September 2013 Takeover Challenge

2013 - Finished
2015 - Failed
Progress: 7 out of 7 (Dancing All Night: 4-7 books)
“Wild Card”: Since I'm the “Archduchess of Audio,” I have the power to grant you two “Wild Card”* options. Replace any two categories below with whatever you like, as long as you listen to it on audio.
CATEGORIES: Ten Things That Are On My Mind
• Latest Kick...Wrapped Up in Mysteries: I’ve been reading more mysteries lately. Choose a book from this genre. Or, if you read the dead tree version, wrap up several books in the same paper (making them all look exactly alike), shuffle them, and then a week later pick one to read:
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë - *** - 9/6/2016 - 507 Pages - Mystery
• Blue: My favorite color is blue: Read a book with a cover that is predominately blue. Check out listopia!
Fat Chance by Nick Spalding - *** - 9/3/2016
• “V” is for...: I’ve gone vegan! It has been a whole year now. Wow. It might be hard to find a book with a character who has chosen a plant-based lifestyle, so read a book with a “V” in the title, or by an author with a first or last name that starts with “V.”
Knowing Your Value: Women, Money, and Getting What You're Worth by Mika Brzezinski - ***** - 9/15/2016
• This Kitchen is Green Powered: Since green is the official color of vegans, and I love to cook, read a book with a cover that is predominately green. Or where the main character is a chef.
• Love That Dress!: I started a shelf entitled love-that-dress. Not much on it, yet, so help me add to it by reading a book that shows a beautiful dress:
Happy Ever After by Nora Roberts - **** - 9/20/2016
• Animals: I’m an animal lover. Read a book with one on the cover. (It does NOT have to be a book about that animal.)
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children: The Graphic Novel by Ransom Riggs - ***** - 9/10/2016
• Beach, Mountains, Desert: I really need to sell my house and move to something smaller. But where to retire? The beach, the mountains, the desert? Help me by picking a book depicting any one of these locals:
Stars of Fortune by Nora Roberts - **** - 9/13/2016 - Beach
• Do You Know Jack?: My favorite hero is Jack Travis in Smooth Talking Stranger, by Lisa Kleypas. Read a book with a character named Jack in it. Or one written by a Jack.
• Challenge Book: I love challenges on GRs, making them and participating in them. Read a book that is the first one for a new challenge, or helps you finish off one:
I Wasn't Strong Like This When I Started Out: True Stories of Becoming a Nurse by Lee Gutkind - **** - 9/8/2016 - Finishes a challenge
• One More Time: I love to reread my favorite books, often by audio. Revisit one of your favorites. Or try a book via this media delivery system.

July: Baby You're A Firework
Duration: 7/1/2016 - 7/31/2016
Progress: 7 out of 25
In the US the 4th of July is a big event. We know, however, that a lot of our members do not live in the States, therefore, I've decided to make this a challenge based on you and one of Katy Perry's hit songs titled "Firework" because each of you has a spark that, if you haven't already, you've just gotta ignite. Cause baby you're a Firework. :)
History of Fireworks:
"Fireworks were invented in ancient China in the 7th century to scare away evil spirits, as a natural extension of one of the Four Great Inventions of ancient China, gunpowder. Such important events and festivities as Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival were and still are times when fireworks are guaranteed sights. China is the largest manufacturer and exporter of fireworks in the world.
Fireworks are generally classified as to where they perform, either as a ground or aerial firework. In the latter case they may provide their own propulsion (skyrocket) or be shot into the air by a mortar (aerial shell).
The most common feature of fireworks is a paper or pasteboard tube or casing filled with the combustible material, often pyrotechnic stars. A number of these tubes or cases are often combined so as to make, when kindled, a great variety of sparkling shapes, often variously colored. The skyrocket is a common form of firework, although the first skyrockets were used in war. Such rocket technology has also been used for the delivery of mail by rocket and is used as propulsion for most model rockets. The aerial shell, however, is the backbone of today's commercial aerial display, and a smaller version for consumer use is known as the festival ball in the United States." Gotten from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fireworks
For this challenge you may:
1) Use the following list of works to create a spell-it-out challenge. Read books that begin with each of the corresponding letters of the word you choose.
2) Read a book with one of the words listed below (from list of types of fireworks) in the title.
3) Read books with fireworks on the cover.
4) Read books with words that correspond to the 4th of July like independence or whatever words would correspond with your countries celebration.
5) Any combination of the above.
Break: Completed 2015
Dahlia: Completed 2015
Aerial Firework: these items are chain-fused fireworks that propel a series of aerial shells, comets or mines into the air from collectively attached tubes to produce various colors, noises, and effects. Aerial Fireworks come in a large variety of effects and sizes and are the most beautiful of show pieces of the consumer fireworks (a show in a box). They are also called "Cakes" or "Repeaters."

