In April 2003 the BBC's Big Read began the search for the nation's best-loved novel, the nation to nominated their favourite books.

The BBC believes most people will have read only 6 of the 100 books here, while Goodreads data suggest more than 7. How many have you read?

message 1: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Now this is a list! Much better than that crazy "best books of all time" list on here that has Twilight and the Book of Mormon in the top 5. Those are the best book of all time???? Seriously??? I am glad more rational minds created this list.

message 2: by Rosalie (new)

Rosalie Sambuco I have read only 17 of the 100 books. Not a very good percentage; but I have read so many other books that I would have on my list of 100 favorites. I would like to add Skeletons at the Feast,Whistling In the Dark, An Inconvenient Wife by Megan Chance , Azincourt by Bernard Cornwell , The Archer's Tale (The Grail Quest, #1) by Bernard Cornwell , Vagabond (The Grail Quest, #2) by Bernard Cornwell , The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd . This would just begin my list. I have read and highly recommend all of the books.

message 3: by Penny (new)

Penny I have read 31 of this books (they count series and trilogies as 1, if not it will be more), I'm currently reading 2 (Les Mis & Chocolate factory), and have 19 others on my TBR list, I agree that this is a more sensible list than other "best" and "worst" lists, but seriously the DaVinci Code!!! that is a horrible, over hype, predictable and boring book.

message 4: by J_BlueFlower (last edited Jul 03, 2011 02:25AM) (new)

J_BlueFlower 20 book already read. Looks like a good list to me.

However, is it surposed to be the BBC list? The BBC list does not have the Harry Potter box set but the three first books and no William Shakespeare: The Complete Works

message 5: by Lisa (new)

Lisa James WTF is a bible of ANY kind doing on a list like this one? I guess you could count it as a collection of stories, because when it comes right down to brass tacks, that's all the bible is anyway, regardless of what "version" it is.

message 6: by Ninja Neko (new)

Ninja Neko I noticed this list doesn't match the original one (Harry Potter series was not completed back in 2003, I can't find Germinal on the original list either)
Is there a reason why it's different?

message 7: by Kristjan (new)

Kristjan Wager It is of course nonsense that BBC thinks that people have only read 6 books on the list - it's a list of popular books. Why would they think that?

That myth has been going around in different permutations for a while now.

message 8: by Dls (new)

Dls Hm. I read 53. And there are others that I read bits of. Not sure what that says about me...except I guess that I am an eclectic reader!

message 9: by Christina (new)

Christina As of today, it looks like the list matches the actual BBC one.

Being a reader submitted list of favorites, it looks like a great place to start, especially for someone who hated assigned reading in school and wants to go back to all those books I didn't read in school.

message 10: by Yona (new)

Yona Racheva I've read 15, I need to speed up my reading a bit. But I want to add more books. There are so many good classics not in the list.

message 11: by Lucy (new)

Lucy I've read 42, but I'm not surprised the average is only 6 books for most people.

message 12: by Lenka (new)

Lenka I have read 16, but so many of those books are on my to-read list.

message 13: by BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) (last edited May 13, 2016 10:26PM) (new)

BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) 36 out of 100 (and another 17 on my TBR list). Not bad, if I may say so myself... ;-)

message 14: by sleeping panda (new)

sleeping panda 23 read and counting. really good list. Hooray for the BBC

message 15: by Sandra (new)

Sandra You have the wrong Black Beauty on the list. Should be the one by Anna Sewell

message 16: by BookLovingLady (deceased Jan. 25, 2023...) (last edited May 13, 2016 10:30PM) (new)

I agree and it has been rectified now.

message 17: by Leilani (new)

Leilani I've only read 19. I have had chronic fatigue syndrome for 25 years and try to read as much as possible, but it's difficult for me. I am now 45 years old. This list is great.

message 18: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Lisa wrote: "WTF is a bible of ANY kind doing on a list like this one? I guess you could count it as a collection of stories, because when it comes right down to brass tacks, that's all the bible is anyway, reg..."

There is no bible on the list unless you count The Poisonwood Bible!

message 19: by Rachel (new)

Rachel I’ve read 40 and quite a few on my TBR list
