"I got this purely because of its rating on GR. The name and cover are generic to the max. I was very lucky I went off of rating this time as the book was amazing."

The Amber Spyglass (His Dark Materials, #3)
by
"A universe away from The Golden Compass - the grand finale of the Dark Materials trilogy and wow.. this was REALLY epic. Like Marriage of Heaven and Hell, Paradise Lost style (which it was heavily inspired by). I can't say it ended poorly and while I never look endings to epic things as the promises leading up are always sweeter.. I felt ok ending this one, and a tear came to my eyes at more than one point."

Among Others
by
"This was Hugo-worthy in my book. I think a BIG part of this book, as you are in one character's head the entire time - is that you have to be able to relate. I can in many ways, and that connection propelled the story over the ... questionable.. ending."

Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1)
by
"A culty post-apoc book I had to read. There are some parts in here that are forever memorable. It's all a lie plots are my weakness, it is true. Only real con was that content read a little too YA to fully embrace the grittiness possible here."

Fragile Things: Short Fictions and Wonders

"Hard to break some Challenge rules with this book - I was very impressed, and more Gaiman is always better. I found the earlier stories to actually be weaker overall, and some later entries really brought this one up."

The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard, #1)
by
"A dark, gritty fantasy in an urban, medieval-london style setting. Didn't take enough chances in my opinion but the plot had a lot of twists, turns and deceptions that befit the setting very well."

The Princess Bride
by
"I normally avoid classics like this one, but it got so many positive reviews I had to read it. Working under the shadow of the movie the entire time, it did well - and showed an underlying style and humour that the movie only partially captured. I was glad to get something, however small, from the book."

Leviathan Wakes (The Expanse, #1)
by
"A good example of loving everything but the writer. Every character sounded more or less the same, but the plot/style was much to my liking. I love attempts to portray an alien far more advanced than us that functions on a very different level metaphysically. It was done really well in this book."

The Lathe of Heaven

"It started really strong - dark and taut - Ursula writes like no other. I found the book fell off a bit, but then keeping up the promise that the first 50 pages presented was nearly impossible. Ambitious."

The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress

"Heinlein was clearly brilliant. He was a part of his era though, unlike Zelazny - and I could never shake that. Even characters aside - the story just packed too many details, it made me feel nauseous at times."

The Magic Toyshop

"Short, simple darkly fun romp. I really adored Carter's writing style. She can write a gothic + dark YA style book really well. It was too short though - but I can't complain too much more than that."

The Sparrow (The Sparrow, #1)

"Expecting a shoe-in 5 star book - religion, contact on alien planet, multiple timelines - yes! It missed the mark for me however. A bit dry in every way, she didn't dare far enough with religion - even if the aliens were pretty interesting."

Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1)

"The only true modern YA novel I read - an interesting excursion. A little too light - the world a little too generic for fantasy fare - outside of this, the book was very solid, and the heroine was as awesome as she was hyped up to be."
