439228 I agree with you. The horrors of the broken society don't feel too over the top and I can see how it would make people more open to her new religion.

439228 I wanted to like this one more than I did. I just felt the story was flat. I am curious to see the show though.

439228 I just finished this book. It has been on my TBR for quite a while after I read and loved Kindred.
Here are my thoughts - I am not really sure why Lauren has to fashion change as "God". I can see forming a religion based around change as a constant, but I am not sold on the idea that that makes a God. I like the idea that we shape God as God is shaping us. I am interested enough in the story to want to continue the series though.
439228 I nominate Kindred: A Graphic Novel Adaptation by Damian Duffy

It won the National Book Award
439228 I will be out of town for about a week, so I want to get this thread set up before I go. In August we will be reading award winning books. Any award will work, but here are a few award lists to get you thinking!

Eisner Award
Harvey Award
Ignatz Award
I must admit friends that I had no idea about awards for comics or graphic novels. I hope those lists help!

A Few Reminders About Nominations

- Each member may nominate one book AND may also second one book that has already been nominated.

-If you want to only nominate or only second a book without nominating anything that is fine.

- If we get more than 10 nominations then the 10 books with the most seconds will go to the poll.

- There are no minimum page counts for a book to be nominated.

- Books must be first in a series or a stand alone unless the group has already read the book in the series that came before the one being nominated.

- Nominations will close the afternoon of July 15th

439228 This is the discussion for Parable of the Sower (Earthseed, #1) by Octavia E. Butler by Octavia E. Butler

In 2025, with the world descending into madness and anarchy, one woman begins a fateful journey toward a better future.

Lauren Olamina and her family live in one of the only safe neighborhoods remaining on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Behind the walls of their defended enclave, Lauren’s father, a preacher, and a handful of other citizens try to salvage what remains of a culture that has been destroyed by drugs, disease, war, and chronic water shortages. While her father tries to lead people on the righteous path, Lauren struggles with hyperempathy, a condition that makes her extraordinarily sensitive to the pain of others.

When fire destroys their compound, Lauren’s family is killed and she is forced out into a world that is fraught with danger. With a handful of other refugees, Lauren must make her way north to safety, along the way conceiving a revolutionary idea that may mean salvation for all mankind.

439228 This is the discussion for The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick by Philip K. Dick

It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war—and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan.

This harrowing, Hugo Award-winning novel is the work that established Philip K. Dick as an innovator in science fiction while breaking the barrier between science fiction and the serious novel of ideas. In it Dick offers a haunting vision of history as a nightmare from which it may just be possible to wake.

439228 I LOVED this visual adaptation of one of my favorite books. It makes me want to check out more graphic novels of classic books.
439228 Because there are only 2 nominations for this genre, I am not going to set up a poll. Our July reads will be

Akira, Vol. 1 by Katsuhiro Otomo
