88432 I've asked in the captain's group regarding Megan's book and have one response so far, that is favorable:

"I think it's sinister because of the map on her face and the backstory of the picture. Like, you know something's not quite right here."

So I think we can go for it. If there are further unfavorable responses and it is voted down, I'll let you know.

I'm reading this for a red cover. Can it count as a sinister color too?"

I'm not sure if it will work for one of these tasks:

11. Read a book with a colour cover (over 50%) that has a sinister or sinful association
12. Read a book with a colour cover (over 50%) that has a sinister or sinful association (must be a different colour from 11.)

It definitely meets the 50% red requirement (which can be sinister as it is the color of blood), but I'm not sure if I'd describe that cover as sinister, which is what I think is required (vs. the color being sinister). Ashley - do you think this works for task #12?

No worries Cris; I swapped them out for you. Feel free to switch again (or delete) if there's something else you want to read.

88432 update on villain synonyms; our leaders reconsidered what can be used as a synonym for villain and determined that assassin is okay. They specifically told us anything on this page is okay:

I think that might fall under "type" of villain instead of synonym...kind of like assassin. Killer might be too specific too...hopefully the book will refer to them as a criminal or felon or something similar that is more generic...

88432 I've never heard of it before either - in the captain's group they mentioned that the Goblet of Fire from that book in the Harry Potter series is an example, but I've read that book so long ago I don't remember exactly how it fit in and therefore how it meets the definition. That's a tricky prompt to me....

88432 I've made a "help" post for the April Mini. It has some ideas for tasks and/or links to lists of books that MIGHT work for the task (these lists were made by other Goodreads users and are a great place to start, but make sure you think the book actually fits the list/task before using). Also note, unless noted for a specific task, you are not limited to books on these lists.

Tasks #1-5:
Synonyms for villain: criminal, law breaker, outlaw, felon, convict, transgressor, bandit, scoundrel, gangster, miscreant, assassin , offender, rapscallion, perpetrator

In the captain's group someone asked if assassin could be a synonym for villain (I had already made this list, so obviously I thought it could....), but our leaders came back and said it was more of a "profession" or "type" of villain and not a synonym. If there's anything else on this list that you don't think fits, please speak up so we can avoid it. And the list (and the next one) was made by just me, so there's probably many more options out there.

Tasks #6-10:
Synonyms for wicked: sinful, immoral, corrupt, unrighteous, evil, vicious, vile, unlawful

88432 The April Mini has been released!

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I've double checked our timer on the dashboard and it is correct - ~4.5 days until it starts. Consider saving any book you're reading now to finish after the timer runs out as we have 55 slots to fill and some look tricky! The mini spreadsheet is available, so feel free to start claiming.

88432 Cris - Just in case you're looking for it, I moved your yellow covered book to Yellow 3, so I could use mine in the Yellow 0 slot.

I know! So good....I do think Fredrik Backman warned you...I wish I could read that whole series again for the first time.

88432 It looks like we moved up to 8th place (from 18th at the end of last month) - way to go team!

88432 Trio - can you add a start date for Are You There Moriarty? Thanks!
Mar 30, 2024 08:43PM

88432 I've finished my last books for March:
We Are All the Same in the Dark - I liked her other book that I read earlier in the month much better, but this one was still good. It was a domestic (slow moving) thriller of sorts that went in a direction I wasn't expecting.

Lion: A Long Way Home - I generally don't like memoirs, but maybe I need to amend that to not liking celebrity memoirs. This one I enjoyed, and it told a bit of an amazing yet heartbreaking story.

Heartsong - I've generally like TJ Klune, although this one fell a bit flat for me. I enjoyed the first two in this series better. I'll still read the last one, though.

Happy Easter!

I think we'd better ask in the Captain's group. Do you mind doing that?"

I've gotten one response to the question so far (I'm not sure if more will come), but it was determined to be Garza as that's how Goodreads sorts it.

88432 Trio wrote: "hi - do you know if this author's last name starts with a G or a V?
Jonny Garza Villa
thanks :)"

This one is tricky! I remember from past years we use the last name that your library files it under. When I look this author up on my library phone app he has four entries (for three books) and half have him under Garza and half have him under Villa.

For Canto Contigo his physical book is under Villa, but the audiobook and the eBook is under Garza!

Ashley is this a question for the captain's group or do you have a better answer?

When I look at it, it's in that unknown range that doesn't work for either blue or green (but would work for turquoise or teal if we get that category in the mini again). Let's see what Ashley says though!

88432 Wonderful Megan!

For the WD4 card we need to repeat one of our colored cards, but we can only repeat each once.

I remembered that Ashley gave us a list of all our colored cards for March back in post #236 and verified that all the blue colored cards have been repeated, so none of those are eligible for the WD4 card.

But any of these would work:
Yellow 3, Yellow 4, Yellow Skip
Green 0, Green 1, Green 4, Green Skip
Red 8, Red Skip

88432 Cris - I think we could use First Lie Wins for this month if you can finish it. Hopefully I have the correct book with that title?

I see that on line 27 - Magic and Macaroons will work for a 5 card (series #5) and your book can work for the 8 card it is currently occupying (ALN Elston). So Ashley will be able to switch things around.

If this is the right book and you can finish it by the end of the month, please put the info for it below the red line and Ashley will move things around.

This would also mean that all we have to claim yet is the WD4 card!
