One I really liked was:
"When everyone knows you're a monster, you needn't waste your time doing every monstrous ..."
Oooh I liked that one too! I should have written these down as I read.

Here is the final set of questions:
30. Who ended up being you favorite character and why?
Nina actually. I love her snarky-ness (not a word?) and how strong and smart she is. I hope she is okay after the drug and doesn't become addicted.
31. On page 392, Matthias tells Nina that Kuwei is "one of us" Who do you think he is referring to as "us"?
I don't know. At first I thought he meant "us" was a Grisha. Which Kuwei did end up being. But Matthais isn't one. Or is he (ha ha)? Maybe he meant he was someone who would help them with their cause. Or an outcast like them?
32. Kaz has the thought that: survive, survive, survive is how he has lived his life. Do you see this as in sync with his character? Do you see him as a character that survives through caluculated plans or luck?
I think he survives through both. He smart and quick on his feet and knows how to read people/situations. But he seems also have many plans in his head for "what ifs", even if he doesn't share them. I think if all his calculated plans worked he would be a millionaire by now.
33. Do you have a favorite quote from this book?
Oh man I already returned it, but I love the one where Inej says something like "I'll have all of you or not at all" saying he needed to share his secrets and shed his fear of being touched.
34. What lesson or lessons do you think the author was trying to teach us through this story?
Ummm maybe that everyone has their own talents and you need friends to accomplish things? Who knows..my brain is a little fried this morning from staying up to finish. Or something about the best laid plans of mice and men.....
Except the ending was almost like....don't have friends or care about anyone because they will just get you into trouble? Terrible I know.
35. Were you satisfied with the ending? Will you read on in this series?
Ugh I am so annoyed about Inej! I really liked her and feel bad because she was so close to freedom and going to find her family. I am DYING to find out what scheme Kaz has next so I'll definitely read on.

Chapters 27-36
26. Wow, this was an exciting section! Kaz shows up after his encounter with Pekka Rollins covered in blood and lies to the group about finding him. Any new thoughts on what you think happened between Kaz and Pekka in that cell?
This was nerve racking!! I kept gasping and yelling when I was reading. I have a feeling it wasn't Pekka. Or maybe he killed him? I just think that would be too obvious and we are going to find out something else happened. I'm dying to know!
27. When Matthias showed up outside of Nina's cell with Brum, he totally had me thinking that he had betrayed the team! Did he fool you too?
ME TOO! I yelled out loud and my husband stared at me and told me to relax. But I couldn't. I was SO MAD! Thank goodness he is a good actor...poor Nina!
28. Brum reveals that his people have been experimenting on the Grisha for at least 15 years. So apparently the Grisha are worth keeping alive only if they use their abilities under the control and direction of the Fjerda. Now that Matthias knows the truth about what his people have been doing, do you think he'll still return home after he gets his pardon (if the team is successful)?
I don't think he will return home. I think he will pick Nina and maybe stay with her wherever she goes. I don't think he will be able to face his home town and it's people now that he knows what's going on.
29. Wow, those Tidemakers were scary! We've now seen Squallers and Tidemakers fight our team. Will they face Inferni? What would an attack from jarda-parem-taking Inferni look like?
Yuck I hated that! Where did they come from? Who are they working for...or are they rogues? I am afraid an attack from the Inferi might be a fire storm, or maybe causing people to spontaneous catch fire.
30. The team's plans keep getting thwarted, and now with Inej captured, do you think the whole team will make it out alive?
I am so worried about her!!!!! She has to escape she is one of my favorites! I still don't think everyone will survive, but I hope they do. This doesn't strike me as a happy-ending type of book.

