Lori (batchelorxyz) | 158 comments I finished reading Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn last night for task 5.2. Five more points gives me a total of 215 points.

I enjoyed reading this book. I found it a little slow in the beginning, but by the end it was really funny. But overall I couldn't give it 4 stars, I would give it 3.5 if I could, maybe even 3.75.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) I wonder if anyone is rushing to finish another book right now so they can secure the top spot.... :)

I'm so curious about the 50-point task!!

message 4253: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments For some reason, I was thinking yesterday was the 15th, so I DO need to be more patient. Sorry Cynthia :) I know that someone different recently took the top spot.
I wonder what the requirement will be to pick a 50 point task (how many books we will have to read, what other things we will have to do to meet this requirement). That is a tough task to pick out because it really has to be challenging to earn 50 points!!

I have only read the first in the Ranger's Apprentice series, but I really liked it. I listened to the first in the Gregor series and it seems a little young to me, but you might like it just fine.

I really like the Daughters of the Moon series by Lynne Ewing. I just read the first Maximum Ride book by James Patterson and liked it. I haven't read them, but my grown up niece likes the Edge Chronicles. Again, I haven't read them, but I know a lot of "girls" that like the Georgia Nicholson series by Louise Rennison. The first one is called Angus Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging.

There are also: The Sisters Grimm by Michael Buckley, Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead, House of Night by P.C. Cast, Children of the Lamp by Philip Kerr, several series by Tamora Pierce...I recommend Alanna, Blue Bloods by Melissa de la Cruz, Fablehaven by Brandon Mull, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares, The Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine...a little bit older teens, and Amelia Atwater-Rhodes shapeshifting series...as well as her vampire books that aren't quite a series...LOL.

Kristen Harvey Hehe. I have no chance to finish anything by noon today. I'm just excited to see what our new task will be. I've only got about 8 left right now.

I'm wondering the same thing--how many MORE books will I have to read... Will they have to be a certain length, will any of the books I've already read be transferable to the 50-point task.

I was thinking that with Holocaust Remembrance Day being April 21st, we might get a task having something to do with that, and for this Challenge, I've read The Diary of Anne Frank and The Book Thief already... But I have NO idea what the task will be, so this kind of planning is not very useful...

message 4257: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments There are a couple of books on my TBR that I am hoping to use for the 50 point task that do not currently fit into the challenge. I am only reading books that will fit into the challenge since there are so many books to read this time around. Last time there were only 3 25 point tasks and this time we have 9! I do love these challenges though :)

message 4258: by Judith (new)

Judith 25 point task #9 - Sara's Task. Read a book that has a title of 12 or more words....

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia

Total points 30

Manday | 212 comments I also have a handful of books I am reading outside the challenge right now that I hope fall into the 50pt task.. cross your fingers!

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments It's is 10:45 AM EST so we have a little more than an hour until the 50 point selector will be official - that person will let me know and I'll let you know as soon as I do.

Plus, there are so many more multiple book tasks this time! Last time, the only one was read a book and its sequel, and now it's multiple books all over the place! There are 45 books vs 34 books from last challenge!

PS - 50 minutes!!
PPS - I hope the top people have already figured out what they want to have as their task, if they win!

Nicole | 155 comments I read Alice's Adventures In Wonderland for 25.4. Though I knew the story, I don't know if I had ever actually read this as a child. It was whimsical with the random capitalization and a fun refresher, but not something I loved.

Total points: 250 (Nicole NC)

message 4266: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I hope they already know too!! Looks like it is going to be Sandy, unless Bridgit finishes something soon. What if it is a 5 pointer, then they would be tied!

I did not actually count the books, but 45!! Wow!

I'm in South Africa, it is 6pm here - what time is it there? How long do I have to wait to know the 50 point task??

message 4271: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments It's official Sandy is the winner I've messaged her and will post as soon as I hear. In the future in the event of a tie for this task the person who has completed the greatest percentage of tasks will win - if it is a tie after that I will have both submit a task and put it to a vote.

message 4272: by Maggie (new)

Maggie (maggie4007) | 116 comments I love putting books in the writing section! It looked like I wasn't going to be able to get my hands on a book from the library for a task, so I wanted some ideas. I looked through like 70 pages!! This is so much easier!

I thought the same thing about yesterday being the 15th- I even paid almost $20 to have something overnighted when I could have paid $4.95 and had it been there in plenty of time had I known what day it really was. Talk about kicking yourself- I could have bought a brand new book with that money!

Kristina
Just finished:

7. DARLA'S TASK - Read a book you've either seen in a movie or heard referenced in a movie - Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen which is referenced in loads of movies, including You've Got Mail.

This was a slow read for me but once I got use to the language it became a great story.

25 points, making my total 300 points.

message 4280: by El (new)

El will any of the books I've already read be transferable to the 50-point task.

I don't know, would that really be fair? I think everyone should have to start fresh on the 50-point task. Since it's worth so many points I don't think it would appropriate to use something that has already been read for this challenge. Of course that's up to Cynthia to decide, but that's my opinion. I like the idea of everyone being on the same playing field with such a high pointer.

Angela, sorry. I didn't even read all the other posts, which I usually do first, and see that others already chimed in. I'd be in a much better mood if I could just go take a walk, but I'm a week out of knee surgery. I think a person can have too much time to read!

El Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "I'd be in a much better mood if I could just go take a walk, but I'm a week out of knee surgery. I think a person can have too much time to read!

I hear that. I had surgery a few years back near my tailbone - I couldn't sit, could only lie down on one side or the other and then needed help turning to the other side, etc. I could only stay in bed and read, which sounds great only in theory, not in execution. I got through the first two books of Proust that way, but the pain medication made it more difficult that it probably is under sober conditions!

I understand your frustration, Elizabeth. It's actually not that fun to read when that is all you're capable of doing.

message 4283: by Heather (new)

Heather El, I agree with you about the 50 pointer being a fresh start for everyone.

I just spent a little over an hour browsing through the local library. It was heaven. I'm usually in and out quickly so today was a bit of a treat for me. In my mind, Heaven will be a library.

message 4284: by El (new)

El WV Heather wrote: "In my mind, Heaven will be a library"

Ditto! Hell is other people and Heaven is a library!
My boyfriend has learned that going to the library with me is not an in-and-out affair, and I am not to be rushed. :) My time spent at the library can literally make or break my entire day, so the happier I am leaving the building, the more improved my mood for the rest of the day.

I have issues with most of these...
5 Point Task 1 - Should be Fictional Fantasy/Sci-Fi

10 Point Task 1 - Irish task - Which edition did you use because some are less than 100 pages and all 10 point or higher tasks must be at least 100 pages - besides that and I've never read it but from what I can tell it's not set in Ireland or written by an Irish author.

10 Point Task 2 - Mexico - Again too short and not sure where Mexico comes in play

10 Point Task 3 - Australia - Not too short but not sure of Australian connection

15 Point Task 2 - Is neither poetry nor about a poet - it is fiction written by a poet which is not what I wanted

25 Point Task 2 - Needs to be Non-Fiction

25 point task 3 - Requires 2 books

25 point task 4 - Not on the big reads list

So I can only give you at this point 65 points

message 4288: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Our community needs a new library. It is housed in the building that was intended to be the museum, but some 30 years ago, some big shot decided the building should be shared. Of course, both city departments have outgrown the present accomodations. But can you believe there are people in town who think we don't need a new library? It's bursting at the seams! How can there be people who don't understand what a library does for a community!

Is it an issue of funds, or do they just not want to find more space?
Either way, that sort of mentality is baffling to me that a library would be considered unimportant and somehow less deserving of space or funds.

We wouldn't be able to use a book that's already been used for this challenge would we? That wouldn't make any sense. I think she meant to use a book that was read since March but not used for any tasks, like everyone has been able to do with the rest of the tasks. Or did I misunderstand?

Hmm, good question. Not sure which of us misunderstood - but I still feel that for 50 points we should have to read something fresh. Otherwise it somehow feels unsportsmanlike. :)

That is certainly what I meant!!

Joy Marie Completed #1 under the 5 point catagory! YIPEE!!!!
Didn't realize "Coraline" was a middle school level read when I saw some other people had it on their list. It just sounded like an interesting book. I almost didn't check it out when I found out where it was filed in the library. Then I figured, "why not," and it turns out it was worth it. Very cute, but morbid book!
Also changed "The Alchemist" from 15.8 to 15.6. Doesn't change my points but I just wanted to let you guys know.

Either way, that sort of mentality is baffling to me that a library would be considered unimportant and somehow less deserving of space or funds. "

It's both space and funding. It isn't clear to me what the city manager and mayor want to do instead, but they seem to keep moving the goal posts, so to speak. Everyone is onboard one day, then a proposal for the decided upon property comes in that makes sense, so they say they can't use it for the library. Another property gets decided upon, then something else happens. In the meantime, like with everything else, the cost goes up with the passage of time.

Haha....I hate it when a simple sentence is so hard to understand sometimes on line. (I was trying to help someone yesterday because they incorrectly listed a book to the system and they got upset with me!) I do know what you mean though- I can definitely see your point. I think Cynthia will have to tell everyone what she wants to do- since we've been doing that with other books and this one is worth so much more and coming in late and all. It'll be interesting to see how it's going to be done- I can't wait to see what it is!
I know I wouldn't want the job of coming up with it! LOL A 25 ptr. maybe but not the 50 ptr.- way too much attention on it!

That's what I thought- it's so darn easy to get misunderstood or to misunderstand something on-line. As much time as I spend on-line, I'll never get used to that!

No, I meant move one of the books we'd already read for the challenge over to the 50-point task. If people don't think that's fair, that's fine. I'll be the first to admit that my ideas aren't always the best. Plus, I've been very insomniatic lately; I feel like a zombie. ... And zombies aren't exactly known for their good ideas... ;)

BUT, when I was thinking that, I had this Holocaust-Awareness-Day idea stuck in my mind, and, since I didn't want to read ANOTHER Holocaust book (they're very sad, and kind of depressing me!), and had another Aussie book I wanted to read, I thought it would be QUITE convenient to switch The Book Thief to the 50 pt task, and read another Aussie book. But it was just wishful thinking, as I don't even know what the 50 point task is going to be.

SO, just ignore that idea. Sara was just having a crazy moment.
