedback group, I thought all of our members should be made aware of it. It may or may not affect you all, but at least you can read through all the posts if you want. Goodreads staff and support are onto it as well...

message 126: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Robards (sharonrobards) | 944 comments That is really kind of funny. But why, why, why? For free books? I still don't get it. I just had a quick look at that thread and wonder how they are checking if they are plagiarized?

message 127: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Robards (sharonrobards) | 944 comments Ah, I think I get it, stealing reviews is one thing, but stealing copyright books, then using those copyrighted reviews to steal from authors is a bit of an awful problem. I've noticed a few ebook sites claiming to have my books for free, a few months back, and was going to go back and take a closer look when I lost my computer. Something I must chase up when I have a new pc.

message 131: by Sally906 (last edited Apr 12, 2015 10:52PM) (new)

Sally906 | 90 comments This is worrisome - I searched one of my recent reviews just to see - and it has been ripped off - some lazy reviewer called sally906 on goodreads has copied my review word for word!!!!

Oh - wait a minute that's me!

Phew - the only version it found was my own - so I checked another one - this time two people had done it - that old sally906 on goodreads again and now a blog called books and musings from downunder!!!

Oh wait a minutes - thats me too!!! Double phew!!!

On a serious note - it does happen - I have an alarm on my Wordpress blog if someone tries to steal content electronically.

I did have one of my reviews posted on an e-book site without permission - and it did link back to me but posted a comment asking it to be removed.

The thing is - if I am doing a review for a publisher or author I always ask them if there is anywhere else they want the review posted other than here, my blog and amazon. So why people think it is alright to swipe people's reviews is beyond me.

At least good reads is looking into it though, in the thread that Brenda linked to Goodreads responds:

"...we've definitely confirmed that the sites mentioned in this thread are illegally scraping our content. Our team is going to look into this further. We really, really appreciate you bringing this to our attention..."

MaryG2E (goodreadscommaryg2e) | 934 comments This morning I have discovered that the whole look and layout of my Goodreads account has changed OVERNIGHT! WHY? There's a very old saying, which I believe is relevant here: 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.'

message 133: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) You mean your profile, Mary? Mine seems to be the same as it was.

It is going to change, MaryG2E, but mine hasn't yet. If you are interested (or if anyone else is), you can check it out here (https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...) and leave feedback in the survey, although they did say in one of the posts that they wouldn't be making great changes from the new design that they've floated so I'm not sure how much feedback will be taken on board.

I didn't think they were going to roll it out across the board for a couple more weeks though...

Thanks Kathryn:) I appreciated that link as I hadn't known anything about it. I actually just did their survey with the new set up and really like it. It's much easier to navigate I think, in the short look at it I had.

I think there's good and bad. I'm not that fussed about it, and I couldn't see what is wrong with the current navigation, but I suppose I'll get used to it! The main problem at the moment for me is that when you mouseover the notifications, when the threads are revealed, it doesn't say which are the threads with new messages... So hopefully they'll fix that :-)

message 137: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments And I still don't know how MaryG2E's GR could look different unless she'd clicked on the link in that thread!!! Unless GR has been doing some fiddling which has affected the appearance for some users and not others, because my navigation is still the current/old one unless I've clicked on the link that day!

Mine hadn't changed and now in the last 15 minutes it has - after I did the survey coincidentally enough!

But I like it other than being able to find the Home button, which I commented on in the survey. There doesn't appear to be one, so how do we get to our feeds?

message 139: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Just clicked on the big "goodreads" in the left hand corner and that takes me to the feed!

Kathryn | 3569 comments Brenda wrote: "Just clicked on the big "goodreads" in the left hand corner and that takes me to the feed!"

Yes - apparently that's intuitive with most websites having a clickable logo... It does take a bit of getting used to when you've been happily clicking the "Home" button for years!

message 144: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80210 comments Mod
LOL! It does, but it seems easy - and I love both the Browse button and the Community one! Great ideas IMHO! And the brightness of the numbers over the Notifications/Inbox/Friends Request icons:)

message 145: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Laura wrote: "Not seeing a change yet...I wanna seeee!!"

You've got to click on the link for the survey, Laura...

And actually, you don't need to do the survey, but you do need to click the "Next" button to get to the page where you can click the link to open a new tab with the new navigation. And it seems to last until the next day (something to do with the cookies and how long they last apparently), unless you click on the link in the first post to take you back to the current navigation.

message 146: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80210 comments Mod
Which I did - but then a little while later the whole thing changed to the new stuff:)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Brenda wrote: "LOL! It does, but it seems easy - and I love both the Browse button and the Community one! Great ideas IMHO! And the brightness of the numbers over the Notifications/Inbox/Friends Request icons:)"

Isn't it funny how we're all different - I feel like the whole thing doesn't look brighter, but looks more washed out than the current set-up! And I could take or leave the big drop-down menus when you accidentally move your mouse over "Browse" or "Community"! But like I say, it still works OK and I'll get used to it, I'm sure...

message 148: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80210 comments Mod
Yes we certainly are different! I feel it's crisper and cleaner than it was:)

message 149: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Brenda wrote: "Which I did - but then a little while later the whole thing changed to the new stuff:)"

Oh, I see - I think if you had a current tab/window open it would stay with the current/old setup, because your new navigation setup opens in a new tab/window, but then if you click a link in the tab with the current/old setup, it will open with the new setup. Does that make sense??!
