But, best news about the baby! So wonderful that all looks good on that front!

So far I've read:

Today I had conferences and they went soooooooooo well for both of my kiddos! I'm very proud. Gabe's behavior went up in every category, it's apparent he's working very hard in school to do what's right. He's excelling in math and is a very, very good reader, reading and decoding 2 - 4 grades above his age, so I'm very proud.
Kasia, my dear sweet girl is in fact doing VERY well in school and at reading. She's reading at "E" right now, which is great! Our school district wants the students to be at C by the end of Kindergarten, so she's exceeded that. I'm very, very pleased. Evidently the skills I'm seeing at home are just fine. I'll have a much, much easier time relaxing now that I know for a fact she IS excelling. So proud! They have also started doing standardized testing for Kindergarners this year, which seems difficult, but Kasia's math scores were crazy high. It was so exciting for me. After I went to their conferences, I picked them up at daycare and went back to the school for the Book Fair, and the kids each chose 2 books, and I bought a book for each of their classrooms. GREAT day! :)

I'm looking at a library trip this afternoon, run to the grocery store and grab something special for supper tonight - I think I'll do steak and lobster for our pre-Valentine meal, and plan to make meatballs and mashed potatoes and gravy tomorrow for supper. :) We don't have reservations anywhere, and after a dozen years of marriage I've concluded it's oftentimes much more enjoyable to have a special evening at home. I've got to throw together supper for my in-laws too - my father-in-law had surgery on Friday and is home, and he's the primary cook in the household. So, I shall earn my daughter-in-law star and get them taken care of.
But first, I'm going to go play American Girls with my daughter. :) Bella and Julie want to have a tea party.

I think that Ruth May is missing from this conversation...she was the ultimate demonstration of the adapatability of small children coupled with their fundamental fragility. I think too the fact that she hid her malaria pills and got away with it for so long describes the level to which Orleanna was distracted...and by what? I understand that the life in Africa was difficult and overwhelming...but when you have children whose lives depend on their quinine pills, as a mother I would make sure that my baby swallowed them.
And the observation that a mother saves her children from the bottom up did resonate - almost painfully with me. I have two, but it's amazing how much that baby "needs" me, and how focused I can become on making sure she's fine. I rely on my older child (by a whopping 2 years and 4 months) to be more self-sufficient.

I don't mind sexual content either, but the rape is very graphic and very brutal - both hers and her punishment of Bjurman, and I think the visual would bother anyone, (but, for those of us who have read the books, we know it's coming and it IS supposed to be awful) and it is FOR SURE a movie you want the kids either out of the house or sound asleep before starting.

I was just reading an article in our local paper how a rural elementary school is using Nooks and iPods to get kids reading - LOVE IT!

Last night Mike and I watched The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. Of the movies, the 2nd one was the best by far. I was pleased with all three though. It'll be interesting to see the US version - the Swedish adaptation was fairly faithful, though there were some subplots that were (fairly understandably) axed. I found the book a much more satisfying conclusion to the series than the third movie, but my husband who hasn't and won't be reading the books has been recommending the movies to people. It's funny how he's perfectly willing to "read" a 2 hour and 40 minute movie. He HAS been picking up books more lately though, so that's fun for me. I should pick up one from the series he's reading just to discuss with him. I know that he'd be pleased.
We're fighting winter germs in my house - and losing, for the most part. Gabe was home sick last week Wednesday, Kasia was running a temp this week Thursday and again today. I'm coughing...whee! I have a ton of dishes and the kitchen to clean today, but other than that I think I'm going to curl up with a book and do not much of anything. Gabe has a new Lego project to work on and I'll see what I can get my Kasia girl interested in. I may end up playing some Sorry or something.
Tomorrow is Super Bowl and we're supposed to go to a party at a friend's house...we'll see how that turns out.
