118012 Same timeframe, different characters. Bean, the main character in Ender's Game was one of my favourites, so I'm looking forward to the Shadow series.

I've only read Ender's Game and Speaker of the Dead. Really enjoyed both, for different reasons. While Ender's Game can be classified as a YA novel, the sequel moves from that and goes far deeper into the concept of humanity and other species. It poses far more philosophical questions, ones that aren't so heavily discussed in Ender's Game. While I loved Ender's Game for its action and the incredible game setup, it's sequel felt a more intellectually challenging book that brought up some really interesting questions.

118012 We've got a storm coming in, so lightening is constantly flashing outside my window. Doesn't serve well for getting a good nights sleep!

Cats are terrified, bless 'em. Socks just squeaks all the time. (she never actually meows).

Should be an interesting night!

118012 Both sound really great!

I am in need of being a little bit more optimistic in my life, so it might do me good!

118012 Thanks Kassandra. Results day is two days before, and basically determines the next 3 years of my life. So depending on whether that will go well or not determines if I'll have a good birthday!

I have 2 weeks holiday in the sun during August, which basically for my family means '2 weeks of mad reading while getting a tan'. Plus with trying to catch up with the horrific 4 weeks I had where I didn't read at all, my plan is to make August quite ambitious.

So, the plan:

Genre Challenge Reads:
The Silence of the Lambs
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Murder at the Vicarage

Classic Reads:
Tess of the d'Urbervilles
Dracula
Hamlet
Antony and Cleopatra
The Winter's Tale
Notes from Underground
Emma
The Pilgrim's Progress

Plays/Poetry
Medea
Selected Poems of Byron

And one of the group reads. I'm hoping to add more to that list later on. I'm also tempted to start War and Peace, but it's size is just so daunting that it's freaking me out.
118012 My Summer Reading List has a few that I've been really looking forward to!

The Silence of the Lambs
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Murder at the Vicarage

118012 8 out of 10. And many were guesses!

Hell yes!
118012 I'd happily have all of those win!

Lydia, you beat me to my nomination of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo!

118012 Has a month really gone past that quickly? This year is speeding ahead. August means good and bad things for me - exam results, but also my birthday! Lets hope everyone has a really good month reading. I know a few of us have been finding it tough to break through the dreaded 'readers block'.

August will hopefully mean time sat out in the sun enjoying a good book. Or perhaps a Crime or Mystery if you're interested in our months genre. Or perhaps one of our group reads? Participation has been running low recently... Shameless advertising there!

So, what will everyone be reading this month?
118012 Another month is coming up, and therefore another genre.

This month's genre is the potentially gruesome Crime/Mystery!

If anyone is struggling to think of things to read, you can always check out the 'Best Crime and Mystery Books' list on Goodreads.

There are also genre pages on Crime and Mystery.

So, what are you planning on reading in August?
118012 Is it honestly that time again? Yet again, we want nominations for your genre monthly group read! This month is Crime/Mystery. Should be a really interesting and varied month. Make sure it either is based on crime solving, or is shrouded in mystery.

For some ideas, you can always check out the Goodreads' 'Best Crime and Mystery Books' list

Nominations will close when there are 5 or 6 choices, and the polls will be put up.

Participation in group reads has gone down quite a bit, so it would be great if people could get stuck into them.

118012 One of my friends made me binge watch season 1 with him, which was great fun. I must admit, it stuck amazingly by the book, although he told me it was the series that does it most. The cast is amazing (especially Emilia Clarke as Dany).

I will definitely look forward to reading (and watching) the further books.
118012 What did you think of the first part of A Storm of Swords? I'll probably end up reading it this summer!
Jul 18, 2014 02:58AM

118012 I found that definitely was the case with The Giver. A lot of book on my Summer read list are really long ones, or classics, so I wanted something that would be easy. So I picked that.

It's now just getting my head back into the mindset of reading classics.

118012 Well done, Sandy!!! :D
118012 I found myself getting bogged down half way through the second book, but overall it's a very good book. Just make sure to push through!

118012 You could always increase your goal a bit, Gavin? :)
