After reading Daphne du Maurier's, Rebecca and now Jamaica Inn, I think I'm warming up to the genre of gothic. Maurier's stories have the ability to give you the creeps, without having any horror characters, they just bring out the evil in humans. I think she's made a fan out of me.

I'm reading Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth by Reza Aslan. Since it's non-fiction, it will only qualify for the letter R for the author.
