152301 My friends who have read the book and see the tv show disliked overall the book, so I'm not sure you'll see improvement. Good luck :D

152301 A well-known author I never read! Did you read other books from her?

152301 Haha, I agree, this was a perfect moment.
152301 GR groups have only really basic fonctions, so impossible to combine ;)

152301 You have the spoiler tag in the link "some html is ok" just above the text box :)
This scene bothered me a little because it added nothing to the story and it was totally awkward at this point, regarding the relationship.

152301 Apparently, it's her best book for the moment, her previous ones have a more average writing (I haven't read them but people who had read both where surprised by the quality in Uprooted).
Loved this one, the atmosphere was so compelling :)

152301 I enjoyed it a lot too! There was a good humor and it's really nice to see that a princess can decide her own life :)

152301 I didn't pick it for this week but I added it to my TBR in may, as soon as I saw the cover. The 2nd one has a nice cover too, but I prefer the colors of the first.

I haven't read it yet, so it's good to know it's a multi-dimensional book, I've few books like this in my list and I'm definitely really curious to read them.

152301 Which book did you read? The Emperor's Blades

Who is the author? Brian Staveley

Did you enjoy the book? Yes, a lot!

Will you read more stories by this author in the future? Sure! I've to check that the 2nd book in the series is as good, but I don't think I'll be disappointed. I'm happy he is currently working on other books.

152301 I just finished The Could Hunters by an author with my initials. It was a children book and it was pleasant. I really appreciate the world building and one of the characters but the narrator described too much the world, so I didn't really enter the story.

Before that, I read Dorian Gray for the color week. I can't say I liked it as they were loooong descriptions for boring stuff and only 2 sentences when I wanted to learn all about what Dorian did. I'm glad I read it as it's a classic, but it wasn't for my tastes.

Side-reads:
-Books:
Fae - The Wild Hunt (fantasy). I've mixed feelings for this one as the world is interesting but the blurb sold me faeries and they were present for like 15% of the book. Probably a good introduction to the series, but I prefer when the 1st book is more entertaining.
Prodigy (dystopia). I liked the 1st book from the series, but really this one was filled with description of everything (I'm not really interested on reading things like how someone is walking or sitting or whatever). The world building was interesting, the rest was almost useless.

-Graphic novels:
La Bande à Mafalda, nice as usual.
Repossession (iZombie 4), a nice and very weird conclusion.
The Last Musketeer, I just discovered the author and I enjoy the polished work and the nice stories. There's an alien invasion and a musketeer tries to solve the problem.
Injustice: Gods Among Us, Vol. 1 or what happen when superheroes decide to rule the world. Interesting, beautiful art, and I like to see alternate superheroes once in a while.
The Living and the Dead, same author than the Last Musketeer, but it's a silent black and white graphic novel, about love and zombies. It was good too.
A Bride's Story, Vol. 1 it's a manga happening in old Asia, with an unusual story and gorgeous drawings, this first volume was pleasant.

- Short story: The Lady Astronaut of Mars. Recommended here, great sci-fi short with good characters and an unusual story. On top of that, it was moving.

152301 Erica, you're starting by a good one! I've to catch-up with his books for adults (I read some but not in english so I've to re-read them), but I read most of his books for children and enjoyed them a lot. He really has his own touch.

152301 I'm working on the list and we'll have around 200 choices for "A suggestion that didn't make it"! :)

152301 This year, thanks to Goodreads, I discovered plenty of new good authors. Another thing which helped me to move out from my comfort zone (=reading only my usual writers) was the fact I started to use the samples available for kindle. One month, The Emperor's Blade was on sale so it appeared on the Amazon monthly sale page. The cover was pretty but I hadn't heard of the author, so I preferred to check the sample first. I downloaded it, read 4 pages (!) and was in love with the writing style, so I jumped on the full ebook.

I've to say that I'm not a big fan of multiple points of view as there is often one or two characters I don't like. In this book, we follow three siblings, which help a lot to discover the world. I don't read often about characters with brains or feel that the discussions happen between real people, but the book was all along like this. I loved 2 of the main characters, for different reasons, and the side characters were pretty well done too. The society was interesting, the jobs took unusual paths, it wasn't fast paced, some parts were difficult to read and there was a lot of abuse (I'm not a fan of learning more because it's the hard way), so it's a bittersweet book. Anyway, I enjoyed deeply the story.

I haven't continued yet the series, as the 3rd book is due for 2016, but I'll start the 2nd one soon and I'm pretty excited by it as all the reviews say it's better than the 1st one!

Highly recommended to fantasy readers :)

152301 I liked the world building in this one, it was credible. The story was entertaining enough, so I enjoyed it, but it was less compelling than other dystopias I read. The 2nd was disappointing, I hope I'll like the 3rd better!

152301 Good point Kirin, it's true that I like too reading an happy story, which doesn't happen a lot in my favorite genres. From the list, I enjoyed Eleanor & Park. I think I'm more comfortable with teenage or "old" contemporary romances (which have less explicit content), even if I roll my eyes a lot when I read them :D

152301 The TV show cast is very good. Some characters are different in the books and the TV show, so it's a little difficult to compare them, but I preferred Dexter in the show :)
I didn't enjoy all the seasons of the show, but the first were very good and unusual.

152301 I liked this one enough to continue the series (I stopped at #3), but I found the books lacked the humor I enjoyed a lot in the TV show.
