Yes, there are some differences, I think I prefer the book, it has more depth for the characters and I really enjoyed the relationships between them.
We are halfway done with Week 31! You read a book with bad reviews. This discussion thread is solely for your progress. (Book discussions go in individual threads.)
What did you read this week?
Did you enjoy the book?
What is your rating?
What parts, according you, are the biggest reasons for the bad reviews?
I agree with you Laura for the 1st half. My problem with this part is that I think he develops the uninteresting stuff and summarize the interesting one. I'll see with the 2nd half, but I'm not enjoying the book for the moment (and I don't like the characters which is another problem).
Same for me Manda, I read the half while I read the series or just after so I won't miss something interesting. As I've new several series in my To-read, it won't be too complicated to find a book to read.
Goldberry > Divergent is the best in the trilogy from my point of view. In the 2nd, there is a lot of melodrama which can be annoying for many readers. The 3rd could have be lots of interesting things but went to the safe road, so it's just average (and weird from a scientific point of view).
My original choice was The Night Circus too. I'll try to read it this year anyway.I read that The Magicians series improves after the 1st, so you'll probably enjoy this one more.
Uprooted is full of magic with an old wizard, not really at ease with relationships, a young woman discovering a magic empowered by nature and an evil enchanted wood. The story tastes a little like a fairytale and is totally driven by the mystery surrounding the wood. It's one of the must read (in fantasy) for 2015, currently 50% of the 9700 ratings are 5 stars ones. If you want something different, refreshing and compelling, you'll probably be very pleased with this book :)
Introduction:
“Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.”
I recommend a lot (all standalones):- Oz: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz if you want a novel transformed in a comic book, with beautiful drawings.
- I Kill Giants if you want a moving story, very different from what you find usually in graphic novels.
- Nimona if you want something fun, with a fantasy background and a kickass heroine.
Week 42: a graphic novel.October 15 -October 21, 2015
For this week, you can choose a graphic novel, comic book, manga, etc. Something with lots of pictures and people speaking with tiny bubbles. If your comfortable with the genre, just pick something you're interested in. If you usually don't read graphic novels, don't hesitate to ask some advices, the choice is wide and some of them can fit more your tastes than others.

Week 41: a book with magic.October 8 - October 14, 2015
This week will add some magic to your bookshelf. Maybe you'll go to school with Harry Potter, maybe you'll meet some fairies, maybe you'll try to save the world with a long bearded man walking around in a dress and a pointed hat. Overall, it'll be an Abracadabra week!

Jessica, with what you wrote in the Progress Post, it seems we had a similar experience with the book!
I finished it (very fast) and liked the overall story and the writing. The 1st half was moving and I was less interested by the 2nd half because it was focused on the romance (it's probably more interesting when you're a teenager). The 2 main characters were well done, the others were a little unidimensional but helped well to build the story.
For the end, (view spoiler) I think it was a good way to end the story.
It's easy to see why my friends didn't finish or disliked the book. I'm very uncomfortable with the way the characters are depicted (like looking all the women in the breasts and explaining who a boy is under "the fat one"). If it wasn't for the challenge, I'd stopped the book, as the writing is average and the story not interesting on the first 25%.
As I wanted something "light", I started it. I really like it so far, Eli and Park are interesting and likeable :)
