By the end of JUNE, we should be through Volume 3 (Marius), Book 4, Chapter 6. (Hopefully, there won't be too many asides. Fingers crossed.)
I'm having a lot of fun with this one. It's making me push my envelope, but it is satisfying my need for accomplishment. ;-)
Just finished Volume II and I have to say that I wish more people were in on this Buddy Read. Hugo's digressions can be a challenge, but overall this story is FANTASTIC! The suspense of the chase through the streets of Paris had me on the edge of my seat. And then Valjean/Madeleine passing out as he was buried alive!! Yikes! Also, I loved the chapter about his thoughts on the innocent women in the convent compared to the criminals in prison. Really just amazing writing.

Working my way through V2, Bk 7 right now. I see what you meant, Cindy. It seems like a long-ass digression (which I think of as signature Hugo). Book 6 was a digression of the milder sort. He seemed to be giving charming asides into the life of the convent. But now that seems just a precursor to his philosophical musings on religion and philosophy. And I'm really ready to get back to the story!!! Bring on Valjean and Javert!

Adding both Ciscernos to my tbr!I'm listening to Esperanza Rising read by Trini Alvarado. It's YA and really very good.
Beach Reads is a fun topic. I never think of classics or non-fiction as beach reading material for some reason. Not sure why. But almost every other genre seems beach-able to me, including biography/memoir. It should be interesting to see what everyone thinks of as a Beach Read.

It has been a productive weekend as I finished off a few of the books I've been chipping at for awhile. Including the completion of the three books I wanted to read for this challenge...Travel the World, 2nd Leg - Europe (April-June)

The only other thing I've read by her is The Enchanted April, which was divine. This seems to be a memoir of sorts and is very charming so far.