21. We have gotten a report on the audio version, but to those reading the book, how are you finding reading so many POVs? Do you feel the book is flowing well, or do you find it disjointed and hard to follow?
The multiple POV are okay because I like learning about what each person is doing and their back story. However it is making the action go slower, so sometimes I am just dying to find out what happens next.
22. I am having an issue with the ages of the characters (I find them inevitably at least 18 in my head). It seems like the author has written a LOT of backstory and responsibility for a group of characters all under the age of 18. Is this a situation where the ages are dictated by the "YA" category, or do you think the author made the characters this young for a purpose?
I'm not sure about this. I definitely feel like they are older (except Inej). In my head Nins is in her late 20s and Kaz even older (probably because of the cane). I agree they have extensive back stories and have done s lot in their short lives. I also think maybe they are young to show that they are all really determined to change their lives and that their lives are dangerous and it's hard for people to live long lives.
23. The group has entered the prison. Do you think they will be successful in their mission? Do you think Bo Yul-Bayour is in the prison? Or do you think the whole job is a wild goose chase?
I don't think he is in the prison. I bet he will be at the special ceremony. Or he is already dead or already escaped. I just hope they can get back out.
24. We find out two interesting tidbits about Jesper in his chapter. Did you find either one of these surprising? Do you think either will play a part in the story, or is it just to help us better understand his character?
I was surprised by both!! I had no idea he had a crush on Kaz! I guess I was wrong about him falling for Inej. I wonder if he will get hurt because Inej and Kaz will get together. Poor guy. I also am shocked that he's a Grisha! How the heck had he kept that quiet? I think both will be important in the story.
25. We finally find out the rest of Kaz's backstory and why he wears the gloves. At the end of the section, Kaz has completely gone off mission and has Pekka right where he wants him. Do you think he will kill him? And how do you think the rest of the group will react when they find out what he is really doing?
I am so worried he will get caught! I don't think he will get a chance to kill him here. I think the rest of the group will be furious.

Chapters 18-20, pages 202-254
16. We get a glimpse of Kaz feelings for Inez. Were you surprised? How do you think their story will evolve?
Not surprised really. I think that there may be some problems because he is asking her to do the most dangerous thing and if she gets hurt or killed I don't know if he will be able to think straight. Also I'm thinking Jesper may have some feelings for her as well.
17. Kaz shares a bit of his backstory with Inez, and considerably more with us. We are introduced to Jordie, the Hertzoons and an innocent, dependent Kaz. What were your thoughts reading about it?
Oh I felt so bad for them! Poor Jordie was the man of the family and so he wanted to act like a real man and take care of himself and his brother. I can't believe he was hustled like that. They definitely took advantage of his naïveté because you could tell Kaz thought of them as family. I can see why Kaz is so dark and trusts no one now.
18. They finally landed on Fjerda. The heist plan is revealed. Matthias has a plan of his own and implies that Nina might have one too. Will they make it? At what cost? Is the gang going to break apart before the end?
I think they will make it, but in worried Nina and Matthias will ruin it with their own secret plan to kill the Shu. I understand their reasoning, but I'm jut so worried for the others. I don't think they will all survive the journey, and I am afraid Jesper will be the expendable one (when someone asked what his role even was I was a little suspicious of that too).
19. We learn more about Nina and Matthias backstory. Now, their characters are better shaped. Did it change your opinion for either of them? Can you see them escape their prejudices? How do you think their story will evolve?
[For those that have read the Grisha trilogy: The hatred between Grisha and the Fjerdans run deep. Grishas are burned to the stake like witches. The Grishas armies burn villages and destroy the land. Is the original Grisha trilogy explaining how all this started?]
I love reading about their story. What an impossible situation. They are really strong characters which I enjoy. Ninas snarky comments are great. I am surprised they so readily shed their prejudices or at least could put them aside. I think it shows that they are not a strong biases as they thought. I hope they can not betray each other again and at least be able to be around each other without wanting to kill the other.
20. The company is attacked by a drug-empowered Grisha. The competition is getting tighter. Is their mission as clean as they were led to believe? What role Bo Yul-Bayur will play if he gets his freedom?
I don't think Kaz ever expected it to be clean. With that kind of drug available they had to expect to see some kind of magical adversary. Why else would they have been hired by the merchant instead of sending his own men. I am not so sure he will go with them willingly.
Nov 27, 2015 06:17PM

I agree, Nancy!"
I definitely agree with this. I'm hoping that this is what will happen for Kaz and Inej, but I'm not so sure.
Nov 27, 2015 06:15PM

