8 Book Characters You Wish Could Run for President

Posted by Hayley on November 5, 2016

Election season is almost over in America. Whether you're helping to choose our 45th president or not (hello, reader friends from other countries!), we invite you to take a brief step away from the world of actual politics and enter the world of fictional politics.

We asked on Facebook and Twitter: If you could nominate a fictional book character as president, who would you pick? Your top answers are below. Who would get your vote?

GANDALF
The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien

Potential running mates: Galadriel, Frodo Baggins, Treebeard, Dumbledore (magical crossover edition)

ATTICUS FINCH
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Potential running mates: Anyone who reminds voters that he is not the Atticus from Go Set a Watchman

DAENERYS TARGARYEN
A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin

Potential running mates: Tyrion Lannister, Asha/Yara Greyjoy, Drogon the dragon

ROLAND DESCHAIN

Cakej us I vote for Hermione Granger!

message 252: by Aimie (last edited Nov 07, 2016 11:58PM) (new)

Aimie Matilda... not because she had magic, but because she was unafraid to point out wrongs when she saw them like calling out her foster dad for reversing the odometer. Oh, and she was great at math and I love math too :)

Aimie Marya wrote: "Hermione & Mathilda!!"

Hermione for president and Matilda for deputy

message 254: by Francesca (new)

Francesca No offense to Hermione but I would bump her to VP and vote for Minerva McGonagall as President. I love Hermione but she has a tendency to let her emotions get the better of her sometimes whereas McGonagall is very level headed. Plus McGonagall is tough but fair and she'd be great at leading a country.

Same goes for Daenerys. I like her a lot but I don't think she makes a good ruler because she's too hot headed and doesn't think before she speaks and acts a lot of the time. Tyrion Lannister would be my vote for President out of the Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones world. He's intelligent and cunning and fair.

Mufaddal Abdulrasul Gandalf!!

message 262: by Princess78 (new)

Princess78 Although I gave only two stars for Kill a mocking bird I vote for Atticus , he has the most tallent for law and justice. Gandalf is too idealistic and Hermione too honest :)

message 263: by Zenith (new)

Zenith Lakra Hermione ..

Leeza Ak wrote: "Muamer wrote: "I'd vote Gandalf! He'd make Middle-earth great again!!"

That is so true!
#GANDALFFORPREZ!

message 265: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Sweden I am going to go ahead and vote Hermione Granger. She finds a way to make things perfect without having to make large unfortunate sacrifices. Talk about surreal. In this case though, it is all fiction so....she's perfect!

message 266: by Rafael (new)

Rafael Gonzalez I vote for Hermione Granger

message 267: by Keiry (new)

Keiry Ko This is fuuny! I can't decide!

message 268: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Holmes Gandalf keeps way to many secrets. And can he really do anything more that make fireworks?
Hermione is a policy wonk.
Probably would vote for Hermione in the end.

message 269: by Karen (new)

Karen Either Atticus (TKaM version) or Daenerys/Tyrion with Jon Snow as the Sec of State. ^_^

Well...anyone would be better than Comey, who was picked by Obama even after my friend's law firm wrote him a letter and asked him to reconsider it on the basis that Comey was involved with torturing prisoners under the Bush Administration.

message 275: by Tonka (new)

Tonka Of course Gandalf ;) <3

message 276: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Raymond W Crowley wrote: "My choice did not make the list. I would love to be able to vote for Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan Sr. Of the above group Atticus Finch would be my choice."

Jack's already been President in several of the later novels, beginning with the end of Debt of Honor.

Laura; Although he wasn't listed, I agree Aslan would also be an interesting President but by US law he would still need a running mate, so I might be interested in a joint Aslan/Gandalf ticket.

Morgan: We all know Cthulhu wasn't listed because he'd kill us all.

Gene: Only if you could get Dr. Watson to convince Holmes to run.

Me, I'd vote for Gandalf.

message 277: by Murray (new)

Murray Moore Gandalf

Don't you think that Harry Dresden and Gandalf would occasionally butt heads since we all know that occasionally Sec State and Sec Def DO butt heads? Besides, I doubt that Mab, the Queen of Air and Darkness, Monarch of the Winter Court of Faerie would give up her Winter Knight (Harry Dresden) since the job is for life.

message 279: by [deleted user] (new)

Hermoine as long as it is the Hermoine who has graduated, etc. Matilda would also get my vote when older even though she could roll with anybody even at 8 (I think she was 8). Gandalf would probably be next.

So my choices:

1. Adult Hermoine with running mate Adult Luna
2. Adult Matilda with running mate Ms Honey
3. Gandalf the White with running mate Galadriel.

I would NOT want Daenerys Targaryen to win.

Amber Martingale Ashley wrote: "Gaius Octavian from the Codex Alera series gets my vote."

With Maximus as his running mate? Or would you choose Ambassador Varg as Tavi's running mate? I'd def,. not upset a 9 foot tall Canim VP!

message 284: by Amber (new)

message 285: by Mary (new)

Mary Atticus Finch

message 286: by Fanny (new)

Fanny Apumpkinreads Gandalf or Minerva McGonagall :D

message 287: by Will (last edited Nov 08, 2016 12:44PM) (new)

Will Byrnes Atticus would have had my vote until those Wikileaks about his earlier self. Tough to go with Dany. I just don't trust her running mates to stop themselves burning DC down. Gandalf is often in secret meetings. Where are the transcripts? And how about write-in votes for V----mort. I bet he could make the trains run on time, or else! Probably substitute a deep pit for the social safety net, though. Still, he could probably pick up at least 35% of the vote on name recognition alone. It's time to get tough, America! But I guess I will be casting my vote for the candidate who has demonstrated superior intelligence, a willingness to work harder than anyone else, an ability to endure seemingly unending mortal peril, the courage to return to battle time and time again, the determination to do the right thing despite insurmountable odds, a greater understanding of not only the mechanics of how things work, but the underlying interests, and the heart of a lion. Points, and votes for Gryffindor. I'm with Hermione.

message 288: by Eman (new)

Eman Gandalf all the way; he is a natural leader, and a wise man. I can trust him with my life. He was the mind behind saving the Middle earth.
I love HERMIONE as well. She cab makes a good president.

Helen Torres So difficult! , but I'd say Matilda!

message 295: by Chris (new)

Chris Evans F*** ya! Vetinari Vimes!

message 296: by Chris (new)

Chris Evans How about Leia Organa Solo / Gilad Pellaeon ticket? :D

message 297: by Fatema (new)

Fatema hermione or gandalf, but I would go hermione since if trump and hillary weren't the candidates she would be the first female president.

message 298: by Karina (new)

Karina I would Vote for America Singer. Even though shes not on there..... WHY!?

message 299: by Genevra (new)

Genevra Zaphod Beeblebrox for president! Just as dangerous as the other two, but mostly to himself and not others. It'd be, if nothing else, entertaining.

message 300: by Felipe Contardo (last edited Nov 08, 2016 05:37PM) (new)

Felipe Contardo Hermione, duh the actual Minister of Magic
