You definitely can use alternate editions for the tasks and mini's if needed.

For the sake of simplicity it'll just be the first and last initial so Sarah b. Larson would be SL.

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1052 comments Ok, I am very slow here. I think I have most of it down. But I am a little confused on the set of 10 tasks.

So once we have 10 books completed that fit the different tasks, we should create a post. Is that correct? Or if 1 book can cover multiple tasks, the 10 tasks might be completed with less than 10 books. Correct as well?

Also, can I plagiarize a team's spreadsheet, please! I promise to write you up in my will as a way of saying thanks!

message 307: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Plagiarize away my dear :)

The sets of 10 tasks is harder to explain vs doing lol. I'm gonna make up a mock post in a minute and I'll post it here for everyone to see.

Thanks!! I like it a lot better too. Would you consider it a re-telling?

You are rocking this like crazy!

message 309: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Ok example:
For example purposes lets say the task was black on the cover with a mini challenge of 2 people on the cover. Once you've completed 10 books that fit the task group it together something like this:

Task books:
1. Priceless PP 25 (include who read the book too)
2. Cruel Beauty PP 30, FTR 50, TNB 50,
3. Immortal Rider PP 35, AI 50, TNB 50, MCP 20
4. Of Beast and Beauty PP 30, FTR 50, TNB 50,
and so on until you get to 10

At this point include any books that didn't fit the task and summarize them the same i.e.
The Fairest of Them All PP 25, FTR 50
Reached PP 40
White Hot Kiss PP 30, TNB 50, MCP 20

Then total up your totals:

Total PP for this post:
Total FTR for this post:
Total TNB for this post:
Total AI for this post:
Total MCP:
Total For complete task: 100

FYI:
PP stands for page points
FTR stands for fairytale retelling
TNB for team name bonus
AI for author initial
MCP stands for mini challenge points.

message 323: by Joanne (new)

Joanne Do only fairy-tale re-tellings count, like a retelling of Snow white or whatever? What about books that are considered "modern" fairy-tales? I found some books that are tagged fairy tales and I'm not sure they would count. For example:
The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly Seraphina (Seraphina, #1) by Rachel Hartman or Inkheart (Inkworld, #1) by Cornelia Funke

Paris (pah13) | 4285 comments Joanne wrote: "Yuck, have you guys seen how Anne Rice acts on the internet these days? I will never read anything she's written again."

Yeah she's rubbed me wrong too. But then she did that back when she renounced Lestat to write books about Jesus and then when the vampire trend came about again, she dropped Jesus cause he wasn't selling and started writing Lestat books again. It wouldn't have bothered me if she hadn't talked so much crap about Lestat and writing those books and all that.

message 331: by Heather (new)

Heather | 268 comments Jenne, I'm wanting to read Romeo Redeemed (Juliet Immortal, #2) by Stacey Jay . It's shelved under retelling and fantasy. It's a modern day Romeo and Juliet story. Will this count for the FTR?

Include it when you're posting that you've finished on your team's thread. No need to include it on the spreadsheet or the tracking post. If I have any questions about a book, I'll revert to the person's shelf or the team's thread.

I've seen lots of Romeo & Juliet retellings shelved like a fairy tale. To me it's not kinda like Wizard of Oz. Now I just did some research I've already said yes to Robin Hood and after looking it's not a fairy tale (I think the movie might of tripped me). I've already said yes to Robin Hood so it's ok, Alice in Wonderland is ok (wikipedia has it listed as one), Wizard of Oz & Romeo & Juliet are not ok.

Little Mermaid: Little, Wee, Small, Mermaid, Merfolk, Merman
Red Riding Hood: Red, reds, ride, riders, riding, rider, hood, hoods, hooded
Beauty & the Beast: beauty, beautiful, beauties, beast, beasts, beastly
Sleeping Beauty: Sleep, sleeping, sleepy, asleep, beauty, beautiful, beauties

Ok Joanne the first one you listed has the characters from the old school tales. I would take it as a retelling for sure.

The other ones to me or more fantasy than fairy tale. This is kind of a gray area for sure. I'll make the final decision on a retelling based on:
A) Does it have any characters from any fairy tale?
B) Does the blurb make it sound like a retelling?
C) Is it listed on a listopia or been shelved as a retelling? Now they're are mis-shelved books for sure so if by reading it or by reading the blurb you can tell it's bogus then don't count it.

Now it doesn't have to have ALL of those features to be considered a retelling. I've seen some modern day ones that feature the characters in a modern setting like Red and I'm ok with those.

It's that fine line between fantasy, paranormal, and fairy tale when it comes to modern fairytales. Any book that's kind of hazy just ask and I'll look at it and say ya or nay :)

Not sure if this has been answered before - with author initials can you use any team name or does it have to be your own team?

My particular problem with this is that I don't know fairytales. So for example, back to this lovely gem again:

Get Ogre It Erotic Fantasy to Set Your Imagination Free by A. Violet End

It had a series title: Grimm & Dirty Fairytales

It is on the Fairy Tale Retellings Hidden Gems list (I can't wait to see if I agree!)

However, when I read the story descriptions - -I have no idea whether these stories are based on fairytales and which ones.

Does that matter? Is the series title and list enough, or should I be asking for confirmation from someone who actually knows fairytales?

message 346: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) | 7439 comments Susan you're obsessed with that one lol. The name makes me LMAO!

When we have a new challenge like this launched it takes the questions in order to work the kinks out and find any holes.

In order to keep things simplified I'm going to change the ruling on re-tellings, modern tales, etc.

IF IT'S BEEN SHELVED AT LEAST 5 TIMES AS A RE-TELLING OR FAIRY TALE IT'LL COUNT TOWARDS THE FTR BONUS.

IF IT'S ON A FAIRY TALE LISTOPIA I'LL TAKE IT

SO THIS WILL MAKE ROMEO& JULIET AND WIZARD OF OZ COUNT SINCE THEY'VE BEEN SHELVED MULTIPLE TIMES.

And I'm not shouting that just making it visible :)

and...

I understand your message above, but what if it is clearly a re-telling, but not on a list, not been shelved? Still okay? Huntsman's Prey .. only shelved 2 times, not on a list, but the first book in the series was shelved as fairy tale many times, the book blurb mentions Wonderland, Hatter, fairy gm....

Any word on Tarzan?

THanks...and I promise to give you a few hours without any questions from me :)