11. With new developments in some of our characters back stories, which one did you find the most interesting and why? Did it change the way you viewed them? And how?<\b>
I am so happy we are getting back stories! I think Ninas is super interesting. I want to know more about the Grishas vs the druskelle. I especially want to know how she developed a relationship with Matthais. It changed how I view him and her.... Is she actually an evil person for turning him in? Is he really super up tight and thinking he's better?
12. Kaz comes a little unglued... What's your take on that? Is he truly heartless and self seeking like he likes to be seen? What did you think of what he did to Oomen, and do you think that revealed anything?<\b> I think it is the pressure getting to him. It is taking everything in him to plan this mission and Inej almost dies before they even leave. I don't know if it revealed and of his feelings for her or not. He's just so hard to read! Obviously Jesper has feelings for her so that may lead to trouble.
13. We get to see the history between Matthias and Nina! Who's side are you on? And who do you think Matthias will choose in the end?<\b>
I love it! I am on Ninas side for now, but she did betray him so I'm not so sure. I could've swayed to his side if we get to see the rest of the story. I am afraid he will choose his people instead of her.... He went through a lot in prison.
14. There are a lot of references that translate to today or modern history: street gangs, slavery & ships, human trafficking (brothels), and underground arenas for entertainment. Do you find their hard circumstances justify their criminal ways, or just make you care for them despite them? <\b>
I think it just makes me care for them despite it. Also it makes me love them as characters.
15. Lastly! what's with kaz's gloves?! Hands stained by blood? Too sensitive to touch? Any theories out there?<\b>
I think he has weird phobia of touching people or people touching him. Maybe something to do with his past?

Chapters 5-9, pages 69-133
6. Putting the plot and characters aside for a moment, what do you think of Leigh Bardugo’s writing? If you regularly read YA how does it compare in quality. If this is your first YA book, is the quality of the writing what you expected?
I really like the writing. I think the quality is good and better than some other YA books. It flows really well and I like they way she is obviously holding some things back.
7. In Part Two, we meet Matthias Helvar. Nina said, “Helvar is driven by honor and only honor. You can’t bribe or bully that.” Do you think that statement is accurate based on what we learn about him during his rescue?
I am not really sure. He can't only be driven by honor or he wouldn't have killed the wolves that he holds so sacred. He obviously values his life more than honor (not saying there's anything wrong with that) or he would have let them kill him. I guess it depends on his definition of "honor". Also he's in jail for doing something that probably wasn't for honor.
8. I enjoy world building that has enough connections to the real world that I can picture what’s going on because of this relationship, but the scenes are still original and creative. I think Bardugo does a good job with this concept. My favorite scene like this so far has been (the spoiler is my favorite) (view spoiler). What connections have you thought were particularly well imagined?
The lizard was so creepy!! And they already gross me out a bit so that didn't help. Helvar's connection to the wolves was interesting and I hope we learn more about his past/ his people. I also like the connections to the real world. I love the map at the beginning showing that this world is obviously based off the real world map.
9. Since Wylan turns out to be Van Eck’s son, how do you think his role with the gang will play out?
Hmm I'm not sure. I'm still confused about why he left his fathers house in the first place. Is it a trap? Or does he really want to become a street rat. I think his inexperience will turn out against them, but I'm hoping he rises above the expectations.
10. Now that we have met all six members of the gang, do you have a favorite?
Inej is my favorite. She is sneaky and seems like she could be a good person, but has been put in terrible circumstances. She wants money so she can be free, not just for the love of money. I also really like Kaz because he seems so smart!

In case anyone has that on their TBR ;)

Chapters 1-4
1. Do you like the book so far? Why did you decide to read it? Is this a genre you normally read?
Yeah I like it a lot so far. I decided to read it because it was suggested for the BOM and the summary sounded awesome. I read some fantasy and YA, but not tons. Anything with magic in it though (and some sneaky street thieves) and I'm in !
2. During the parley in chapter two, Kaz tells rival gang member Geels: "A secret's not like coin. It doesn't keep its value in spending." What does Kaz mean by this? Do you agree with him?
I agree with this. It sounds like he's saying when you have a secret about someone they will do a lot to keep it that way. Once you tell someone, it's not longer a secret and thus doesn't have the same power over people.
3. Inez seems to have led a very interesting life so far. What do you think her relationship with Kaz is? Does she have romantic feelings towards him? Is Inez someone you would trust? Is Kaz trustworthy?
I think she wants to look up to him as a mentor/older brother, but can't help that she is attracted to him also. I wonder what will happen there. I would never trust Inez, unless I was someone like Kaz who is just as un-trustworthy. So no, Kaz is not trustworthy. I think even Inez should be wary of him...he seems like the type to only care about himself.
4. If you could have a magical talent like the Grisha, what would you want your talent to be? Which category of Grisha types (listed in post 102) do you think would be most helpful to us in the real world?
I don't know much about the Grisha world other than the quick glimpses we've been given in this book (I haven't read any others). I think being a healer would be super helpful and being a summoner would be really cool.
5. Have you read any of Leigh Bardugo's other books? If so, would you recommend reading her Grisha trilogy before reading Six of Crows?
I haven't read any of her other books, though the first has been on my TBR for a while. I hope it's okay that I didn't read it and thus don't have the background on Grisha
