35559 I hope everyone is having a great weekend!! I haven't had a lot of time to post - I do taxes and the tax season in the US was extended to May 17th, so work is busy until then. I am getting some reading done and it should pick up after next week. Happy Mother's Day to everyone who is a mother!!
35559 DQ Day 5: Chapters 19-end

20. Charlotte has a very bad reaction to being returned. Do you think this is normal? Why do you think she reacted so extremely?

I think she finally found love through Bess/Eliza and wanted that more than the comforts of a wealthy home.

21. Do you agree with Alexandra's decision to not pay Ned? Do you think she was right in doing this?
I wasn't surprised at her decision.

22. Alexandra seems to be very affected by the events that have happened. She seems less afraid, although maybe more reactive. She also manages to go outside for a short time. Do you think it will last? Will she improve? Why?
The story fell apart a little while before this for me - it all felt too rushed and neat. Which means she'll be cured!

23. The two women come up with an interesting arrangement for Charlotte and came to understand each other better in the end. Do you think that this could have happened if Bess hadn't lied?
I think this was totally unrealistic and felt false.

24. The ending had lots of happy events. Did you like it? Do you think it was realistic?
I'm glad Charlotte was happy, but I didn't not like the last part of the book. The author should have taken more time to develop this part of the story.
35559 DQ Day 4 - Chapters 14-18

15. Knowing how Alexandra's parents died and seeing her state of mind after being surprised by Dr. Mead, Eliza, and Charlotte in masks, has your perception of Alexandra changed in any way?

Not really. I can understand better how she came to be the way she is, but I don't understand how she thinks a home with no love and isolation can be good for a young girl.

16. What do you think of Bess running away with Charlotte? Looking at her reasons do you think she is being selfish or doing what is best for Charlotte?
This really mad me things about how kids are so often at the mercy of adults with no good solutions. Was Charlotte better off being closed in a house without love, or on the run without money but lots of love?

17. What do you think of Lyle and his willingness to help Bess escape with her daughter? Do you think he will remain in Bess's life?
I think this was an easy way out for the author to start to wrap up the story - not very realistic.

18. Was anyone surprised by Ned's theft of Eliza's money or subsequent betrayal of Bess? What kind of deal do you think he made for himself in exchange for information about Bess?
I wasn't surprised at Ned's actions.

19. Charlotte certainly went through a lot in a short time during this section. How well do you think she handled the reality of being on the run with Bess? What do you think her reaction will be to being returned to Alexandra?
It seems like she did better than most kids her age would have, especially coming from the upbringing she had.
35559 DQ Day 3: Ch. 11-13

11. Do you think the author has been able to give Bess and Alexandra individual voices? Do you like books with multiple points of view?

I'm listening to the audio version, so very definitely different voices, accents, etc. I do like books with multiple POV's, although I'm not quite as sure about how the author has divided the POV's up in this book, spaced out so far apart.

12. What do you think ‘Eliza’ and Agnes were talking about in the kitchen? Do you think either Agnes or Maria know that Charlotte came from the Foundling home?
I don't remember this part. No, I don't think Agnes or Maria know where Charlotte came from, and I don't think they really care.

13. I think that Alexandra will get much worse re her fears of the outside after the mask prank. Do you think her thoughts about ‘Eliza’ will suffer because of it?
Probably.

14. Do you believe that Dr Mead was telling the truth about not knowing about what happened to Alexandra’s parents? Why has he lied about who ‘Eliza’ is?
I have no idea what Dr Mead is up to, but I think he does know more than he's saying. Just like Bess/Eliza was able to convincingly lie about who she is and her background to Alexandra, I think Dr. Mead is able to lie about what he knows.
35559 DQ Day 2: Ch. 6-10

6. Were you surprised to find out Daniel had a wife? I personally was super surprised as I originally believed him when he said he was single. What do you think of the way Daniel died?

No I wasn't surprised at all.

