My husband will make me watch season 6 with him. Or spoil it if I don't. I think it'll be fine to watch since they will be going down a different path than Martin will in the books. There's so much more to the books, it may help with understanding what's going on by having a bit of a preview so to speak.
I remember him being Roberts bastard. I was more curious why the gold cloaks went after him for the queen. (I know why in the show, but I try to share thoughts unbiased from the show or further books I've read). It just seems like they went way out of their way for a bastard of ba dead king.fear of someone having proof of her incest probably.
As far as a name for the discussion thread-some sort of play on the Small Council? since they sit around and talk? lol Idk...
I would love to join in on Tolkien. I've owned the books and have never read them so a group like this would definitely help motivate me! I'd also love to read Narnia (also own and unread lol).
thoughts while reading:I kind of like that Catelyn acknowledges she pushed Ned to Kings Landing and ultimately his death.
I think Robb's demands are fairly reasonable, but we know that the Lannisters are kind of greedy and will probably laugh and say no.
Apparently Catelyn thinks Robb wanted too much from his demands?
I understand Catelyn not trusting Balon, but why doesn't she trust Theon?
How did Harrenhal end up cursed? It seems like it was cursed before the dragons came (or as they came).
thoughts while reading:It seems like Sam is just as excited about all the books as we probably are.
"There's no shame in fear, my father told me, what matters is how we face it."
"Robert was the true steel. Stannis is pure iron, black and hard and strong, yes, but brittle, the way iron gets. He'll break before he bends. And Renly, that one, he's copper, bright and shiny, pretty to look at but not worth all that much at the end of the day." ← I feel like that's a fairly accurate run down of the Baratheon brothers.
Maester Aemon is over a hundred years old and Mormont wants him around another twenty?! That's a long time to be alive!
I love that Jon is sticking to his vows. He doesn't go to Mole's Town like some of his other brothers, and even though his brother is King of the North, he plans on staying at the Wall, honoring his oath.
thoughts while reading:"Yet somehow it felt as though the world were holding its breath, and the silence made her shiver."
I wonder if this she-wolf they're talking about is Nymeria. The Trident is kind of close to the Gods Eye.
I wonder why the gold cloaks wanted Gendry.
thoughts while reading:So more thoughts on what the comet could mean. Old Nan thinks it's dragons which is the second person (I think) to say that is what it means.
Every time I read about Rickon throwing a fit about wanting his family back in Winterfell, it breaks my heart a little bit. :(
All the direwolves are seriously protective of their owners which is kind of awesome. They have such a great bond!
"Beyond its sky-tall man-cliffs the true world was calling, and he knew he must answer or die." Quite ominous!
thoughts while reading:I think Tyrion is having a lot of fun rubbing it into Cersei's face that their dad sent him to Kings Landing.
If she doesn't trust them, then why does she NEED them? (re: the other council members)
Cersei got a little slap happy. lol
"Truly, sister, you were born to be a widow."
3) Tyrion arrives and is talking to Joffrey about Robb with Sansa right thereJoffrey: "and now her stupid brother is calling himself a king."
Tyrion: "All sorts of people are calling themselves kings these days."
I feel like Tyrion could have been implying Joffrey is one of those people and that Joffrey shouldn't be king.
thoughts while reading:We've heard so many different names and explanations and predictions about this red comet. I wonder if any are actually relevant.
"When Joffrey Baratheon's mood darkened, any chance word might set off one of his rages." Joffrey is starting to remind me more and more of Viserys.
"I am loyal to my beloved Joffrey."
"No doubt. As loyal as a deer surrounded by wolves."
"Lions," she whispered, without thinking.
It's nice to see that she doesn't trust any of the Lannisters anymore.
thoughts while reading:Despite being young and smaller than the other boys, she definitely could do some damage.
So he was there for Ned, not necessarily Arya. Kind of amazing luck that he came across her and recognized her in that crowd!
There really was a lot of information in this chapter so I can only image what's going to happen in this book. I feel like there are probably a lot of hints/foreshadowing and little things we may have missed and will understand when the entire series is over.
thoughts while reading:Ooh! A new location!
"Grim places needed lightening, not solemnity, and Dragonstone was grim beyond a doubt..."
Patchface kind of reminds me of Robert Arryn (Lysa's son). They both have some sort of shaking disease. I'm also quite intrigued by him. I'm curious about what happened to him in the water.
I like Shireen. She seems her age (unlike a lot of the other kids).
"his low birth written plain upon a common face." So rich people/nobility look better?
Who are the storm lords?
I feel like a lot of the issues these guys have all have to do with not getting land they wanted/not being honored enough.
Stannis is kind of jealous methinks!
I can't believe he's considering having his own brother murdered.
That's kind of messed up of them to demean Cressen.
How does she survive the poison!?
A Game of Thrones started with ice and ended with fire so I'm curious if the end of this one is with ice since it sort of started with fire.
Just finished A Game of Thrones, have A Clash of Kings paperback on the way, but will start reading it as an ebook. I can't wait!
thoughts while reading:I wonder how Dany knew what to do.
i love how this book started with ice (in the prologue being North of the wall) and now ends with fire!
thoughts while reading:I'm curious what it is her father is sick with.
I wonder why Brynden never married.
Robb has grown so much- he kind of had to!
Another reference to a Stark being a King of Winter... I really think when the winter really comes it should be a Stark on the throne.
@Roseanne: I wish I could! I've always taken books with me to read on lunch, but there's always so much going on that I rarely get a minute to myself. lolWelcome Brendan!!
