OFFICIAL SPRING CHALLENGE - 2009

im reading that one at the moment too!

There are more little things like that wrong than you know. I come across them a lot and like you said, sometimes whatever is wrong is very clearly shown on the cover. But any librarian can fix pretty much anything with a listing- I think the main thing it takes a super librarian to do is to delete certain listings if they have over a certain number of reviews. Most of the time they're combined anyway- I wouldn't ever delete a book that people have rated and reviewed.
But if anyone sees anything that needs fixing we can fix it- I know there are more librarians than me and Becky!

kudos to the librarians!

5 POINTS
1. Read a Science Fiction OR Fantasy Novel.
If someone had ever told me I'd be reading- much less enjoying- a 'zombie' book I would have laughed my a*@ off. I'm still in shock. A girlfriend of mine recommended this when I told her about this task because we have some different reading tastes and I liked this book SO MUCH! I could have easily read it in one sitting had I not been so darn busy.
I'll be the first to admit I know NOTHING about this type of book but I was totally into it. I can't believe how realistic Frater wrote this book- especially the feelings and situations going on between survivors. This is a trilogy and I had only planned on reading this one, the first one (unless of course the next challenge called for something like this!) and there's no way I can stop now. I'll have to read the second and hope that the third comes out soon.

Yup, that's exactly how you do it- you have to scan it. I don't know anything about scanners though but I also hate looking at a listing with no cover.
Let me go look at exactly how to do it (unless Becky wants to ring in here soon!) and I'll message you with what we have to do....

Just so you know, you can make these kinds of requests in the Goodrea..."
This is true- anyone can message me as well. Thanks Becky- my scanner is still in it's box so I would have had to do some digging since I don't know much about it. I'm more into the minor editing and combining and seperating editions.

Total Points: 250

I read it aloud to my daughter over several nights and it was great fun..."
I did like the way it was written. I kept trying to emphasize those words and give them that extra meaning.

4. The Inimitable Jeeves 3/..."
I highly recommend House of the Spirits. Isabel Allende is one of my favorites--especially her ealier books.

If you can find a cover picture somewhere on the internet (yay for google image search!), you don't have to scan the picture in.

Oh, Sara, if you could the copy of 1984 I'm reading doesn't have page numbers on GR, is it possible to put the correct number of pages. It has 245 pages. Is that in your librarian powers??
Here is the edition:
July 1950 (first published 1949) by New Amer Library (Mm)
bindingPaperback
isbn0451521234 (isbn13: 9780451521231)

If you can find a cover picture somewhere on the internet (..."I'm a librarian as well and fixed it for you.
SuzieR wrote: "Cynthia, as I live in England, and have visited Florida in the US twice, both times in May, can I read a book set in the US or is that taking too broadly?! (just trying my luck here! :))"That's a little to broad - it doesn't have to take place in the same city you visited but it should take place in the same state if you use the US.
Donna Jo wrote: " Cynthia, Could you please recheck my total points sometime? You have so many of us to keep tabs on, I'm amazed you get all these tally boards up so quickly. But I am showing a difference on my sp..." - The issue is with your rhyming task - I think you are trying to rhyme the 10 from 10,000 with glen which doesn't work - if it was spelled out in the title like ten thousand then yes I would count it but since it's in numerical form that doesn't count. It's because it's worth 15 that I'm being kinda strict with it - if it was only a 5 pointer I probably would let it slide.

Okay. I can work to fix that. I just didn't know it was a problem. Thank you for your help.

lol, thought you might say that! No problem, I'll find something else .... I've also been to Cornwall in April and think Notes from an Exhibition is set there, so will maybe use that ....

I really liked the book, but I always like Utopia/Distopia books, so that was no surprise. I was also surprised by Aldous Huxley, he is clearly more a philosopher than a writer. In addition to the interviews my copy of the book included a letter he wrote to Orson Wells about 1984 in the back, which was enlightening. Huxley sees the world he depicts in Brave New World as a real possibility, the direction Humanity is headed. I find that hard to believe. The book also curtailed nicely with my recent read Geography of Bliss, which asks "Is happiness the highest good?"
New Point Total: 90

That brings me to 55 points, I think.

SuzieR, If you are interested in light, funny mystery novels, you could use almost anything by Carl Hiaasen; most of his works are set in Florida.

Read this page Librarian Manual and then click on "Apply" under 'How to become a librarian'.
I'm not sure if the criteria has changed (there were some discussions out there about that) but I believe the only requirement is to have 50 books on your shelves.

