While technically a muse instead of an author, Norbert the dog's human informed he passed away last night
Jerry Butler, soul singer (The Impressions and solo) and Chicago government activist, has died. I've added his memoir, named for his solo hit, Only the Strong Survive: Memoirs of a Soul Survivor. And, from Atlanta, the former Atlanta Constitution columnist Ron Hudspeth, a contemporary of Lewis Grizzard wrote columns, interrupted by first a firing from the newspaper, then the end of his own free print Hudspeth Report.
Clint J. Hill has died. He was the Secret Service Agent who jumped on the presidential limo right after JFK was shot. Wrote several books as he assisted with security on five presidents.
Author Alex Wheatle, MBE aka the Brixton Bard has passed away. He wrote both adult and YA fiction, and was the inspiration for one of Steve McQueen's Small Axe films.
Oh, yikes! Thanks for pointing that out. Sometimes Google will throw old articles at me in the news section.
British YA author Aidan Chambers has passed away at 90.And with that, I'm at 100 votes! I'll add additional authors here so other people can add them to the list if they have room.
Photographer of the world Sebastião Salgado has died. Find his work; it is so wide, deep, and humane.Sacha Jenkins, journalist, died.
Comics lost artist Tod Smith on same day as writer Peter David.
And, may we continue to remember those who have died, in service on their return from service, this Memorial Day.
CraftyChara wrote: "Marvel Comics writer Peter David at 68"Love his writing, and though I knew he had fought illnesses hard, it still seems abrupt. His dialogue; his columns "But I Digress" in print and collected; his activism for CBLDF; his characters, and his character. Rest in Peace.
Writer Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o has died. I read his 'Weep Not, Child" for a class, and must keep reading him.
CraftyChara wrote: "Marvel Comics writer Peter David at 68"Did not know this. Sad to hear it. He had a "bit" in his fantasy novel Sir Apropos of Nothing that I can never remember without laughing.
Rainbowheart wrote: "Australian author Kerry Greenwood has passed away at 70."I am so sorry to see this:
Kerry died last week after suffering ill health for a number of years. The tributes are beginning to flow in from across the world from her many fans and followers. She has left us a great legacy in the form of her many books and our memories of the author herself.
Popular Canadian author Andrew Pyper passed away in January 2025 at the age of 56. His last short story, William was written under the pseudonym, Mason Coile.
Frederick Forsyth, Sly Stone, Jan Terlouw, Marthe Cohn, Sarah Kramer, Betty Krawczyk, Barry Fantoni, Michael Allaby, Elaine L. Jack, David R. Slavitt, Barry B. Longyear, Gordon J. Wenham, and Hassouna Mosbahi are additional recent losses.
That is a fine list, Rainbowheart, of notables. I believe I still want to read Frederick Forsyth.I echo the loss of Sly Stone and Brian Wilson mere days apart.
Walter Brueggemann died June 5. He taught at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia.
Peter Appignanesi has died. He was one of the prime movers in bringing the comics form to educational matter such as Freud for Beginners in the Beginners Books series, after translating Marx for Beginners by Rius. There is a fine obituary of his long life on the Guardian website, from the UK.
Kim Woodburn of How Clean Is Your House fame and celebrity chef Anne Burrell have passed away in the past 48 hours.
Bill Moyers, Jane Lazarre, Fanny Howe, Jane Stanton Hitchcock, Charles Chadwick, John Robbins, David Gergen, and Earl B. Pilgrim are additional recent losses.