Survive Your Own Apocalypse
Duration: 6/1/2016 - Til ?
Progress: 66 out of 68 (Master of Disaster; Read 10 or more books)
Step One:
Disaster has struck! The world is in chaos and you are now on a quest to create a new world and survive chaos. Choose a disaster/catastrophic event from the list below and read a book that features that event:
V: Victoria Laurie; Better Read Than Dead - **** - 8/5/2016 - 296 Pages
O: One Plus One by Jojo Moyes - ***** - 6/14/2016 - 368 Pages
L: Lorna Landvik; Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons - ***** - 6/1/2016 - 512 Pages

I: The Immortals by Jordanna Max Brodsky - ***** - 7/29/2016

R: J.D. Robb; Judgment in Death - ***** - 6/25/2016 - 356 Pages

P: Paul Cornell; Warcraft: Bonds of Brotherhood - ***** - 6/17/2016
T: This Heart of Mine by Susan Elizabeth Phillips - *** - 6/29/2016 - 432 Pages
I: I Wasn't Strong Like This When I Started Out: True Stories of Becoming a Nurse by Lee Gutkind - **** - 9/8/2016 - 320 Pages
O: Origins by Ilona Andrews - ***** - 8/4/2016 - 157 Pages
N: Nora Roberts; Savor the Moment - ***** - 7/5/2016
S: Scott Snyder; Batman, Vol. 1: The Court of Owls - **** - 6/30/2016 - 176 Pages

Step Two:
Choose where you were when disaster struck. This can be a town, state, or country. Read a book that is set in this location:
H: The Happiness Project: Or Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun by Gretchen Rubin - ***** - 6/23/2016 - 352 Pages
O: Daniel O'Malley; The Rook - ***** - 12/7/2016 - 496 Pages
N: Ted Naifeh; Courtney Crumrin, Volume 3: The Twilight Kingdom - ***** - 7/20/2016
O: Oz: Ozma of Oz by Eric Shanower - ***** - 5/23/2017 - 200 Pages

L: Leaves on the Wind by Zack Whedon - ***** - 1/10/2017 - 152 Pages

Step Three:
You are pretty resourceful, you can opt to rescue yourself or to have someone (perhaps your favorite book character) save you from peril. Choose a hero, heroine, or yourself by reading a book featuring your favorite hero, heroine, or a character who shares your name or that was written by an author who shares your name. You can also do this one as a Spell-It-Out of their or your name:
C: Cut & Run by Abigail Roux - *** - 7/7/2016
U
R: The Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion - **** - 7/11/2016
R: Rysa Walker; Timebound - ***** - 8/16/2016 - 366 Pages
A: Animal Magnetism by Jill Shalvis - **** - 6/30/2016
N: Ted Naifeh; Courtney Crumrin's Monstrous Holiday - ***** - 9/3/2016 - 128 Pages

Step Four:
As with most disasters, the area you are in is now may be uninhabitable or much different from what it once was. You may choose somewhere safe that you wish to now live (think space travel or perhaps move to a magical realm) or choose a book which depicts how the world has changed (think dystopian/post apocolyptic stories). Read a book set in your new world. This can be a fantasy land or a real place (Perhaps not all of earth was affected).

You have now developed some special abilities. Read a book that showcases your special abilities:
F: Frequently Asked Questions by Bill Barnes - *** - 6/20/2016
I: Ilona Andrews; Magic Binds - ***** - 10/11/2016 - 328 Pages

R: Nora Roberts; Stars of Fortune - **** - 9/13/2016 - 336 Pages

Step Six:
You have now found other people with unique abilities and formed a team of five. You can name your team and read a book that spells out the name of that team or you can choose four books that feature each of your fellow team members (you have already read one about yourself):
F: Jamie Ford; Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet - *** - 8/1/2016

Cleaning out the TBR closet
Duration: 6/10/2016 - 12/31/2016
Progress: 26 out of 30
I joined Goodreads in 2012, and I still have books on my "to read" shelf from back then. They just stare at me... mockingly... asking me when I'm going to either read them or remove them from my shelf...
This year is the year I am going to read the books I have left on my tbr that I added in 2012. Would you like to join me?
This reading challenge is simple...
>sort your "to read" shelf by date
>pick the books that you are going to read which have been on your list the longest and set yourself a goal. You may decide to read all of your books from the oldest year, or you may just take the oldest 20, or 50, or 5 books on your list. Completely up to you how you set your goal and how many books you read!
I would appreciate it if you post your thoughts on the books once you finish them. Was it worth waiting for? :)
