message 216: by Anna (new)

Anna Honest answer? I don't really recommend it...I found the story a bit dull. Some of the writing is really cool; I liked the style but the story itself? Rather dark and again...a bit dull. Just my personal opinion though. :-)

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Finished my selection for 1986 - The Autobiography of Henry VIII: With Notes by His Fool, Will Somers by Margaret George. This book is well-written and planned. The notes by his fool are necessary editorial notes that help to enlighten and authenticate the "autobiography". It's so well-done that it could really have been written by Henry. Definitely worth reading! 4 stars

Cheryl | 23 comments Just finished 4 of 12.  Did not like Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle (1963) at all.  I understand that it's social satire, but how does it have a 4.12 GR rating? And what makes it "one of the twentieth century's most important works?" That's what the blurb on the back cover of the 2010 trade paperback says. Really?? I can so think of about a billion more important works of the 20th century! Just sayin... To each his own, I guess.

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Just finished my selection for 1989 - The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. Really well-done and while long, the story kept me engaged throughout the majority of the book. Took me about 10% to really get into the story and there was a bit of repetition at the end, but overall, really well done. 4.5 stars and definitely worth reading!

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Selection for 1994 - Mariana by Susanna Kearsley. 3.5 stars. Good fantasy with bits of history thrown in. My only issue was that I felt as if neither the modern or the historical bit was developed fully and the ending just came very suddenly. Worth reading and I look forward to reading another of this author's books.

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Completed my selection for 2013 - Ladies' Night by Mary Kay Andrews. Really well written and entertaining! This book reminds me of some of Andrews' earlier work - fun, light-hearted, and with a good message. I especially loved that it was set in Sarasota, and as a Tampa native, reveled in the local landmarks and the Rays' baseball. Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars

Anna Filling in the year 1994 with Jennifer Egan's The Invisible Circus. 3 stars. The author has a compelling narrative voice but the story didn't quite keep up imho. Still, enjoyable. I liked her later book The Keep much better.

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Completed my selection for 2001 - Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris. Surprisingly entertaining, to the point where I broke my own rule and listened to the audiobook driving back and forth to work and at the house, rather than just while I walked the dog. The narrator was really good too. I thought the vampire sex scenes were a bit more graphic than necessary, but other than that, thoroughly enjoyed the book! Definitely worth reading! 4 stars

Anna Filling in 1984 (and book 19 of 35) with Shapechangers by Jennifer Roberson. I'd have to give it 2.5 stars...entertaining enough I suppose and a quick read...but the quality of the narration was sub-par with stilted dialogue, forced plot-leaps and an MC that came off as shallow. Have to give it an eh.

Anna Filling in 1999 (completing 20 of 35) with Every Dead Thing by John Connolly. A definitive 4 stars from me. And I think it was his first book? Wow. I'm really starting to become a fan of Connolly's work. It's a suspense/mystery with some fantastical overtones. A little gruesome in places but well-written and engaging.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments I just joined the group this past weekend, plus I would have to read 63 books if I started with the year of my birth. So...how about I read books published for the birth years of my parents, husband, myself, and 9 siblings? Since my parents were born in the same year, that will make 12. I've put the list on a shelf in My Books and will update here in the next few days.
