For me, it was actually a movie...Love Comes Softly, that I saw on the Hallmark channel...several years ago. When the credits rolled I saw it was based on a book by Janette Oke. I wrote that down and got it from my library. Thus began a 2-3 yr. obssession with reading Christian romance.Back in my younger years I had read a few of the racy, graphic romances, and found them just vulgar or ridiculous, so I appreciated the absence of those elements in this new found genre. However, after of a few years I got burnt out on all the religious proselytizing by some Christian authors, and now prefer to seek only clean secular books.Anyway, Love Comes Softly was the book.
There are probably very few[if any] readers of romance who don't love, love, love Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen, and all the film versions plus many of the retellings of the Austen classic. This is the place to share your favorites and please tell us why.Since people have different tastes, please let's not quarrel if you didn't like one that someone else loves, just post the ones that you DID enjoy to share with us. :]
The only retelling that I have read so far,was amazingly a Kindle Freebie, and I totally loved it!
It is Pride's Prejudice by Misty Dawn Pulsipher
I started this book one evening and finished it the next day.Could not leave it alone and if I hadn't gotten up early the morning of the day I started it,I would have read this book in one sitting, but I read until my vision got too blurry to read!
There is wonderful character development, and I loved the setting in a small college town in Wyoming.Just a wonderful, clean, realistic, fun read. The verbal sparring between the heroine and hero are often LOL funny.
I am excited to read more from this author.
Wow, I just found this thread that has a whole slew of 'non-murder' cozy mysteries in the Cozy Mystery group[which I joined] and their bookshelf has over 400 regular cozy mysteries.https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Wow,I don't know how I missed that last night when I was looking at P & P re-tellings when it's on the same page as two that I added to my list- The Journey by Jan Hahn and The Red Chrysanthemum by Linda Beutler! I also selected One Thread Pulled: The Dance With Mr. Darcy by Diana J Oaks and My Own Mr. Darcy by Karey White,so as you can see I am also a huge fan of P & P, but also many other genres besides romance.
I have read several but they were all Inspirational/Christian fiction so now I will be looking for those plots by secular authors.I found a few last night to add to my TBR list. Are the ones you have read/are reading, secular?
Yes, over to the far right on the bookshelf in the horizontal column of each title there is an edit button you can click,it will bring up the space to add your review, choose the shelves[genres it matches] read-start, and end dates. These options should pop up when you click Add Book To Group.First you get a big page then you get the small page.As long as any book adhere's to the limit's of not being sexually explicit, vulgar, and not graphically violent, they should be fine.
Actualy the book is about her experiences from the 50's through college and her marriage to a travelling man so I believe it's through the 90's. Haven't finished it yet so not sure when it ends, but there is some fascinating stuff in there about the events of the decades.
LOL,I also cannot tolerate a long drawn out story before the couple lets their feelings be known.I don't have the patience and don't feel they really love each other enough then, but I also cannot take only one kiss at the end of the book, because I do not feel that is a realistic romance. There should be at least a little longing and lust and a few knee weakening kisses or why would they have any desire to marry at all, lol?I do agree with a friendship blossoming to love makes a sweet romance without all the hassel.
I love a good romance when I'm in the mood for one.Sometimes I want it to be a comedy romance, other times I'm in the mood for lots of verbal sparring between the h/h,but I very seldom will put up with a book filled with angst, until the last 50 pages when suddenly the dopes realize they love each other and share their first kiss,no thanks!
I also do not like instant love at first sight stories, and I think there are far too many of those.I cannot stand when the characters are instantly thinking of marriage and forever with a person they just met!I think it's a lazy writer's plot device and it's just too unbelievable for me.Plus I love the 'chase' and courtship, and don't appreciate being cheated out of that! :]
I really love historical fiction, especially about settling the west[America],but I am also interested in historical fiction of other countries.I have read many, many hf books that were inspirational/Christian and would like some by secular authors, any suggestions?
Of course I must include The Hobbit and TLOTR by J.R.R. Tolkien, the 7-book collection of The Chronicles Of Narnia by C.S.Lewis,the 5 books of the Spiderwick Chronicles by Holly Black, and the 7 books of The Dreamhouse Kings series by Robert Liparulo.House of Dark Shadows: 1 (Dreamhouse Kings Book#1)by Robert Liparulo

Hi Dorcas,WELCOME to the group! Thank you so much for adding to our bookshelf, and for mentioning the mild cussing in some of the books.I was just wondering if I should post a request for members who add books to the shelves to rate them and include reviews.I haven't decided about that yet,but I know I very seldom have ever read a book without reading it's synopsis and reviews[good and bad] first.
I hope you will find new books and authors here to enjoy. :]
I really enjoy the "Love Finds You In..." series by Summerside Publishing.Clean, sweet romances without being 'preachy'.
Since I don't believe in ghosts,I've always gotten a kick out of the spooky haunted house and ghost stories.I believe the last good one I read was last summer..
Ruined: A Novel by Paula Morris
