22225 Got Trick of Light by David Hunt delivered from Thriftbooks.com today.

22225 My fellow Book Buying Addicts, I think for us vowing to buy no more books, be it this year, this month, or this week, is a pie crust promise. Easily made, easily broken. :-)
22225 FYI, the site is back up and running, so hopefully service from Bookdepository should be back to normal soon.

I was thinking the same thing. I finally got to start it today and it's definately holding my attention.
22225 I went to check out Bookdepository today and found this message:

"Sorry! Due to the volcanic eruption beneath the Eyjafjallajoekull glacier in Iceland and subsequent grounding of all air traffic in Europe, we’re experiencing delays and supply issues. As a result we’re suspending our service to North America, and apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. We hope that flights will resume soon and we can start the service again. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Customers outside of North America may order via BookDepository.co.uk although some of these deliveries may also be subject to delay."

It never even crossed my mind that commerce service from the UK would be shut down like air travel from the UK has, even though in hindsight it is so obvious that that would happen. It'll be interesting to see when this will all clear up.

Ilean! You can't tempt us with that and not tell us where it is! lol

Sweet! Nice haul, Valerie.

My Silver Borne (Mercedes Thompson, #5) just arrived the other day, too! And I got Zendikar: In the Teeth of Akoum: A Magic: The Gathering Set Novel and Nine Gates from Borders, also. I think that takes me up to 17 for the month so far.

I don't know what to read first, since I've got 6 new library books in addition to all these new purchases.

End to End Game (3 new)
Apr 15, 2010 06:18AM

22225 Thought I'd try another game. Here's how you play. First person lists an author's name:
Chloe Neill

Next person lists another author whose first name OR last name begins with the LAST letter of the first OR last name of the previous author:

So since Chloe ends in E and Neill ends in L, either
Edgar Rice Burroughs (First name begins with E) OR
Crabbe Evers (Last name begins with E) OR
Laurell K. Hamilton (First name begins with L) OR
Hugh Lofting (Last name begins with L) would be acceptable
And so on.
No repeats allowed and middle names are ignored.

I'll start with Jim Butcher. Next person has to give an author whose first or last name begins with an M or an R. Let's see how long we can keep this going.

22225 Got a couple more used books from the library:
The World's Last Mysteries
Shakespeare and the Jews
The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory

22225 I got a great delivery from Amazon today:
What Lies Within (a Sam Casey Mystery #5) by S.D. Tooley Holly Blues (China Bayles Mysteries, #18) by Susan Wittig Albert Changes (The Dresden Files, #12) by Jim Butcher Black Magic Sanction (Rachel Morgan/The Hollows, #8) by Kim Harrison

I also picked up a couple used from the library:
Eaters of the Dead
Murderers' Row: Baseball Mysteries
The Magician's Tale

22225 Batsap, if you haven't read it already, you are going to love the Brother Cadfael series. Peters is a great mystery author.

You know, after reading about all these great buys, I feel like I'm going through withdrawal. I haven't bought a single new book yet this month. I might have to do something drastic, like stopping at Borders after work. :-)

Nice choice, I've heard some very good things about this title.

It's true, every cent counts, but in my case it doesn't really matter. I very seldom sell books I have bought. I consider myself a chronic rereader. One main reason I buy a book is so I can read it anytime I want, I don't have to wait for the public library to be open or for a library hold to come in.

Oops. Fixed that. Thanks.

What do you mean you need help? I think you're doing just fine. lol

22225 Has anyone else been caught offguard lately by some prices at Amazon? I pre-ordered a couple of hardcovers that originated with cover prices of $25 (Changes and Holly Blues) and they've dropped by up to 60% to only ten bucks! I don't know if this is good or bad for the publishing or book-selling industry, but I sure don't think Borders or Barnes and Noble could match these prices.

22225 1. Are you careful with the spines? Or do you crack your books open to make them lay flat?
I'm careful with mine, I'll open them as far they'll go without forcing them.

2. Do you use bookmarks? Or do you dog-ear the corners? If you do use bookmarks, do you use those fashionable metal ones? Or paper?
I like to use paper bookmarks, so much that I enjoy designing special ones for specific books that I like to reread a lot.

3. Do you write in your books? Ever? If you do, do you make small marks, or write in as much blank space as you can find? Pen or pencil? Highlighter? Your name on the front page?
For the longest time I refused to write in any of my books, but I do now have a very few exceptions, like a couple of reference books. But even with those I only use pencil and make as few marks as needed.

4. Do you toss your books on the floor? Into book bags? Or do you treat them tenderly, with respect?
I don't toss, but I do tend to leave books on the floor or in my book bag since I hardly ever go anywhere without a book or two to read.

5. Do you ever lay your book face-down, to save your place?
Never! I don't want to risk damaging the bindings.

6. Do you bathe with your books? Hold them with wet hands? Read out in the rain? Anything of that sort?
Not a chance! Water and paper definately do not mix. :-)

7. Are your books lined up on a bookshelf? Or crammed in any which way? Stacked on the floor?
All of the above. I have my books lined up on the bookshelf with books stacked on top in empty spaces.

8. Do you make a distinction--in regards to book care--between hardcovers and paperbacks?
Not really, I don't discrimiante, I treat all of my books equally. :-)

9. Naturally, you love all of your books, but how, exactly? Are your books loved in the battered way of a well-loved teddy bear, or like a cherished photo album or item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for?
Since I like to reread and collect, I do my best to treat them like an item of clothing that's used, appreciated, but carefully cared for.
