Luke (korrick) I'm at 124 out of 208 (59.6%) with 15 (7.21%) on the to read list. The increase is mainly because there's a lot of tiny works and/or separate editions that didn't show up on my first glance through, as well as the fact that I've already read 'If on a Winter's Night a Traveler'. One of these days I'm going to have to crack open my complete works of Poe and finish off the lot. That'll help with making certain I've actually read all the bits and bobs, as I seem to remember doing.

I want to read his complete tales and stories in English. Many years ago when I "discovered" Poe I read all that was translated into Danish. I hope there are some I havn't read yet. Will you read the play too?

If my edition has it, sure. It's called The Complete Tales and Poems, so whether that includes plays remains to be seen.

I've been working my way through the Complete works for a couple of years. I'm still only at 3 of 5 volumes read.

I know my editions had excerpts from the play in the poetry section but it doesn't have the full text.

Not embarrassing at all, Liza--just lots of good reading ahead for you!

sora Aggiolina | 3 comments I have read 69 books of your list; I am new here and have not uploaded them in my reads yet. I have read most of them many years ago. I like you bookshelves collection. I will read them all except some I don't wish to read like Moby-Dick because I just can't stand the hunting scenes. I had tried to read it some years ago and couldn't. The same happened with the Jack London's White fang. Maybe I will try again in the future.

Yep, I agree! We all started somewhere!

I would have had a similar number if I'd tallied my numbers when I first joined Goodreads.

Hitchhiker ‘s is a fantastic audiobook! Stephen Frye narrates

message 683: by J_BlueFlower (new)

J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 2268 comments I can understand why people cannot read Hitchhikers Guide. It is a strange nerdy humour. If you don't get most of the jokes the story will just be random nonsense.

Catch 22: I gave up after about 50 pages. About the third or fourth time the story has a catch 22-situation. The rest seemed to be just more of the same.

If you look at the group list
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/9...
it should tell you the number (at least on the first page) independent of edition.

Then yes that’s correct! 157

April 2017 - 141/180 = 78%, 39 books unread
April 2018 - 176/217 = 81.1%, 41 books unread.

I haven't done nearly as badly as I was expecting!

I thought I'd be a lot further behind since I haven't been reading much and the group has picked several books by authors I dislike over the last year. But I've just a couple more unread books than last year, and that's just as easily explained by the fact that I haven't read a single one of next month's selections yet.

80% is awesome. I also have a number of books on the list that I do not intend to read--not fond of the authors or subject matter. I need to check my stats, since I have read a few off the list already this year, but I think it would be static since I have also not read with the group reads lately.

message 689: by Melanti (new)

Melanti | 1894 comments Pink wrote: "And you're over that magical 80%, well done!"

Even better, I'm to the point where merely adding on a new month's selections doesn't drop me below 80%, even if I've not yet read a single one! Yay! (It's a completely arbitrary goal post, I admit.)

Sara wrote: "I also have a number of books on the list that I do not intend to read--not fond of the authors or subject matter. ..."

I think I'm up to the point where about half of the books I have left are by authors I dislike, or books I attempted to read and just couldn't get into.

86 out of 217 so far but 10 of them I haven't rated on GR as it was 20 or so years ago that I read them. I plan to reread them and I'm not sure my feelings will be the same as when I was a teenager.

lol. I would like to see that list, Bob. It would be interesting to see if we are all avoiding the same books.

Lori...I do find that I often re-read books from my early life and either loved it then but can't find the spark now or realize how differently I understand it now that I am older.

message 695: by Tammy (new)

Bob...do the Never Ever List. That would be funny.

message 696: by [deleted user] (new)

I must say I'm a bit worried about some of the ones I loved. I reread Little Women/Good Wives and although this was a great favourite when I was young and I read it more than once unfortunately, now I am older I found a bit too preachy and saccharine for my tastes. It has somewhat spoiled the warm memories and good feelings I had about it.

Re-reading childhood favorites has been a risky proposition in my experience. There's been a couple that I've seriously regretted re-reading.

I've had the same experience. Anne of Green Gables was that way for me. I still liked it, but it wasn't what I had remembered and I felt I had destroyed something precious.

Years of reading (maybe, I'm generalizing here) of dedicated thrillers will do that.

Working seven days a week left my eyes too tired for reading.
