She signed away her freedom
Starved for affection, young Piper Delaney surrenders her life to a Master. But there is no love—only abuse. She’s told she can’t leave; she signed the slave contract. Years later, beaten and starving, she hears an English Dom say the contract’s illegal. Unenforceable. And she runs.
She reclaims her life and rises above the nightmare that was her past.
But her enslavement left scars. She longs for love, but the only men who truly attract her also terrify her--Dominants. Hoping to conquer her fears, she visits Dark Haven, but the sounds of the club are too much.
When a submissive panics, Sir Ethan steps in.
The powerful English Dom recognizes the shivering submissive in his lap. Years before, he’d corrected her Master’s deceit about a contract. She’s come a long way since then. Cynical at being pursued for his wealth, he finds Piper’s honesty compelling. She’s intelligent, brave…and she needs him. What Dom could resist?
He’s the Dom she’d dreamed about—perceptive, firm, and utterly self-confident.
His voice pulls her from panic attacks. His arms enclose her in safety. He treats her like a person, not something to mistreat. As he helps Piper overcome her fears, she starts to fall in love.
Then her past finds her and destroys…everything.

As he straightened, she stared at him…and felt barriers dropping. Leaving her open. Defenseless. Oh, she was in so much trouble.

At first, when we meet ᴘɪᴘᴇʀ at her current situation-being enslaved by her "Master", I just couldn't understand how someone could want to be treated like that, and I mean to that extent because I know there are Master/slave relationships in BDSM. Yeah, I have never read one of those but I know they exist. Can someone be so innocent or gullible to believe one of those contracts can't be nullified just by withdrawing your consent? That was Piper's case. I understood why after finding out how she was brainwashed, plus she entered that relationship very young and it was her first experience in the lifestyle. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 even before that, the lack of affection in her childhood didn't contribute.
Thanks to an unknown 𝑒𝓃𝑔𝓁𝒾𝓈𝒽𝓂𝒶𝓃, she finally gets free. Years later we see how she made a life for herself and owns a business, which provides household managers and services. Even with her success, it's not enough. She wants a romantic relationship but for her bad luck the vanilla guys don't wake her interest and the ones who do are dominants. And she's swear off them after her bad experience.
At a friend's party she meets 𝑺𝒊𝒓 𝑬𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏. Yeah, he's a baronet and dominant. The author did a good job portraying him. I almost could picture this 𝑒𝓃𝑔𝓁𝒾𝓈𝒽𝓂𝒶𝓃. Sexy as hell. But her first impression of him isn't good thanks to a misunderstanding. Who would have thought they would meet again thanks to her business?Trust me a little further, sweetheart. My job is to build you up, not to destroy you."
I liked how their relationship progressed, even if sometimes I felt it was really slow. But after all she suffered, Ethan understands and is so patient with her. What starts just like a way to help her overcome her fears with the lifestyle turns out to be a second chance for both of them. Because Ethan has his own demons too. A betrayal that cost him greatly.
There are two antagonists in this story. First we have the 𝗷𝗲𝗿𝗸 step-brother, I thought he was going to be the cause of the start of the climax but then I realized I was only in the middle of the book. So that wasn't. Although he did his damage playing with Ethan's demons, it was temporary because he realized Piper was not that kind of person. Then we have the 𝘌𝘕𝘚𝘓𝘈𝘝𝘌𝘙's comeback. Piper was going to deal with him sooner or later thanks to the step-jerk. This is the climax. Piper has to face her past and fears and choose how to live her life from now on...with her Dom.
Why 3.5 stars? I don't know how to explain it. It had a pretty good beginning but after the stepjerk I just felt off. It was still entertaining but I think there was unnecessary filling, just a little bit. Maybe it also has to do with the side couple, Stan&Dix, they take some pages here. I'd have preferred if the plot was just centered in Ethan & Piper. Nonetheless, I enjoyed this story very much.
This book was definitely so much better than others that call themselves BDSM (there is a reference in this one to another famous bdsm book, which I just couldn't bear to read more than five pages and cringe everytime the female protagonist spoke. So yeah, I said it.) I want to read the whole series now.
