35559 "I just read Seduction in Death and I don't think it has been used for anything yet. I think it was being saved to use in wheel a thon." (Sheila)

I wasn't sure if we could use it because you started/finished it before we were eligible for bonus rounds. I'm still hazy on that rule.

35559 @Carmen -- I'm so glad she wasn't physically hurt -- accidents are scary enough with all the yelling people. I hope your insurance people straighten out the crazy lady.

(You know, I always thought smh meant "So much hate" and I found out a few days ago it's really "Shaking my head". Clearly I am not hip in the ways of the 'net.)

35559 Sheila, I've forgotten which shelf is your "available to read" one, and I can't find it in the thread.

Do you have Even Dogs in the Wild (Inspector Rebus, #20) by Ian Rankin Even Dogs in the Wild available?

How about Night Terrors? Or Night Moves?

I also Grandkids Gone Wild but I didn't want to search too far in case I was on the wrong shelves.

35559 @ Carmen I put you in the spread sheet :-)
35559 It's a very short book -- I think at message 5 Laura was done and I caught up at 11 :-)

I really like reading books written by autistic authors; it gives real insight into their perceptions.

My son has Asperger's so I'm also personally interested in this stuff, but I also volunteer with children with special needs.

35559 I like the idea of starting our giant chain early. And we've almost got a 15 chain as well.

Can anyone grab the (starts with) "Warrior" spot at #20 in the chain from Ashley? I think she doesn't really want to read that, but was willing to take one for the team. Or, Sheila, if you have a book that starts with "Dog" I can try to tag onto it. I've got a really good library available, and I'll read almost anything :-)

I should finish my books by Tuesday evening -- is that about where we are? If you have a lot of books, maybe we should move some around. I'm guessing Sheila is going to run out of stuff to read pretty soon. If we finish the basic rounds, that opens up a huge vista of bonus stuff.

Next week I will be traveling and not able to check in much, so I'll need to have my bonus assignments lined up so I can send them in whenever I find some internet.
35559 Thanks Nancy! I was glad we both read the book in a day!

The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism by Naoki Higashida

35559 But it is society that I want to accept the idea of different as real and OK.

I just finished the physical copy, and I'm getting the kindle version from the library so I can see the afterward. Mine ended with Higashida's short story (view spoiler)

I want a society that accepts difference, even differences that require accommodations. We do need to label people as different when they are different. Putting children like Naoki in a regular classroom and punishing him for not following rules would be terrible. The problem is the idea that different is bad, that different is less than.

I loved Naoki's voice, but I didn't hear him saying he wasn't different. He was saying he's still valuable, he is worth loving, he has important things to say.

I gave it 4 stars, because I wanted a few more acknowledgements that different people deal with autism in different ways. There are few things that are true about everyone. Of course, the author was only 13, so I don't expect him to fully grasp that yet.

35559 So, captains, another odd question! The Reason I Jump The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism by Naoki Higashida

I got both the hardback copy and the kindle of The Reason I Jump from my library, because I like pages but I don't like carrying things around. I've been reading the physical copy at home today, and it has 135 pages and I was going to count it for the Page Jumping event.

But I just checked and the Kindle version has all this extra stuff in the back and is 193 pages. If I read that stuff, am I cheating? I want to read it for the buddy read! I guess it's just as if I read 60 pages of an extra book that doesn't count for wobble...

I feel like in any contest I'm in I always find the screwy questions.

35559 @Sallie, you can also feel free to push me off my extra spots. I have both the kindle and the hardback for The Reason I Jump, and the kindle has extra material in the back which pushes it up to 150+ pages. So you could grab the 100 - 150+ spot.

Oh, it looks like the Chihuahua book works. Never mind...
35559 I just started as well.

I have a son diagnosed with Asperger's, so I've dipped my toes in some of these issues. His language skills are great and he's very bright, but from kindergarten on he always seemed a bit different from other kids. Learning about autism really helped understand him and give him the tools to succeed, as well as figure out where upcoming problems might be. I'm looking forward to this book to see another's boy journey.

My nephew has special needs, so I spend a lot of time in his class and have seen and worked with kids with a much more difficult diagnosis. So that's my background :-)

35559 @Erin, can you see the spreadsheet? That's where I'm pulling the picks.

No one has claimed the last naked arm in event 3 . We have LOTS of empty spaces for FIGHT club coaches -- do you have any books about fighting or wrestling or boxing or cage matches or something?
You can also read books for our chariot decorations. Carmen has her name down for a short book (100-150 pgs) but hasn't picked a title so if you had something you could read today you could grab that.

Strategically we are looking at completing base rounds as quickly as possible so we can work on the bonus books. The fight club books and chariot decorations give us points but they aren't required to move on to bonus rounds.

35559 @Ashley, did you finish Shadow Kiss for Event 5 yet? That's the book with 60% green for our Tapir colors. We all need to read for Event 1, 2 and 5, so I've been getting one of each done before going back to find empty spots everywhere else.