Last I saw, that was the only requirement, but I would also say that to be a librarian, you should have a desire to make the information on goodreads more accurate and complete. Maybe that's a given. *shrugs*
Anyway, to say at least SOMETHING on topic, I'm currently reading a few books:
Tasks-in-Progress
5 Point Tasks
7. Audiobook: Artemis Fowl 6: The Time Paradox by Eoin Colfer
10 Point Tasks
3. Australian: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
15 Point Tasks
5. Winner of Newbery 1983: Tell Me If the Lovers Are Losers by Cynthia Voigt
7. Rhyming Titles:
25 Point Tasks
6. 400+ page, NonFic British Monarchy: The Life of Elizabeth I by Alison Weir

But I did finish listening to Anne of Green Gables for the 25.4 task.
That makes my total 125 points. :)

Jack and the Beanstalk
Alice in Wonderland
Kidnapped
20 000 Leagues Under the Sea
Wizard of Oz
A Child's Garden of Verses
Mysterious Island by Jules Verne
The Yearling
The Secret Garden
Aladdin
The Ship That Saild to Mars by William M. Timlin
The 39 Steps by John Buchan
The Tale of Two Cities
The Red Headed League
The Hound of the Baskervilles
Silver Blaze
The Scandal of Bohemia
The Valley of Fear
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
someone really likes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, previous six titles by him
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Frankenstein
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
The Shining
Exorcist
Salem's Lot
Moby Dick
Treasure Island
Gulliver's Travels
Mother Goose
Atlas Shrugged
Arabian Nights
Also mentioned was The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. A book with the title The Other was on the shelf, but I can't find it on Goodreads. As well as The Haunting, which is probably just a shortened title of The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

If you can find a cover picture somewhere on the internet (yay for googl..."
You are so right about the OCD!! I haven't done much more than simple editing and I didn't know this about pulling the image off the internet. I'm going to fool around a little with it so I can learn more about it now- thanks.
That is technically the only criteria on who can be a librarian- the over 50 books. They had too many people applying, becoming librarians, and then leaving the site. It was useless to accept them. But, like someone else said, the desire to make the listings systematic and correct should be within every librarian- that's the biggest thing!

"
Thanks Liz! I will definitely check him out!

I really really am. I'm listening to the audiobook, which is terrific! I took a day trip on Saturday and spent about 6 hours in the car... And I STILL have 3 discs left. I hate getting out of my car now! (Not enough to stop me from driving really really fast wherever I'm going, but still....)

It's a cute little movie with McCauley Culkin and Christopher Lloyd. Also voices by Patrick Stewart and Whoopie Goldberg. It's partially animated--hence the "voices". Here is a synopsis I found:
"This is the story of a young boy named Richard Tyler, who finds shelter from a storm inside a nearby library. Tyler slips and is knocked unconscious while exploring a rotunda in the library. Upon awakening he is led on a journey through conflicts and events that resemble fictional stories, keeping him from finding the exit from the library."
I would also add that he's a big scaredy cat who overcomes his fears as he travels through stories in many famous books (a lot of the ones listed above).
Not the best movie in the world, but it gives kids some exposure to classic novels where they might not get any today.

I'll use:
So Dear to Wicked Men by Takis & Judy Iakovou Read 3/30
The Woman from the Glen by Chloe Gartner Read 3/24

Have you read I Am The Messenger by Zusak? I thought that one was good, but in a different way. It was a little bit quirky, was more "hip", if that makes sense, and not everyone liked the ending, but I think it is worth reading as well.

I hadn't seen it in a long time and I really enjoyed it. The list was to aid in Darla's task, 25.7.
In looking up the books it made me realize that I have never read Kidnapped and that is the one I am going to use for that task.

Joy - I saw that you drove to and from the Texas Valley, so I looked at your profile to see where you were driving FROM, and your profile says Bryan. I live in Bryan, too! Which leads me to the question: Are you the one who keeps checking out all the good books from the library??? ;)
If you ever want to come to a real life book club, let me know--we're meeting on April 14th to discuss Of Mice and Men. The place is still TBA. (We usually meet at 8:00pm at a restaurant and order dinner or dessert.) I think for May 12th we're reading The Last Lecture. We take turns picking books, so you never know what will be next, except for this month, apparently....

I also read The Book Thief for this challenge and absolutely loved it. I finished it last week, and my husband walked in the room as I was finishing the last page and bawling my eyes out. He asked me why I was getting so worked up over a book, and the only thing I could think of was that it's more like an experience than just a book. I'm glad you ladies are liking it as well! I've been telling everyone I know about it.
