The Story to Chapter 13

5. Margaret is lying – and probably not just about one singular thing. Do you think she’s even telling Alice and Hayden the same story? Personally I’m also really curious where Margaret’s sister Laura is – to me it feels like she might be key to the whole story… anything specific that made you perk up?

I think she is giving pieces of the same story to Alice and Hayden.

6. Similarly, it was kind of an aside but I thought it was interesting when Margaret mentioned the Ives family’s rivalry with the Pulitzers. Is it just a random coincidence that Hayden is a Pulitzer-prize winning author who now also gets to talk to her? Especially since she requested him? And he has a bunch of family issues too?

I did not make any connection here.

7. I was a little shocked when they were already kissing 25% in – and then not surprised when Hayden rejects Alice. Do you think he’s telling the truth when he says “I’m not going to hook up with someone whose dream job I’m about to take from them”? Or is there something else going on?

Well, since his truth comes out in this section, it makes sense.

8. We get quite a bit of detail on Alice’s job and research process as a journalist: what she’s searching for, working with fact-checkers, etc. Do you enjoy these types of details, i.e. minutae of characters’ jobs and hobbies?

Not really.

9. I’ve been to Hearst Castle, but long before I actually knew anything about him. The Ives family seems to be quite obviously inspired by him (and I guess he was name-dropped for plausible deniability). Is there a specific family dynasty you’re really interested in?

No, I don't care about stuff like that.

10. Bonus question: So… anyone else feel like they’re reading Evelyn Hugo 2.0?

Chapters 1 to 7

1.) Emily Henry is a popular contemporary romance author and a fair few of her books have been previous NBRC BOM selections. Any expectations for this book going in?

I usually enjoy Henry's books, some better than others, so I'm assuming I'll enjoy this book as well.

2.) What are your first impressions of Alice? And sending that drink to Hayden?

I like Alice and I loved that she sent the drink to Hayden. I like that she doesn't let him diminish her enthusiasm.

3.) Would you agree to the month long trial or tell Margaret she's a nutter and move on to something else? Why do you think Margaret is doing things this way?

Absolutely I'd agree. I don't really have any idea why she is doing things this way (other than the author using it as a way to push Alice and Hayden together.)

4.) After learning a few tidbits about Hayden's family and how he grew up, did you opinion change a bit on his character?

I think he'll turn out to be a better guy than he initially seems. I don't know that his family and upbringing have much to do with it - the big grump always turns out to be a good guy! :-)

I'm almost done with my hard book. I do see the two spots for the next round are already claimed. Should I just finish it and it will go for something else or can we use more than 2 hard books in a round?

I guess I'd better get working on trying to either reshuffle books or finish quests!! I have over 100 books earmarked for various unfinished quests and 38 unfinished quests. 😊 If nothing else, the XP points will put me that much closer to the next level, and I'll have more tasks to read for again!

Do you think there could be an exception for certain tasks - for instance the 5000 Leagues Under the Sea? I've been putting my books that don't have anywhere else to go there, I have 29 books and only 480 leagues so far!

Re: the new rule about old books......

I am in the middle of a lot of the quests and I have books slotted for some tasks that I've read all the way back to 2022, but haven't finished the quest yet. I read primarily romance and some mystery, and not so much of the fantasy, sci fi and paranormal that so many of the tasks are geared towards. Does this mean I'll lose those books and have to start over on the unfinished quests? I'm not complaining about the rule - I just need to understand it.

When a new quest is posted, I don't use my old books for them.
Maybe any new quests should have a reminder that only fresh books after whatever date (and the date should be listed since you can't really tell later on)?