7. How do you think Alexandra Callard knew about Bess and her daughter?
This part is hard to understand, since she never goes out and it doesn't seem like anyone visits her. Maybe Dr. Mead or his father or grandfather had something to do with it?

8. What do you think of the way Alexandra and Charlotte live? Do you think Alexandra keeps Charlotte home to stop her from being recognized or because she is truly scared of the real world?
I feel really sorry for Charlotte. I keep wondering if she'd be better off where she's at, in wealth but with a mother who has a mental health problem, or in poverty with a mother that loves her.

9. "Eliza" has been fired on her first day. What do you think of Alexandra's reasoning for firing her? Do you think part of Alexandra knows that she is Charlotte's real mom?
I think Alexandra is jealous of Eliza and her instant connection to Charlotte, but I don't think she knows who she is.

10. Do you think Bess will find a way to still see her daughter? How?
I don't think Bess could give up on her daughter now!! And I'm not certain she'll be fired. I am wondering what Dr. Mead's role is in all of this.
35559 DQ Day 1 - Chapters 1-5

1. How are you liking the writing style ? Are you enjoying the story so far?

I wasn't sure what to expect - this isn't a book I would normally read, but so far it's kept me interested.

2. After reading that opening scene, what do you think of the practice of the Hospital taking babies based on a lottery (the coloured balls in the bag) ?
The whole scene was so sad and upsetting. The women who didn't get picked and had no other options tore at my heart. And I couldn't understand how the wealthy ladies could find entertainment in this.

3. At some point Bess says that "knowing she [Clara] could be anywhere instead of nowhere at all was torture even more exquisite." Implying that not knowing where her child is is worse than knowing she's dead. What's your opinion ? Or would you rather not know ?
For so many years Bess thought she knew how her daughter was being cared for. And to find out the reality is something different, and not know what that is, would be so difficult. Is she being taken care of? Or abused? Or worse?

4. What do you make of the child's father, Daniel Callard ? Everyone keeps asking Bess if he's really dead. Do you suspect there's more to Daniel than we've been told so far ?
I didn't really question this while reading the book.

5. Time for your theories ! Who do you think claimed Clara on the 28th of November 1747, the day after Bess gave up her baby ?
My three options right now are that one of the ladies watching the lottery claimed Clara, or that someone from Daniel's family claimed her, or there is something underhanded going on with the hospital.

35559 I hope everyone is having a great weekend!!

When we finish a book, do we just put it (along with the date) on the spreadsheet?

35559 I have to say I haven't heard of 99% of the books you all are talking about. I did read The House in the Cerulean Sea and loved it and Get a Life, Chloe Brown - just okay- but those are the only ones I recognize. I can't really pick a favorite book, but my favorite authors are Kristen Ashley and Mariana Zapata - both romance authors.

35559 Hi everyone! I'm Sandy (she/her) and I live in southern California. I'm divorced and my only kids are fur-babies. This is my 5th time playing TT. I do taxes and normally I'd be done by now, but the deadline has been extended so I'm working for another month.

I read mostly romance, but will read other genres for challenges. I haven't read any of the DW books. I've put two of them on hold through Overdrive - if they become available on time I'll try and participate in the BOM discussion. I'm looking forward to TT starting!!!

My shelf is tt-8

35559 OK - I'll keep thinking. I misread about a monster rather than a quest. I'm still getting hang of the monsters, but I'll look at the other ones and see if I can come up with something.

Hi Halli
I was looking at the other gold quests, and it looks like they are all set up where you read 4-5 books and get 10 gold. Not sure if we need to stay in that same model for the chance of the quest getting picked up?

Quest name: Lady Halli's and Lady SandyL's Quest for the Pot O' Gold (and we have St Patrick's day in a couple of months!)
*Read a book with a green or gold cover (at least 60%)
*Read a book set in Ireland
*Read a book on this list of Magical Creatures
....trying to think of some other potential tasks

35559 I think it makes sense - I've updated my posts from 12/30 and then I did the 2 battles with the rock and ate the egg. Can you see if I did it right? :-)

Thanks!!!
