88432 Checking in!

I am reading both A Day of Fallen Night and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow right now; I have 300+ pages left in both of them. My plan is to finish them both on the 15th so I can return them to the library before I leave on my vacation and so they count for the mini challenge.

I'm not sure if I'll read The Violin Conspiracy during or after my vacation, but I am still planning on finishing it by the end of the month.

I anticipate the mini challenge will come out before I leave town; hopefully I can find one more book I can get on my kindle that I can bring with me that will meet one of those prompts.

88432 I found The 22 Murders of Madison May. I think it will work for Yellow 9. It appears to be set in New York City per the description (although the characters travel to various dimensions...I'm hoping alternative realities of NYC). I'll try to read it this week to make sure it will work; in the meantime I claimed this card on the spreadsheet.

88432 I'll take a WD4 for The Swimmers (repeat of Blue 6).

88432 I read a quick novella last night, so I could get it back to the library. I don't know that we need it for this month, but just in case I put it on the spreadsheet. Comfort Me with Apples

88432 To me, the last two would work for brown/bright green.
Mar 25, 2023 08:22PM

88432 I see Melt a Frozen Heart on the mini already - under Artic Hare.
Mar 25, 2023 02:28PM

88432 I'll take gold cover and read The Golden Enclaves (The Scholomance, #3) by Naomi Novik . I can finish that in addition to Geiger for the month of March.

I'll also sign up for The Violin Conspiracy for a colored card for April to start....

88432 Why don't you check and see still...I haven't counted, but it seems like we have more colored cards this month than previous months so we might need it yet! Possibilities are good. I've also found
Instant Karma by Marissa Meyer as a possibility for Blue 5. I feel like 5's are hard to fill. So if this is felt to be blue, I'm interested in reading it and should be able to get it from the library. I only want to claim two colored cards to start, but am definitely willing to do more as we see how everything plays out.

Now is probably a good time to mention that I will be traveling internationally for a week in April (15th-23rd). My best friend and I are going to Iceland to celebrate our 50th birthdays this year! I'm guessing I will be out of touch for that week and that my reading may be down for this time as well. But I'll do my best to make up for it before and after I leave.

88432 I'm guessing the book I suggested before isn't going to work as it is too questionable. But I also have
The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb and
The Girl with All the Gifts (The Girl with All the Gifts, #1) by M.R. Carey checked out from the library.

The Violin Conspiracy could work for Red 0 (stand alone) or Red 2 (Title starts with The).
The Girl with All the Gifts could work for Yellow 2 (Title starts with The) or Yellow 3 (CFN= Helen)
Mar 24, 2023 06:16AM

88432 Okay, I'm curious to hear what they said! But if it's at all questionable, I'll find a different color card to claim.
Mar 24, 2023 06:05AM

88432 Does this qualify for a blue cover? It looks kind of blue-green online to me, but in person I only see light blue/turquoise.

Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone (Ernest Cunningham, #1) by Benjamin Stevenson

If it works, I can take Blue 6 (ALN Stevenson).

I don't mind!

88432 I just finished Unlikely Animals - it was quite good! I'll start Heat Wave later today.

88432 I think England is from Europe. It’s not Asia, Africa, etc. so it would have to be Europe?

88432 Ashley wrote: "Alright Team! I'm currently reading Vanilla Bean Vampire and it's about people in the town disappearing, I think it has to do with the pies (I'm only like 8pgs in, so I'm not totall..."

So many books with disappearing! So I used "hiding from prey" for Violet disappearing in Acts of Violet, but I could move it to "playing dead" if you think either of those work for the people disappearing in your book...

Interestingly, Unlikely Animals also has a character that disappears. Her disappearance is thought to be related to the opioid crisis, which is a major theme in this book. I currently have it in the location category (for North America; it takes place in New Hampshire) on the mini spreadsheet, but I'm wondering if it would work for the Anoles who have venom? Although the description said the Anoles venom is harmless and opioids clearly are not harmless...but I thought it was worth asking as finding a book set in North America is much easier to fill if we can move Unlikely Animals elsewhere.

I expect I'll finish Unlikely Animals this week and then will read Heat Wave. I expect I'll have time for at least one more book, maybe two by the end of the month. My thoughts for those are either The Violin Conspiracy which would get us our colored Red card and which I think has a reddish brown cover, so would work for the mini for that category or Geiger for the patterned cover category in the mini. If anyone else has a book they want to read for those categories, just say, and I'll find something else that will work!

88432 I just finished Acts of Violet. It was okay, I liked the author's previous book Oona Out of Order much better.

But as far as the mini-challenge I'll put it down for the flower spider...I think her disappearance could be analogous to the spider hiding from its prey like you originally suggested Ashley. There's also a character who loves to garden so it could work for that reason too.

I think it could also work for the golden tortoise beetle with her disappearance being analogous to playing dead if we need to switch things around.
Mar 14, 2023 05:34AM

88432 I started Legends & Lattes today. I think it will work for Chrysso Spiders as there are various cultures/skin colors: orcs (green), succubus (pink), fey, dwarves, etc.
Mar 12, 2023 12:18PM

88432 I'm not sure what happens to Violet in Acts of Violet yet, either. But I figure she's got to make an appearance or that we figure out where she went or what's the purpose of telling the story? I'll probably finish it the first day the mini begins, though, so it should be easy to find a space for it.

I think Heat Wave will work for chameleons too - as characters go from normal people to superheroes by changing their look! I'll put that one on the challenge.

Those two will be my next two books. Then I'll read Unlikely Animals for my UNO card - I haven't figured out where that will fit in the mini challenge yet, but when I do I'll claim a line there.

Then if no one has picked the one where we need a pattern for a color, I'll plan on reading Geiger.

I also have Legends & Lattes that I'll need to try to squeeze in somehow as it is due back at the library by the end of the month...
Mar 12, 2023 03:57AM

88432 Now I'm wondering if the color of the book will need to be solid, like our UNO cards, so maybe my suggestion of HeatWave above won't work...

But my other suggestion, that I could possibly take, is for the book I started yesterday. Acts of Violet. The Golden Tortoise Beetle plays dead when disturbed...in this book Violet is a magician and disappears for 10 years...which is kind of like playing dead?

And another book I have checked out from the library is Geiger by Gustaf Skördeman . It has a pattern on the background of the cover, so could be used for the color of the cephalopods?

I work nights, so it's almost my bedtime! I look forward to finding out what everyone else thinks of the challenge when I wake up tonight!

88432 The March mini-challenge looks fun!

I have Heat Wave (The Extraordinaries, #3) by T.J. Klune - do you think it would work for the color category for Peron's Tree Frog? "they vary in shades of grey and brown, where their lightest is almost white; the frog has mottled yellow and black thighs..."
