Dee Waite (deeannwaite) | 9 comments Welcome all fellow newbies! I've only been a member for a short while, but so far I love the feel of this group. Conversational, not confrontational. :)

Paul, I own a Kindle FireHD and love it. Of course, I'm from the old school and prefer to hold a book in my hands, but as Ty stated, I too travel frequently and having my Kindle with me is a tremendous burden lifted. My luggage is much lighter, and I always have reading material, as well as internet access, just about everywhere I go. I'm able to check my emails, read, search the web, etc. without hauling a laptop around.

Chris, I've been thinking of reading Alastair Mclean. Which book would you suggest to be a good first read?

Happy weekend to you all!

The Way To Dusty Death

Where Eagles Dare

Ice Station Zebra

The Guns of Navarone

Some of my favourites

It's very nice meeting you. I highly recommend you try out the Women's Murder Club, Private, and Michael Bennett series from James Patterson. I'm starting to read Private L.A.
Looking forward reading your thoughts and comments. happy reading! :)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Hello Antonello, you might enjoy Baldacci's Total Control. It is one of his earliest, a stand alone, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It's my fav of the several I have read so far.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments Hi all. I have an old school basic Kindle, you know the one that shows cave paintings where you turn pages with buttons. I mostly read books made of paper (some of you still recall paper right?) Oh, and I love audio books. My daughter got the Kindle for me. She said she was tire of me complaining about books that were only available in E-book form.

LOL

Hi Christine,

I have 10 David Baldacci books, read Zero Hour, reading The Forgotten , read both Will Robie books, waiting for The Target.

Of my ten to read sadly do not have Total Control, will look out for this one.

Dave Edlund (dedlund) | 44 comments Hello all! After reading some of the postings I can tell I'm in the right place. I love thrillers, really the only genre I enjoy reading--Jon Land, Matthew Reilly, Rollins, Cussler, these are but a few of the biggies that immediately pop to mind. But lately I've enjoyed searching for lesser known authors, and many have been referred through groups such as this.

By education and profession (science and engineering), I work in developing alternative-energy technology. I live in Oregon, am a dog person, and love the outdoors. Although I've authored technical books, my first novel Crossing Savagehas just been released. Naturally, it's an action/political thriller.

Hi Dee. If i may butt in.It's been years since i read Alistair Maclean, but 'Ice Station Zebra' is the one i remember most vividly. It's quite claustrophobic as all the action takes place in & around the inhospitable environment of the ice & frigid conditions.

Nothing can beat the beauty of a real book, I'm the first to accept that. The smell, the feel, and there are some great covers out there! But I was getting fed up of the stupidly small fonts that can be found in a lot of paperbacks. I like the convenience the Kindle offers. I have a Kindle touch and the app on my tablet and smartphone and can sync all three! I especially like the onboard dictionary, that's useful. The one thing you don't get with a device though is that satisfaction of turning the page from left to right, and then seeing how much has been read. A percentage is not quite the same, and a lot of ebooks don't have page numbers. Pros and cons with both.

Thanks Janet.
Can you save your place with a Kindle? 'Cut & paste' quotes?
I too prefer reading 'real' books. One thing i find a little annoying with many e-books is the lack of introductions, especially when the intro is written by another prominent author. I found this particularly when comparing the paperback 'Parker' novels ( by Richard Stark) with the e-book. In the paperback version, the quest authors often recommend other authors who have influenced the author. I've been introduced to many excellent writers in this way.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments It saves your place. The old Kindles can (could) cut and paste but they are apparently removing that even from those.

message 281: by Janet , Moderator (new)

Janet | 5302 comments Mod
Yes, it saves my place, and I can sync across all devices. What was annoying was that the Kindle Touch wasn't out for that long before Amazon launched the Paperwhite! Was not impressed. Had I known I would have waited a few more months! The inbuilt light is appealing with the Paperwhite.

Have spent the last 4 months reading mystery/thrillers of authors from other countries, and have really enjoyed them. Here are a few. Give then a try.
Jo Nesbo - If you enjoy Cockroaches and The Snowman, enjoy his other books.

Henig Mankel -The Wallander Series and others
Lars Keplar
Louise Penny -Stilllife is her first in a series.
Read them in order
Ian Rankin
Sven Larsson -The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trilogy.
Have some new authors. Will let you know how they are.

I believe his name is Stieg Larsson. I really like him, Jo Nesbo, Louise Penny, and Ian Rankin of the authors you mentioned. Haven't read Mankel or Keplar.

Sue (coccotoro) | 2087 comments Hi Nancy and Kathy. I also love reading mystery, suspense, crime psychological thrillers, and love the choices you have listed. Especially loved The Hypnotist (Joona Linna, #1) by Lars Kepler , The Nightmare (Joona Linna, #2) by Lars Kepler and The Fire Witness by Lars Kepler

So many great authors out there.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments Stieg Larsson wrote The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and two sequels before he died. As I understand it he meant to write several books about the characters, but didn't live to.

I feel in love with my kindle when I was up late night feeding my kids. I could hold it in one hand and turn the page while they were nursing.

Paul...I know that a lot of titles start the book at the first page of the story. I have had to go to the cover or table of contents to find the same things that are in the actual book. I was just able to "cut & paste" a quote in my kindle today. It saves them all in a Notes & Marks file with the book. I have the older Kindle as well with the keyboard. I read on it as much as a regular book though.

The Tattoo trilogy I enjoyed a lot, though would have benefited from a good edit. A lot of sandwiches, coffee, cigarettes and computer technical jargon!!

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments When our kids were small my wife had to learn to turn the pages on a paperback as she fed them, LOL.

Thanks Lorrea. I use the 'Calibre Library' on my laptop & have started cutting & pasting plot summaries from Wikipedia into each book's metadata. Calibre is such a great e-book library organizer. It's so easy to transfer (so i believe) books from the library onto one's Kindle (or other appropriate viewing device). Reading on my laptop is not ideal, so am looking forward to getting a Kindle. I didn't realise there was more than one model. Will have to carry out a bit of research on them.

Hi Dee,

Glad you're interested in Alastair McLean and sorry for the delay in getting back to you - I've been away for the weekend. McLean's best known books are set during WW2 (The Guns of Navarone, Force 10 from Navarone, Where Eagles Dare) In my opinion they're all worth a read. Others you might try are: When 8 Bells Toll, Ice Station Zebra, The Satan Bug and Puppet on a chain. Hope this helps.

Chris

Hi Kathy and Sue
You were right about his first name. I forgot to include 2 more authors: Adler-Olsen and Minette Walters. Minette is from the UK and several of her books are on dvds. However, they won't play in the US.
Mankel is one of my favorites and so is Louise Penny. Let me know if you read any of the books and if you like them. Will post new authors.
A friend just gave me 2 new books and authors: Outrage by Indriouson Arnaldur and The Hand that Trembles by Ann Eriksson Kjell. You can get them on Amazon real cheap.

Hi Mike
Stieg Larsson died without leaving a will. His 2 brothers inherited everything, and his partner of 15 years got nothing. I can't remember her name, but both she and Stieg were activists; hence the birth of the triology - to show the abuse of women in Sweden. He left a manuscript which his partner has.
