Blue Sky White Stars
by
"Sarvinder Naberhaus has written an ode to the American Flag. It seems she has also written her autobiography. Kadir Nelson has created a series of magnificent paintings to support her ode. This book is very positive and patriotic. In the words of Kadir Nelson, in his commentary at the end of the book, "...as we continue to push forward, our strength lies in our willingness to embrace our differences." This resonates throughout the illustrations of this inspiring book. "

Tony
by
"A story within a story...Erin and Phil Stead came across a lovely poem in a street newspaper in Nashville, TN about an old workhorse, his driver, and the horse's avid admirer, written by the late Ed Galing. Granted permission to use this lovely poem for a children's book, Erin illustrated the story with genuine tenderness as a true horse lover could do best. Tony will warm the heart and put a little dance in your step! This is a classic in the making. "

Big Machines: The Story of Virginia Lee Burton – A Picture Book About the Imagination of a Beloved Author-Illustrator for Children (Ages 4-7)

"Very well done! This is a unique way to present a biography to younger children. It would be a great book to share along with Virginia Burton's children's books. This story is a great presentation of her life and the illustrations seems to dance across the page, as though in 3-D. The author's note at the back of the book provides more interesting information and photographs about Viriginia Burton. Muddy: The Story of Blues Legend Muddy Waters
by
"A good book? It's a great book! Muddy Water is the story of a little boy who followed his passion, a love of music, to becoming a legend in the blues (#17 on Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Artists). Michael Mahin's language in this story is rich and flavorful! As a tot, Muddy loved the "fish-fry music" of the Mississippi Delta. As a young man, he set out with this a burning passion in his heart and a guitar for the big city of Chicago to share the blues with others. And that he did, but it was a long hard struggle! Evan Turk's illustrations shine like neon lights on the pages of this book. There is a real warmth in Muddy Waters that will inspire and encourage readers to seek more about the history of the blues! Silent Days, Silent Dreams
by
"This is a tribute to James Castle. He was born premature on a farm in 1899 in Idaho. The odds of a happy life were against him as he was deaf, mute, autistic, and perhaps dyslexic. He never learned to speak, read, write, or use sign language. But art gave him true happiness and in his later years, he was recognized and honored for his art. It is an amazing story but a rather sad one. Reading it with a child will bring worthwhile discussions for both adult and child. "
