“ All too often women believe it is a sign of commitment, an expression of love, to endure unkindness or cruelty, to forgive and forget. In actuality, when we love rightly we know that the healthy, loving response to cruelty and abuse is putting ourselves out of harm's way. ”
“ So often survivors have had their experiences denied, trivialized, or distorted. Writing is an important avenue for healing because it gives you the opportunity to define your own reality. You can say: This did happen to me. It was that bad. It was the fault & responsibility of the adult. I was—and am—innocent.” The Courage to Heal by Ellen Bass & Laura Davis ...more ”

[close] Join us and ask author D.M. Cherubim about the groundbreaking and controversial YA book, "Mary Baker and The Eye of the Tiger," a fantasy adventure that includes the Holy Spirit and wizards and witches in the same novel. "Mary Baker" has already received public accolades and scathing reviews, ranging from Readers' Favorite, which called it "rare and unusual" and gave it a Silver Medal review, to Kirkus Reviews, which derided it as a "New Age Hogwarts." The typical review from young adults and teenagers? "Awesome!" Meet the controversial and irascible author, a former award-winning journalist, humor columnist and Washington, D.C. bureau chief, on October 12, 2013, from 8 to 10 p.m. Ask her anything, but try to stay near these general ideas: Do magic and spirituality belong in a fantasy adventure book? Is there such a thing as New Age magic? Or is this just a thinly veiled American Harry Potter? And is this safe at any speed for children and teenagers? Wands and swords advised.

[close] The Face of Dysfunction: The Three-Headed Monster The Three-Headed Monster: Childhood Trauma, Addictions, Mental Illness. Healthy families usually produce healthy families and dysfunctional within families is usually replicated in some form. So what is dysfunction? The word means that it does not work right, the way the unit functions is not healthy; a dysfunctional family is a family that just does not work right-the unit is not healthy because at least one family member is routinely, and systematically harming at least one other family member; or worse, everyone in the family is behaving in a damaging way. I hope this does not sound familiar to you, but if it does not, then your family is the exception and to be commended. Feel free to integrate Goodreads authors and books into the discussion; fiction and nonfiction.
