7638 I really, really love this idea. TKH discussion was great fun for me, and I'd love to try replicate that again.

I adore this group! Welcome Back Stephanie, it's soooo good to have you around again.

7638 @Marly - YAY! So glad you're loving it. I got the blue screen of death on our HP desktop this afternoon - probably time to take everything I want and copy it to the external hard drive. I think that one will be toast soon. I don't think I'll buy another Windows based machine.

We're germy here again - Gabe has some virus, and was running a temp of 101.8 when he came home from an overnight with my in-laws. I had to shake my head at my mother-in-law, Cheryl this morning. She called me and said in this just shocked voice,

"WHAT happened to him?!? He was fine on Thursday!"

my response, "He caught a virus, Cheryl."

"But he seemed fine. He just wasn't hungry at the restaurant and wanted water though. I thought he was tired and then he did take a nap."

"Yes Cheryl. Gabe doesn't nap when he's healthy. Most 8 year old boys don't. That was a sign."

Oh, it's just funny! She's technically my husband's step-mother, and she got Mike when he was 12, so she doesn't have some of the basic child-rearing background that most grandmothers have.

So, another missed Sunday School lesson tomorrow. I feel so bad having them miss all the time, but this winter has been the worst I can remember for kids catching stuff! Both Gabe & Kasia napped today, he's still running a temp, and with all this napping I keep checking her for a temp too.

I've been figuring out summer schedule stuff for the kids, and trying to balance the art camp with the science camp with the baseball and the swimming....whee! My mother-in-law said to schedule them like I would if I were home and they'd run them. It looks like most of the camps are in June, and I am thinking our trip to Arizona may not happen in June at this point. I kind of hate to sign them up for something only to have them miss 5 days of it. Of course, going to AZ in July is NOT going to be fun either. *Sigh. Will figure out something.

After completing the entire Black Dagger Brotherhood series (Thanks Liz Vegas!) I have gotten back to my other stack from the library. I finished Mermaids in the Basement by Michael Lee West for the first surprise challenge (My husband's name is Michael, author is Michael Lee West) and have started Someone Knows My Name by Lawrence Hill which I can already tell is going to be really, really good. I have good intentions of picking War & Peace back up as well...especially now that the group read for Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy is coming up and I want to be in on that one.

7638 Thanks for posting the article! It was very interesting to read.

I'm figuring out my children's summer schedules too...there are a couple of camps the school district sponsors that I think the kids will enjoy. We're doing baseball and t-ball again for their summer sport, and of course swimming. Amazing all the things the kids have to do now. I had swimming lessons in the summer and that was about it!

7638 I've been thinking about that this week too. My daughter turns 6 on April 2nd. 5 years ago today I was in Dallas for my friend's wedding, and I'd had to wean Kasia before we left and then I came home from the trip and had to hospitalize her for a bad case of croup...and all this I remember sooooo vividly - but my big girl was just a baby, drowning in purple fabric because the gown they had for her was too big, sucking on her paci, with big, sad blue eyes. *sigh. Mama's memories a clear, how can those days be 5 years ago???? Children speed up time. I'm convinced of it.

7638 I feel for your brother. :( My freshman year of college our town was flooded, and school was cancelled after April 12. It was devastating for me to have to be kicked home for the summer so unexpectedly. I am sure what your brother feels is far beyond my disappointment back then. I'm sure that it will be nice to have him stateside though.

7638 Good luck Stephanie! Cutting for Stone is amazing...I hope you enjoy it.

I'm about to start Someone Knows My Name which was a recommendation generated by my ranking Cutting for Stone as my favorite read of the year. I know I've heard good things about it from this group, and I need to get through my stack from the library!

7638 I just finished Mermaids in the Basement and really enjoyed it. I've read a few books by Michael Lee West, but I think this is my favorite of hers so far. 4 stars.

7638 Thank you sooooooooooo much for posting Gajinmama!!!! It's good to hear from you. The American press loves a good story, and then they seem to like to juice up their stories even more...lovely to hear from you and what you're experiencing! You are in my thoughts.

7638 Tara - that's an awful lot going on. :( Take care of yourself!

7638 @Lisa - I agree. I'd rather read on my Kindle than a paper book now.
Mar 13, 2011 06:25PM

7638 A Time to Kill is my favorite of his too - I think I stopped at Rainmaker though. I haven't read anything by him in years.

7638 I've finally finished all the currently published books from JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I finished Lover Avenged and Lover Mine this week. I really enjoyed the last two a great deal. However, I'm anxious to get back to some other books, however I had to finish these as they became a compulsion!

I've still got Beautiful Darkness going and so far am disappointed. I really was sucked in to Beautiful Creatures and was expecting a similar reaction to Beautiful Darkness. Nope. Not yet, anyway and I'm close to 1/2 through. I'll dive back in tonight and see if the 2nd half can pull it out of the disappointment category for me.

7638 We were the opposite - we argued FOREVER on our son's name. (first child) He eventually became Gabriel Kjelland - Gabe was due at Christmas, my husband (Michael) is also an angel's name, and Kjelland is my mom's maiden name.

Kasia Carol Beth was named before I think Mike and I were even engaged. :) Kasia was originally to be spelled Kaja, the Norwegian version, but my mother convinced me to go phonetic. Which still doesn't work as her name gets butchered all the time anyway. (It's Asia. With a K. K-Asia) Carol was my husband's mom's name, she died when he was 9 and it's my own Grandmother's name. Beth is Mike's favorite aunt and his Godmother and she's become one of my best friends. :) So....

(and see Jenny's thread become renamed "Baby Name Stories")

I love the personal etymology of names. It's fascinating to me.

7638 Yay on baby girls! And Jenny, I think this has been one of the longest winters EVER!!!!!!!!! Even my son said "Come ON!" in the most irritated 8 year old voice ever when he saw it was snowing again. My sick leave is next to nothing after all the kids' germs and then my own. I'm SICK of winter!!!!!!!!!! And so is my family's immune system. :(

7638 I'm ready to nominate my kiddos for Children of the Year after this weekend. WHAT wonderful kids I'm blessed with! They've been such sweeties, kind to one another, helped me clean the house yesterday and are now outside shovelling since I'm still required to be within running distance of the bathroom. Mike's been working all weekend, and will hopefully be home in a couple of hours, and now because of the kids's hard work he can rest when he gets home. SOOOOOOO proud of them! :)

7638 Phury has too many issues. He's a downer when I'm looking just for entertainment value. :)

And more power to you on Joyce Carol Oats - the only book of hers I've read is We Were the Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oates and that was enough to make me avoid her in the future.

7638 Good for you, Petra! I haven't given up on War and Peace but dove head-long in the the candy reads of The Black Dagger Brotherhood. And I have a stack from the library...I am terrible at hoarding library books sometimes! However, I didn't max out my library card as one of my friends did - and our library card maxes out at 100, so that was a task!

7638 Kasia is better. Gabe threw up in the night, but feels fine now. I feel like I got hit by a truck.
:( Amazing to me how they bounce back and when I catch something I feel terrible. They are playing with each other and watching way too much tv while I try and get stuff done between trips to the bathroom and back to my bed. Not my favorite weekend this year.
