A Northern Light, which someone else already recommended is my favorite YA historical fiction, but the other books you mention (Outlander, A Great and Terrible Beauty) have paranormal elements too, so I think you might enjoy Changeling. It was a delicious pageturner for me. :)

This is a historical romance, with great characterization of India in the 1850s. The Duke of Shadows opens right before the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The two leads--Julian, heir to a dukedom, a quarter Indian, and mostly ousted by both societies and Emma, a recent arrival to the subcontinent, not quite willing to languish the rest of her days as a memsahib--are both heavily affected by the events that take place. The second half of the book takes place in Britain.

While the majority of this book takes place in Britain, a lot of Japanese culture in in the 1800s is involved, along with a bit of Hawaiian. Great read!

I really enjoyed this book. I went into this book blind and I feel like that is the best way to truly appreciate the beauty of it. All you need to know is that it is set during WWII in Russia.
