101690 Good way to put it Loren.

Who wants a guy who can't/won't open up to you?

I want the hero to have a soft spot in his heart for the heroine, and for her to be able to feel secure in/about his love. How/why else could she trust him?

I want to read romances that make me feel good, not agonizing ones!

101690 I think so too,Dorcas.I remember a guy I used to chat with online had a VCR that blocked content.I believe you used to be able to buy them at Walmart.

There are some 'R'&'PG-13' rated movies I would buy on DVD if they could be cleaned up!

101690 Wow, that is a great idea! Thank you for that info,Annette!

101690 I just read my first book by Sarah M.Eden. The Kiss of a Stranger by Sarah M. Eden which I thought by the synopsis was going to be a sweet romantic comedy.Instead it is a horrible book with a villainous uncle you wish you could see die a horrible death, and a useless hero that does nothing to protect the heroine from the uncle, nor had he ever declared his feelings for her yet when I stopped reading at 81% on my Kindle! Certainly not my definition of a romance!
The heroes I fall for leave no doubt in the heroine's mind that he loves her.I totally hate so-called romances where the couple spend the entire book second-guessing 'does he/she love me or not'?

101690 Which do you prefer? I much, much, much prefer stand-alones... or no more than a trilogy.
101690 Hi Laure, and WELCOME to the group.I love sci-fi/fantasy but it must be earth-based as long as it's not something like the new trend of a zombie apacolypse, lol!Just cannot get into other-worlds or space operas,[or zombies which IMO is horror, not sci-fi],and won't even attempt to read books with names or places that I can't even pronounce, unless it's seldom mentioned, lol!

Don't even know what a "new age twist" means, but I'm sure that those who do will let you know.

101690 Thanks Dorcas. I believe the free sample was more noticable before I purchased my Kindle, but I just checked a book page and did find the option under the space where I click to order the book.

I have bought 3-4 books in the past 2 days, and I have a stack of library books here,so I hope I don't get stuck with a lemon before I remember to check out those I bought, lol!

101690 I haven't even seen the option to read sample chapters in I don't know how long,am I missing it somehow?

However,I have also seen reviewers state that even those often don't show what you will run into in just a few more pages, and after you buy the book, you get surprised! Fortunately with Amazon you can get you money back within 7 days. You just can't put that book off to be read later!

101690 Oh I enjoy fantasy if it isn't set in another world, especially YA fantasy,I will watch for it.

101690 HR is what started my love for romance fiction.I will not read explicit sex, profanity, or abuse,so for about 2 1/2-3 yrs. it was all Christian/Inspirational,and much of it was great, some not so great.
Now I prefer to just read nice clean books without all that relious proselytizing, and making God a main character of the story, lol!
Since many other readers are looking for the same thing,I hope my group will be a helpful source of such books.

I enjoy from medieval to 1900's.Marcia Lynn McClure has written two medievals that I love~The Highwayman Of Tanglewood and A Crimson Frost, and there are several excellent Regencies by several authors, but I would love to find more of frontier/colonial America, and I also would enjoy historical set in other countries.

I even read three time-travel romances that I found myself enjoying much more than I expected, but we know these fictional men are pretty much perfect and non existant in the real world, so it's kinda hard for me to see the point of a story that has a nigh impossible relationship, and don't get me started on the new trend of paranormal romances with 'IMORTALS'!

101690 I am just starting to read Mystery fiction.Actually some Amish-themed mysteries are what peaked my interest. So I have been searching for some secular Mystery authors, and so far I think these series sound very good.Has anyone read them?

Nearly Departed in Deadwood (Deadwood Humorous Mystery Series #1) by Ann Charles[crude conversations, much profanity, stopped reading]

Murder With Peacocks (Meg Langslow Mysteries) by Donna Andrews[stopped reading at pg-173,couldn't take the snail's pace anymore. Boring and I only liked/cared about two characters.]

Now I'm reading-Bats and Bones (The Frannie Shoemaker Campground Mysteries) by Karen Musser Nortman and enjoying it so far.

The Quiche of Death (Agatha Raisin Mysteries) by M. C. Beaton
101690 Not sure if grittier is the right word to use,but I hope you all know what I mean, lol.I am a Newbie to the mystery genre.

I'm sure that veteran Mystery lovers will come up with a better description. :)

So who all here loves mysteries?

101690 Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to ask that if you ever see a book on our bookshelf that is not within the guidelines of this group, please let me know by PM so that I can remove it.

Thanks to one of our members I was informed of some books that were recently added that have bedroom scenes in them,so I removed them.

I have the settings set so members may add books to the bookshelf, but for now I am the only one who is able to remove them.I believe a co-moderator[which we don't have yet] is also able to remove books.

Thanks for your attention and hope everyone is enjoying their weekend.

101690 Hi Loren, yes,it is so sad.I forgot to mention that my son was asking about couples married 10 yrs. or longer, because so many marriages never even make it that long.

I did know of 3 that were over 25 yrs. but one of the spouses in each are deceased now.So they were like my parent's generation.I know of two couples now who are crazy in love, but both couples are newlyweds, lol! ;]
Nov 08, 2013 10:09AM

101690 Wow,congratulations Loren! What did you write?
Nov 07, 2013 06:44PM

101690 Yes,actually, there are extremely few happy marriages no matter what the age of the spouses. My adult son asked me the other day out of every single marriage couple we know, could I name one couple who is truly happy and in love, and sadly I cannot!

My parents are deceased and so are my late husbands but they were the first unhappy May/December marriage that I saw.
Nov 07, 2013 05:56PM

101690 I'm glad things worked out for you ladies, but it's just something I always swore to myself that I would not accept for myself.

My late husband of 30 yrs was only 4 yrs.older than me.I have no idea why I have always been so against it.My parents were only 3 yrs. apart but my dad did get prematurely gray.Maybe it was the jokes I heard,I really don't know.

After I was married several years and came to know several such couples,I really turned against it,because in every single case the men are possessive, controlling, jealous jerks, but I don't know why/how I had come to swear to myself before marriage that I would not marry anyone more than 5 yrs. older than myself.

It's great that it worked for both of you. :)
Nov 07, 2013 11:32AM

101690 I feel the same way and also about the hero being over 5 yrs. older that the heroine. That just really turns me off. That's why I'm not a fan of governess stories,he's a father for pity's sake!
