88432 Yay! The February Mini is out - it looks like it could be fun! Thank you Andy for posting the link.

Ashley and I will have a spreadsheet tab for the mini added to the tracking sheet for people to claim slots soon. In the meantime, if you're reading a book or planning on reading a book that will fit one of the slots, feel free to comment in this thread to "claim" that slot. We'll have a column in the spreadsheet to list what other categories in the mini it might fit, if we need to shuffle things around, so try to remember if your book might fit other categories as you're reading it too.

My book Ruthless Vows will work for black writing on the cover, but I'm pretty sure one of the characters was just drinking whiskey and they were walking through an apple orchard at one point too.

Trio - no worries if you forget to put things on your UNO shelf! I will continue to remind you!!! (Hopefully in an un-annoyingly way). I'm guessing we all will do it at least a couple of times before the challenge is over.

Andy - I looked at your book and thought it was blue! But then I put the cover through tin eye and it said that the area I thought was blue was really half blue and half green. So I don't think it is going to work, but we'll see what Ashley says - and hope that I'm wrong again....

Yay! the mini is out!!! This is the most fun time of the month, in my opinion. I love figuring out which books on my TBR are going to rise to the top to be read soon...

88432 Hi All! I'm checking in.

This past week was kind of busy at work and I didn't get in as much reading as usual, but I have the next week off. I did finish Geekerella, another YA rom com, which I enjoyed but not as much as See You Yesterday.

I started Ruthless Vows and plan to read that as well as Where the Forest Meets the Stars
and The Bodyguard this upcoming week.

I'm guessing the mini challenge criteria will come out soon, so I may hold off on finishing any of these books until then in hopes that they'll work for something related to that.

How are you all doing?

88432 Andy - I would call that cover green and tineye agrees with me, but let's see if Ashley agrees too...
Feb 07, 2024 06:59PM

88432 I finished Weyward today, so one of my colored cover books is done! I thought it was okay - I don't seem to have liked it as much as most people have.

Next up is Ruthless Vows. And I will also read Where the Forest Meets the Stars soon.

I've read Dark Matter and enjoyed it, but haven't gotten to Recursion yet...maybe I'll get to read it for a colored card in March or April....

88432 I see it now - thanks again! You're verified.
Feb 05, 2024 07:41AM

88432 Thank you Trio!
Feb 05, 2024 05:37AM

88432 I finished my first book for the month! It was See You Yesterday. I was a cute YA rom com and I enjoyed it. Now I'm really going to read Weyward next!

Thank you Cris and Trio for adding the dates in - those books have been verified!

Trio I have one more for you though. The spreadsheet has a read date by Winter Oranges, which I can't find on your UNO list or your read list. But I do see Are You There Moriarty, so I'm wondering if the read date just got put on the wrong line in the spreadsheet and the Moriarty book is the one you've finished?

88432 I don't think I've read any Rosamunde Pilcher before, but she is one of my mother's favorite authors. I've also heard her novel The Shell Seekers is excellent (it has been on my TBR for a while) and the one you read has an even better rating on Goodreads! I'm going to need to try her soon....

I need one thing from you Cris, for our records. When I look at your UNO shelf the start date is blank - can you fill that in? Thank you!
Feb 04, 2024 09:22AM

88432 I apologize Megan - I thought I saw a "read date" for that book for you on the spreadsheet, but now I see it was Trio's book.
Feb 04, 2024 01:55AM

88432 Megan - same question for you on The Vegetarian - you don't have a finish date for the book on your UNO shelf and the start date is just Feb 2024 - can you fill in the finish date and make the start date Feb 1 2024? Thank you!

Edit - I figured out another way to look at it and see that your start date is Feb 1st. So I just need the end date added. I think it is a Goodreads-ism that I couldn't see the exact start day the original way I looked at it.
Feb 04, 2024 12:06AM

88432 I have my first verification question for you Trio! For your book Settling the Score, it says on your UNO shelf that you started reading it January 30th. If this is true, we can't count it for the challenge, but if you didn't actually start until Feb 1st, can you update your start time? Your end time only says Feb 2024 - can you make it say Feb 1, 2024? assuming that is accurate? Thank you!

Edit - I figured out another way to look at it and see that your end date is Feb 1st. So I just need the start date fixed.

88432 Oh my gosh Trio - I had the same issue! All I could see was the colored card section and maybe one line of the spreadsheet below and I kept getting an error message telling me to adjust my screen size. It took me a minute to figure out I needed to press [CTRL][-] to make the font smaller and [CTRL][+] to get bigger again! So if anyone else is having this issue - try pressing those keys together to see everything --- or use a desktop if you have access to one --- my work computer is much easier for using the UNO spreadsheet, than my home laptop with my old eyes...

But to answer your question, you can start populating the bottom part of the spreadsheet with books once you know you are going to read them with as much info as you have then. Then as you're reading, update with any more info you learn and put in your finish date. If you end up DNF'ing a book, just erase that line from the spreadsheet.

If you're having trouble with the spreadsheet and it is easier you can post a completion post here with the following information - name/author of book (with link to book if possible), what categories it fits, and your finish date. I'll then transfer the info to the spreadsheet.

I will be looking at everyone's books and making sure you remember to put them on your UNO shelf, making sure start and end dates fall within the correct time period, the book has enough pages, etc. And Ashley will be puzzling all the books into our hands on the official team spreadsheet after they're verified. I'll speak up here if I need you to clarify something about a book and Ashley will let us know if there's a particular card we need more of, especially near the end. You can also snoop on the official spreadsheet to see which numbers we need more of if you're debating between a couple of books.

Hopefully this all makes sense! Let me know if it just raised more questions. ;)

88432 I think that sounds like fun Andy! I'll join you in posting here when I complete a book.
Feb 01, 2024 05:15AM

88432 My first book will be Weyward, due to the fact that it is due back at the library today - I'm so glad my library got rid of overdue fees after COVID! But I probably won't start it until tomorrow - I have a couple hundred pages left in Iron Flame, which is also due back at the library today...
Feb 01, 2024 02:33AM

88432 That sounds like a good start to the year - I think (although I don't love travel so I can understand if it was stressful besides being fun). But now we can read (and relax)! UNO has started!!!
Jan 31, 2024 11:22PM

88432 But don't start reading quite yet - there's still over an hour until UNO starts! :)

88432 I haven't read anything by Sarah Addison Allen - which one is your favorite?

Maybe it's magical realism you like? I also liked June Farrow, but liked Spells for Forgetting even more.

88432 The Mistborn trilogy was my first Sanderson and an excellent place to start, in my opinion! It has been my favorite from what I've read by him. I also really enjoyed Tress of the Emerald Sea and it has a green cover - so maybe it will work for a colored card next month...

I haven't read any of his Stormlight Archive, but I feel like I've only heard positive reviews and hope to get to The Way of Kings this year, but each of the books in this series are 1000 pages long. I didn't care for The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook for Surviving Medieval England as much as most people (it was my least favorite of his that I've read) but I don't always appreciate that type of humor. Warbreaker I enjoyed, but Mistborn was better. There are still several I haven't read, so there may be other really good ones out there....but I recommend starting with Mistborn. :)
