Anna Filling in 1980 with Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping. 4 stars. Maybe 4.5. I love the language, her use of words. Definitely character driven. But haunting. If you're looking for action and adventure, this is not the book for you. But if you want to get lost in the descriptions? That's where this author rocks it. 21 of 35.

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Completed my selection for 1985 - Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. Wow! Arguably one of the best books I have read all year - I can't believe I waited this long to read it! I, wrongly, assumed it was a complicated, scientific science fiction work and that was why it had such a cultish following. I'm glad to say I was wrong - the book has incredible heart and simply lays out the ethical quandary to save the world should we sacrifice one amazing child. Not sacrifice in a physical sense, this book is not as bloody, though is equally chilling, as Hunger Games. Definitely worth reading and I cannot wait to see the movie! 5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Completed my selection for 2005 - The Silver Boat by Luanne Rice. This book left me conflicted. I did not feel that the author was capable of fully expressing the narrative or her characters as she could have. However, the story was heartfelt and the characters had depth. Overall, not bad but not one of my favorites. 3 stars

Anna Filling in the year 2000 with Ursula LeGuin's The Telling. I tend to have mixed feelings about LeGuin's work. On the one hand, her worlds are wonderfully complex and her writing pristine. I find something of a fascination in reading. But, at the same time, I always have this sensation of distance between myself and the characters and this limits my enjoyment. I had the same issue with this book but still thought this was one of the more enjoyable pieces of her work that I have read. 3 stars.

Anna Playing copy-cat to Megan with my 1985 selection. And I recommend everyone do the same if you've still got 1985 as an open slot for reading.

Year 1985. Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game. This has been recommended to me before and I've wanted to read it in advance of the movie...so I finally did it. And it is really a very cool story! Entertaining, disturbing, an MC you can't help but feel for...yeah. 4 stars.

I had a little bit of trouble reconciling the character's age with the maturity of the narrative no matter the explanation...but it's well well worth the read. So don't let that stop you.

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just completed my selection for 1990 - Brida by Paolo Coelho. While I enjoyed this interesting look at the history of magic and witchcraft and the deeper philosophical meanings, it was not one of my favorite Coelho books. It didn't speak to me as much as some of his other works. 3.5 stars

Zara's Retreat | 2365 comments Hello everybody. I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself.

My name is Zara and I've agreed to take over the leadership of this challenge now that Ashley has had to leave that role. I look forward to going through all the great books that you have already read or are going to read.

A bit about me (for those who don't already know): I live in Western Australia with my husband of 22 years and our two delightful children, and for the next 10 days, a gorgeous Italian boy who feels more like he's one of the family than someone from across the other side of the world!! I'm also addicted to books and often borrow more books from the library than I can realistically read in a 3 week time period. lol

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments I finished 2 books today, so I've edited post 262 to show I've finished 3 of the 15 I've chosen.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments I just edited message 262 to add a finish date of 9/20/13 for Lolita, published in 1955. That gives me 5 of 15 for this challenge.

SibylM (sibyldiane) | 223 comments Unless I've forgotten something, I don't think I've signed up for this challenge. Better late than never, right? I am going to read from 1996 forward. I chose 1996 as it is the year I quit my job and moved across the country to go to grad school. Also because I am too old, too lazy, and too unappreciative of non-current writing to start with my birth year (1965).
So,it looks like I've got four left to do:
1996 -
1997 -
1998 -
1999 - Our Babies, Ourselves: How Biology and Culture Shape the Way We Parent
2000 - Biological Exuberance: Animal Homosexuality and Natural Diversity

2003 - Boy Meets Boy

2005 - The Walking Dead, Vol. 4: The Heart's Desire
2006 - Strange Piece of Paradise
2007 - Fellow Travelers
2008 - The Bishop's Daughter: A Memoir
2009 - Sprout
2010 - The Swerve: How the World Became Modern
2011 - Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco, and Destiny
2012 - Far from the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity

The characters were complex and the narrative was interesting, once I figured out the author's style. However, the beginning was incredibly slow and confusing, and I felt that the male characters were treated rather flippantly. Glad I read it and would recommend to anyone wanting a challenging read. 3.5 stars

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Completed my selection for 1983 - Bluebeard's Egg by Margaret Atwood. While Atwood's typical style was present in each of the stories, I didn't connect with any of the characters or storylines. Because they were short stories, it was harder to really appreciate Atwood's point. Not worth reading. 2.5 stars

Anna 25/35. Don't know if I'll finish but I'm still stroking.

Filling in 1982 with John Saul's The God Project. 4 stars. It's a quick read but utterly engrossing, pins and needles, all that. Very creepy, disturbing...and surprisingly still relevant considering it was written and published in 1982. I enjoyed it very much despite the unsettled feeling the story left me with.

Anna Filling in 1983 with John Gardner's On Becoming a Novelist. 3 stars. I admit the whole "how to be a writer" book is a guilty pleasure of mine. I read a lot of them. I thought this was a good one but not especially earth-shattering. Admittedly, it may have suffered for the fact I've read so many. Lol!
