35559 Discussion Questions : Day 1 (Prologue - Chapter 5)

1. We have been introduced to a few important characters - Lucy, Christopher, and Hugo. Plus the off-page persona of Jack. What do you think of the characters so far?
So far I'm liking them and finding I want to know more about them and their circumstances. I want to know more about Lucy's family that she says doesn't love her, about how Christopher's parents died, about why Hugo has stayed on Clock Island so long and why Jack Masterson didn't write for so many years.

2. We get a riddle right away in the Prologue:

"Two men on an island and both blame the water
for the loss of a wife and the death of a daughter
but neither ever married, and neither's a father.
What is the secret of the girls and the water?"

Then Hugo thinks to himself that "Five years ago, it [the ocean] had brought low the small, strange kingdom of Clock Island." Do you think the riddle is related to what happened five years ago? Any speculations on what it all means, assuming you haven't read ahead?
I'm not big on riddles, so I don't take too much time trying to figure them out. I'm not sure what, if anything, this one means.

3. At the beginning of Chapter Two, Hugo says that he used to dream about living in Greenwich Village, but now that he can actually afford it, it doesn't hold the same appeal. He basically says that success kills motivation. Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?
I think its more a matter of maturing - when we're young and idealistic certain things seem attractive and exotic. But when we get older we realize they often all that we thought they were when we were young.

4. What do you think of the wishing game Lucy plays with Christopher? Do you think this game and mindset are healthy? Do you agree with Lucy that it gives them hope, or do you agree with the social worker that it just gets their hopes up?
It's always good to have hope.

5. Why do you think Jack finally started writing again? And what might be his motive in holding a contest for the only copy of the new book?
This is one of the things I wonder about. I have no idea why he stopped in the first place and why he started again.
35559 The last time I read this was during the previous buddy read here - it was my first time and I absolutely loved it! So this is a great opportunity to read it again. I'm up to chapter 7 so far and I"m loving it just as much. Except - now I know what's going to happen!

35559 DQs – Day 3 Protective Impulses-Pert Thing

11. What do you think about the revelation in the garden/the haunting? Did you see it coming, and do you think there are others involved with the “curse”?
It wasn't surprising. I don't know if there are others involved.

12. What do you think about Mr. Rochester sending away Jane and the staff? If you have read the original, how does this change Jane’s agency, and do you like the change? Either way, why do you think the author made it Mr. Rochester’s choice?
I thought he thought he was being noble to not let others be hurt by the haunting. I did not read the original book so have no opinion on this.

13. Have you ever visited an Apothecary’s Garden? Would you be interested in seeing one? Do you grow any herbs or are you interested in growing any?
I have not, but I would like to. I grow lavender and basil - I eat the basil and just enjoy the lavender.

14. What do you think about the scene with Miss Ingram? What does this tell you about Mr. Rochester’s character and did that seem consistent with his character so far? Did his explanation make sense to you?
I think he was naive about how the situation would affect Jane.
35559 DQs Day 2 - Baneful-"My Own Wee Thing”

6. Jane gives Rochester a black-coloured thumb-sized stone to keep with him as a protective talisman. Do you believe in talismans? Please tell us about an object that you keep with you as a talisman?
I'm not sure if I believe in talismans and I don't have any.

7. Between some of the chapters narrated from Jane’s point of view, we get chapters from Rochester’s point of view. What do you think of these “interludes”? Do they help or distract?
I wish there was more from Rochester.

8. We are introduced to Dr. Poole. What did you think of this character particularly with regards to Jane meeting him in the poison garden? Were there any changes in your opinion after reading Agnes’ conversation with Jane about the late Mrs. Rochester?
The exchanges make me think he may have had something to do with Antoinette's death.

9. We have been told several times about a curse on Thornfield. Then Jane follows Rochester to the graveyard where his family members are buried. At this point Jane says “This was a story of heartache. Everyone in Mr. Rochester’s family had died before their time, especially the females. Then his wife had done the same.” Do you think there is a connection between the curse and the early deaths?
No, I don't think there is a curse

10. We have been given information about Jane and her origin? What do you think of this twist in the tale?
Very interesting!!

35559 DQs - Day 1 - Prologue-Blackthorn

1. A paranormal retelling?? of Jane Eyre - this prompts the question about the original or let's call it the "source for inspiration". What is your relationship to Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë? Have you read it? Loved/liked/disliked it?
I've never read it.

2. What about Retellings? Is it a genre you like/avoid?
I do enjoy re-tellings - often times they are an updated interpretation of an old story. Since I've never read Jane Eyre, I don't have anything to compare this one to.

3. Jane Aire as a witch in a school for orphan witches? How do you like the setting of this alternative Victorian world where magic is at least tolerated?
I like it.

4. What are your first impressions of Jane and Rochester?
I immediately liked Jane, and I think I'll end up liking Rochester. So far he hasn't appeared much in the book, but I think he's the tortured hero.

5. What do you think about the occurrences in Thornfield? Are they really caused by supernatural elements or is it human action?
It's hard to know at this point, but I'm guessing they are supernatural due to the tags on the book.

Goodreads is not letting me add a read date - I think I previously mentioned this. I sent a question to them and they told me to clear my cache - it didn't help. I'm not sure what else to do.

Edit - I think I've fixed the problem - fingers crossed!

35559 Goodreads seems to be acting up - I can't put a read date in. I'll try to update any book postings when it starts working again.
35559 I've finished and I didn't realize it was going to be a cliff-hanger. I guess with a trilogy that should have occurred to me. :-)

Great points about Haymitch, Laura. I was thinking along those lines for whoever survived the current game, but didn't think about how it affected him.

I haven't seen the movies, so I don't know what happens next. The only thing I knew going in was that Katniss survived. It was interesting how she didn't want to fall for Peeta - never wanting to get married or have kids so she wouldn't have to send them off to do what she did.

35559 I'm so sorry about your job, Laurla -- that sucks!! Best of luck in finding something bigger and better in your search.
35559 I'm still surprised at how much I'm enjoying this book. And I'm not really finding Katniss unlikable. No, she's not warm and fuzzy. And she's not particularly good at reading the scene, but she's also only 16. Her resourcefulness makes her seem older, so her emotional immaturity is more apparent.
35559 I've never read the books or seen the movies, so I definitely a HG virgin. I'm just getting started with the audiobook, and so far so good. I've just gotten to the point where Katniss has volunteered as a tribute (all these terms that have been thrown around that are now making more sense!) I'm hopeful the book will keep my interest, as I'm not a big fan of YA or dystopian themes. But the author is pretty good at describing the scene and mood and right now I'm invested in what happens next.

35559 Hi fellow teammates!

My name is Sandy and I live in Southern CA. I work as a tax preparer, and thankfully have more time to read now (although it's still busy with stragglers and IRS letters!) I don't have any kids, but have 3 golden retrievers and a cat, and I help run a dog rescue. I mostly read romance and mystery genres. I'm looking forward to see what's in store for us in this new challenge!
