101690 Funny though considering how she said the book's description is all a person should need, yet this group's description wasn't enough to inform her, lol!
Nov 07, 2013 11:22AM

101690 Well, looks like this group is too 'clean' for her tastes, she defriended me and informed me she couldn't stay with a group that wouldn't let her mention books by a certain author. :(

101690 LOLOLOLOL,Soph,but you are right!
Nov 07, 2013 11:16AM

101690 Exactly, and I always read the 1-2 star ratings to see if they mention those offensive elements, fortunately, they often do,and then I will always thank the reviewer for the heads up. :]
Nov 07, 2013 11:10AM

101690 Gee, I don't see where a content advisory is 'censoring'!

It is the same as the book's synopsis,IMO.

Just letting readers know what it contains so they can choose whether or not it contains elements that are offensive to them, same as a movies G, PG,PG-13, or R rating does for movie gowers.

I really hate being taken by surprise by offensive elements in a book that neither the synopsis nor reviewers mentioned, especially if I paid for the book!

101690 Wow Qnpoohbear, the books you have added to the bookshelf have certainly added to my TBR,and I'm sure Soph will be thrilled with all the Austen fanfiction,as well.

Thank You!:]

101690 True, Lark Rise is more period drama than romance, but I just totally love it. If I wasn't getting myself the new Kindle Paperwhite,I would buy the DVD collection.I lived in rural England for 2 1/2 yrs. as a kid when my dad was stationed there,so the beauty of Lark Rise really gets me.

I love 'all' the screwball comedies also, and any clean modern ones, even the not so moral 'The Holiday' where the Brit and American women exchange houses over Christmas!!!!! Also, enjoyed 'When In Rome'.

101690 Will have to try some of those. I know Carla Kelly is good, but she messaged me after my 5-star review of her book 'Mrs.Drew Plays Her Hand',to let me know that not all are clean nor free of god-talk, just the ones by Cedar Fort and Signet publishing houses.

101690 I do not like romances full of angst, either, but I do love, mail order brides/husbands and marriage of convenience,in fact just snagged Sarah M. Eden's 'A Strangers Kiss for $.99 for my Kindle yesterday, which is a marriage of let's say circumstance, lol!

I so feel the same way about love at first sight plots. I can totally believe 'lust at first sight',but my eyes won't stop rolling when an author has either the heroine or the hero thinking about forever when they just met! All I can think is desperate,needy,clingy,possesive,let-me-outta-here,lol!
I love sweet friendships developed into love or even adversarial relationships that develop into love,as long as they aren't too 'snarky'.

Oh gosh and please not one more story of the wounded man or woman who can't let go of the past even when the perfect mate is courting them, cause someone that messed up is not worth it and will test the other the entire book[just like in real life],so I'm wishing for the pursuer to give up,and get someone more worthy!

Sorry, I have no clue why but I have tried 7 different Heyer books and could never get into them.

101690 So glad to be getting more suggestions after I had so much fun reading Pride's Prejudice.

In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larson 464 pgs[bio-memoir/history]
The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Nazi Germany in a year that proved to be a turning point in history.
A mild-mannered professor from Chicago, Dodd brings along his wife, son, and flamboyant daughter, Martha. At first Martha is entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for restoring Germany to a position of world prominence. Enamored of the “New Germany,” she has one affair after another, including with the suprisingly honorable first chief of the Gestapo, Rudolf Diels. But as evidence of Jewish persecution mounts, confirmed by chilling first-person testimony, her father telegraphs his concerns to a largely indifferent State Department back home. Dodd watches with alarm as Jews are attacked, the press is censored, and drafts of frightening new laws begin to circulate. As that first year unfolds and the shadows deepen, the Dodds experience days full of excitement, intrigue, romance—and ultimately, horror, when a climactic spasm of violence and murder reveals Hitler’s true character and ruthless ambition.
Suffused with the tense atmosphere of the period, and with unforgettable portraits of the bizarre Göring and the expectedly charming--yet wholly sinister--Goebbels, In the Garden of Beasts lends a stunning, eyewitness perspective on events as they unfold in real time, revealing an era of surprising nuance and complexity. The result is a dazzling, addictively readable work that speaks volumes about why the world did not recognize the grave threat posed by Hitler until Berlin, and Europe, were awash in blood and terror.

101690 Thanks poohbear!

Yes Loren,Carol Higgens Clark is Mary's daughter. She also has an ex-DIL JaneHC that also writes.

I haven't yet tried Agatha Christie and I do have her 'TTWN' here that came with the PC game, creepy, huh? Sounds good to me,lol!
101690 I pretty much like 'all' genres, including nonfiction!

Do not read space operas or other world stuff, just cannot relate at all.Same with paranoramal romance[except ghosts and time travel situations]!

Have never read Little Women[but just got a Kindle Collection of Louisa May Alcott]but I love Jane Austen.

101690 The BBC produces exquisite period dramas.
Has anyone see their "Lark Rise To Candleford"?

http://www.amazon.com/Lark-Rise-Candl...

I had never seen it when it was showing on PBS,but noticed the DVDs at my library and started watching them by season, and fell totally in love with the series. It is also on Youtube.

The most recent romantic comedy that I've seen and loved was "When In Rome" and Josh Duhamel is such eye-candy,lol!

and another favorite is the wonderful Hallmark film~The Magic of Ordinary Days... Keri Russell and Skeet Ulrich

101690 Hi Loren,WELCOME to the group!:] I do love YA and "Austenland" is on my TBR list but hadn't heard of the other two titles,so thanks!
Nov 04, 2013 07:28AM

101690 Gosh, I know I have so many of these! Most of the old black & white romantic comedies are favorites, and "Christmas In Connecticut" with Barbara Stanwyck has become every bit as much a Christmas tradition to watch for my daughter and I,[after seeing it for the first time years ago on Turner Classic Movies]as "It's A Wonderful Life".

I also have to say Pride & Prejudice Starring Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen

http://www.amazon.com/Pride-Prejudice...

and Love Comes Softly Starring Katherine Heigl, Dale Midkiff... this is one time that the wonderful film by Michael Landon Jr. is even better than the book, because in the book Clark's daughter is just an infant, where in the film Landon has his daughter as about 10 yrs. old and full of fun michief and some hilarious and heart-warming incidents between her and Marty. Not to be missed!

http://www.amazon.com/Love-Comes-Soft...

Which ones do you love?
101690 You may also include those TV shows from the past.I grew up with great anthology shows on television like Boris Karloff's~Thriller, which is now available on DVD from Amazon. The Twilight Zone, and Chiller, plus of course Friday night Fright specials. My 3 kids and I
all loved Rod Serling's Night Gallery,Are You Afraid Of The Dark?,One Step Beyond,Tales From The Crypt, and the fun Monsters.

My favorite horror movie of all time is Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark with Kim Darby which amazingly was a 'made for TV movie'!Won't even watch the trashy remake!

http://www.amazon.com/Dont-Afraid-Rem...

Also love The Thing,The Trilogy of Terror with Karen Black,Alfred Hitcock's~The Birds,Skeleton Key with Kate Hudson,The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and The Others with Nicole Kidman.I seldom watch modern horror, because I don't think it is horror at all, just blood/gore and profanity!

I do also love Asian Horror, because what I have watched does not have the gore and filthy language of most American Horror and it's just so much more atmospheric,so I prefer the Asian versions[reading subtitles doesn't bother me in the least] of The Ring,The Eye,A Tale Of Two Sisters and probably the best Ghost Story movie...The Maid.Dark Water is also a favorite, but the American version is fine, too.I am able to get the Asian versions at my library.
