Hey, I just finished reading that and thought that it was an amazing story. Could not put it down.

This is a really good one to read first. Gives you a taste of Dickens but not overwhelming. Glad that you enjoyed it!

24794 I thought that I would revive this thread since now is a good time for it. With the ending of 2011, what books are on your top reads for the year? Any surprising finds or any rereads that still charm you after so many reads? Just curious how everyone's year of reading went.

24794 Thanks for that Jim!

24794 Thanks for the TOC Jim. That sounds like a perfect schedule to start with and if sometime during the middle of the read, we want to extend the time period that would be easy to do. I also just downloaded the free Kindle version, might have to find a version at the library.

24794 The winner for the Depths of Winter buddy read is Anna Karenina! This is a six week buddy read, so break out your warmest blanket, put an extra log on the fire and be prepared to enjoy some wonderful Russian lit.

That sounds like a fine time to start this one. Does anyone have a physical copy of the book? It is hard to figure out how to do a discussion break down from my Kindle version. I think that six weeks would be a good length of time for this read. How about January 14th - March 1st? That is a little over 6 weeks.

That is actually the Russian buddy read. It is going on in January also.

24794 I enjoyed your breakdown of the book. These are the fun reasons for reading so called kids books, they are fun stories for the child in you, but they also have really serious underlying adult themes that can challenge you.

I have to agree with Laura, it does pick up much later in the book, however I almost needed a spreadsheet for all of the people that was introduced. There was times I had no clue who the people were, but I just kept reading hoping something would jog my memory.

I have 1Q84 on my short list to read. I have heard it is really good, what do you think so far?

24794 The one that I remember the most was The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles. It was read to me by my 4th grade teacher and it got me hooked! I loved horses as a kid so I read everything by Marguerite Henry, Walter Farley. My parents also had some children classics with red covers that I devoured!

24794 I just finished this last night and must say it was pretty exciting. It was faster paced than I thought it would be, I can also see where kids would find this a fun book to read. It is fun to think about a whole other world right beneath the floorboards!
