I decided not to do the A-Z Character challenges this year. I had a hard enough time doing it when you combined the sexes that I figured dividing them up would just multiply the pain. lol Filling in as you go works for awhile, then you're stuck trying to find characters with a Q name, and most books I don't have a clue what names the characters have until after I read it.

However, I am attempting this year to try to do the A-Z Author Challenge using author last names only, and I'm going to try to do the A-Z Book titles by not allowing titles to start with A, An, and The (ie the book titles must start with the actual letter).

I don't know if "brave" is the right word for me BG. I am actually in a real reading funk and have only read 2 books so far this yearwhich haven't even fitted into the monthly challenge! I'm gonna just see how I go. As you say it can be fun for a while but once your stuck on those hard letters it can be frustrating.

I thought Q character was hard enough when I had to find only one. I can't imagine finding two Q's, Z's, V's, etc. And I didn't want to resort to rereads for books that I know have those characters in them. I think the A-Z book title and author challenges plus every monthly and most quarterly challenges are enough for me. lol I decided not to stress out on those two.

As for the reading funk, I've been in one since my brother died last summer. I don't read the way I used to. I did after a few months start reading fiction again, but I'm still not reading the way I was. If you're really in a funk, I'd say forget about the challenges. Pick out something that either you really want to read wether it fits a challenge or not, or reread an old favorite that you know you'd enjoy again. Reading so-so stuff that doesn't interest you that much just to fill a challenge category won't help get you out of a funk.

Good advice BG. Reading should always be a pleasure. One of my new year's resolutions this year is to stop putting things off (the drama's I've had!!!! because I put things off). So part of this means getting off my butt and actually doing stuff, so this eats into my reading time. Then (this is going to sound nuts), I don't want to read cos I'm afraid I'll get stuck back in the mode of reading being more important than the rest of what's going on (like getting house FAR more organised - it's not hardly at all). So it's a bit weird for me at the mo... but yeah, I'm going to see how I go and try not to stress when I don't fit the categories. =)


And as far as losing your brother, take your time, brothers mean a lot to us sisters. We have a Maori saying here in NZ... kia kaha, arohanui. This means be strong, with much love. =)

I started using novella's to fill some categories since I got to the point I couldn't read 10 full size novels a month anymore. And with Read the Month plus the Monthly challenge, unless you can cross challenge nearly all of it, you'd have to read about 15 books a month. I made my make your own challenge to read 5 books from 10 different categories. I based the categories on the some of my popular shelves on GRs that I havn't managed to read what I wanted to last year because they may not fit regular challenges. Sometimes I've had to get quite creative to get books to fit categories, since I read more than just romance. I found a Phillipine short story online for the geography category this month but I hated reading it. I'm starting a library book I wanted to read Mountain Man: A Novel of Male and Female in the Early American West by Vardis Fisher that the movie "Jeremiah Johnson" starring Robert Redford was based on. Discovered the lone man (Redford) on the white cover was wearing snow shoes, so all the white is snow so it can technically fit the winter cover category. But I'm 2 chapters into it and not liking it so far. (Hoping it gets better.) Yet I feel compelled to keep reading as I don't know what else to read to fit that category. I'm torn between wanting to complete the challenge, and just ditching the book and reading whatever I feel like wether it fits a challenge or not. Having trouble with the Out with the Old category as well, as my oldest TBR books on my unread and TBR shelves are all non-fiction books that will take me longer than a month to read. (They are the kind you read a chapter at a time.) So right now I'm not enjoying what I'm reading and can't even figure out what I feel like reading. :(

Yeah ditto with that, it's kinda like having to decide what for dinner! It's the worst part about cooking, and sometimes the worse part about reading is having to choose.
