35559 To make life a little easier for everyone, I've put together a spreadsheet to keep track of all the BRs/BOMs and other books we are going to start ticking off, starting in about 12 hours. This is by no means an official spreadsheet, I've just created it for fun simply so that I can keep track of who's at what.
Also, it will simplify things for the captain/other co-captains to post our weekly progress.

I might have goofed up on recording somebody's list, and if so, do let me know. Also, posting this in post#4 for quick access.

35559 If I were to finish reading a book before the "official" start date of a buddy read, and I go ahead and discuss it later, will I still be eligible for BR points? How would I claim points in this case?
Do I claim page points when I finish reading then claim the additional BR points when I officially discuss the book? Or wait to add the complete set of points only once I discuss in the BR thread?

That's an interesting thought!

35559 Fun questions..!

1. If you had to choose your five favorite books, what would they be?
I have way too many favourites and it's difficult to choose from them. I'm just naming random 5 ones from the top of my head
1. The Lord of the Rings
2. Memoirs of a Geisha
3. Of Mice and Men
4. A Game of Thrones
5. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

2. What is your favorite sea creature?
Seahorse. I love how it looks!

3. Name of your favorite television show?
F.R.I.E.N.D.S. I keep watching re-runs of the show even now. I think I must know every dialogue by heart.

4. What is your favorite hot drink?
Coffee. With milk. Without milk. With cream. Without cream. Any which way. I heart coffee.

5. What is one thing in your life that you would never, ever do?
Sky dive. I have a mortal fear of heights.
35559 I've begun reading the book, but I'm going real slow because I don't want to finish before the 8th. I've read several books by King before and I think he's an outstanding writer, not just in creating suspense and horror, but in delivering a story that is original in its plot. I never got around to reading the Dark Tower series before, because honestly, I didn't know what to expect. And yes, once you've read a couple of books by a writer, you form an image of his writing which is hard to dispel (like Rowling, whose The Casual Vacancy has been on my shelf for ages, but I simply can't bring myself to read it).

At this point I'm curious about the man in black. Is he for real? Is he an apparition? Can't wait to find out.
35559 Not strictly related to the book, but something to feed on about Tolkien: 10 Things You Might Not Know About J R R Tolkien
35559 Tolkien and Lewis were best friends? How intriguing! So it isn't just a mere coincidence that two great works of fantasy were developed in the same time period? I wonder if the two writers ever sat together and compared notes, then one decided to weave his fantasy world for children while the other created fables for grown-ups?

I agree with you. I wonder if Tolkien was being difficult in his language on purpose. Did he intend only serious readers/his fans to enjoy the history of Middle Earth? I have read both the Hobbit and LOTR and they seem easy enough to read. But I wonder if the rest of his works, that speak of earlier times, read in much the same vein as this book?

35559 Weekend approaches and hopefully I'll be able to finish off the tome of a book that The Eye of the World (Wheel of Time, #1) by Robert Jordan happens to be.

I was wondering what Buddy Reads/ BOMs you guys have planned/signed up for so far. Maybe we can list down our plans and collate it at the start of the thread so that it's easier to track when the spreadsheet comes along and send reminders to people when their start dates approach.

Here are the BRs I've signed up for:
November
01: The Silmarillion
03: The Gunslinger
12: Crime and Punishment
17: Outlander

January
01: Atonement

When are you planning to read this? I might be in for late November, although my calendar is fit to bursting with all the BRs I've planned..!

35559 We don't celebrate Halloween in India, but I quite like watching it when it's played out in TV shows and movies. All the fancy costumes, the themes, all that candy... So much candy! *Dreamy*

By the way... Thank you folks for some great recommendations for audiobooks. I'm trying out the librivox app on my phone and I've started listening to The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells . I have to admit that sometimes I drift off and lose my concentration, then I have to play back and listen again. Maybe I'll get used to it after a while.

1st Jan sounds good. I guess more people will join in if we start around that date.

Mods, could you please set up a thread for us for Atonement by Ian McEwan with a tentative start date of 1st Jan?
