Want to Read More This Year? Join the 2016 Reading Challenge!

Posted by Jessica on January 1, 2016
Forget about drinking more water or getting in shape! Our favorite New Year's resolution is definitely this: Read More Books. And we're guessing it's yours, too. Make it easier by creating a reading goal and tracking your progress with the 2016 Reading Challenge on Goodreads!

Will it be one book every other month? Or maybe one book a week? A day? It's up to you! Your goal can be any size. To get started, just choose the number of books you'd like to read this year.

Not sure what to read next? Don't worry! Here are a few ways to build your want-to-read list on Goodreads:

- Recommendations: To get recommendations tailored just for you, rate books you've already read. The more books you rate, the better your recommendations will be!
- Giveaways: Did you know you can enter book giveaways for a chance to win free books?
- Lists: You can also browse the thousands of lists on Listopia—where you'll find categories ranging from classic (Best Books of the 21st Century) to niche (Best Alpha Male Alien Meets Human Heroine Romance).
- Goodreads Choice Award winners: Peruse the results of the recently announced 2015 Goodreads Choice Awards, with winners and runners-up in 20 categories!

And it never hurts to have some social support when working toward a goal, so check out the many Goodreads groups that host reading challenges across every topic, theme, and genre imaginable.

In 2015, Goodreads members pledged to read more than 94 million books! What is your 2016 goal? Tell us in the comments!

Elsa going for 100!

message 53: by Bella (new)

Bella Even though I exceeded my goals in 2015, I'm going to keep it the same. 400 books; 125,000 pages; 20% minimum must be non-fiction. I'm not going to increase the amount of books, but hoping to clear some of the longer books off my TBR shelf.

message 56: by Anne (new)

Anne I met my goal of 100 books in 2015. It was a close call at the end, so I am just aiming to go a few better this year at a goal of 105.

message 57: by Kerry (new)

Kerry 25 because I have other hobbies that I have goals for. :)

message 58: by Slame (new)

Slame 300 books

52, one per week!

message 60: by Ferne (new)

Ferne (Enthusiastic Reader) Although I met and surpassed my 2015 goal beyond my own wildest anticipation on 01-Jan-2015, I am selecting a slightly lower goal for 2016 of 75 books.

message 61: by Zaz (new)

Zaz 216, counting short stories, graphic novels, etc.

amma.keep.reading Let's see if I can make 80 happen.

message 63: by Sushi (new)

Sushi 250 books! I'm trying to finish the entire Baby-Sitters Club series (along with the spinoffs) this year and have around 150 books left for that challenge. This leaves 100 other books, which should be achievable between reading and listening to books.

message 64: by Tarun (new)

Tarun 50 books :)

message 65: by Moaz (new)

Moaz Elshenawy 79

message 66: by Jack (new)

Jack I totally underestimated my book count for last year, but then read a lot of children's book before sending out gifts during the year. Maybe I should estimate by category?

message 67: by Tasneem (new)

Tasneem No reading goal this year.I tend to feel anxious about the length of books and the time consumed during each when I set a goodreads goal . So why bother? My goal is to read long ass books without a care in the world just like used to do. College is just around the corner so lets not depress ourselves with a goal :)

message 68: by Tasneem (new)

Tasneem Danielle wrote: "I had a total of 609 last year including my re-reads. Wonder how many I can do this year :)"
HOW ON EARTH :')

message 69: by Beth (new)

Beth Carpenter Going for 25 books this year. I realize it is small potatoes compared to what some people read, but I am doing what I can.

message 70: by Vikas (new)

Vikas Target of 100 achieved for the last two years so for this year as well my goal is 100 which would be achieved with a mixture of Books plus Comics. Whatever is available on Goodreads and since I am a Librarian also I would add further books as well. Happy Reading fellow readers. Keep on Reading. I love reading and now I live to read.

message 71: by Shreya (new)

Shreya Turning 22 this year, so the target is 22 books to read this year! Growing up! :D

message 72: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Beth wrote: "Going for 25 books this year. I realize it is small potatoes compared to what some people read, but I am doing what I can."

Most people read zero books a year. So 25 is awesome.

message 78: by Θανάσης (new)

Θανάσης i read 154 books in 2015, but in 2016 i want to just read 50.

message 79: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Kauchis I started 2015 with 200 as my goal (which, before I had 3 kids was more than possible for me!) but wound up scaling it back to 150... I think I'll start with 150 this year and see what happens. I might increase it later if I feel I can meet a higher goal. :)

message 80: by [deleted user] (new)

216. It's a nice number to go with 2016 lol. I am reading an hour to an hour and a half a day and most of the books on my list are short so I can do it!

message 81: by Mary (new)

Mary Last year read 316 and my goal was 300. This year, set my goal at 305, since I have a two tests for work coming up.

Good Luck everyone!

message 82: by Jane (last edited Jan 01, 2016 08:55AM) (new)

Jane 70 books.
10 more than the year before.
Just like 2015 was 10 books more than the year I completed the challenge in 2013.

message 83: by Jessica (new)

Jessica I was pretty proud of myself for reading more than my goal...21 out of 12. i.e. a book a month read only at bedtime. Going for 25 in 2016.

Samy Toro Only 40 T_T

message 85: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia aka Taurendil Happy New Year everyone! And good luck for completing your challenges! ^_^

message 87: by Beth (new)

Beth My goal is 45 books. Let's see what happens this year!

message 88: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Brady 52

message 89: by Mikayla (new)

Mikayla I think 30 is a reasonable number to start with, but I will probably end up putting the number up like I did in 2015 to keep it challenging.

message 93: by Sam (new)

Sam Gaylor Going for 55!

message 94: by Gen (new)

Gen I'm gonna be taking some classes this year so I can't stretch myself and do my real goal (I read 285 last year and would like to stretch to 300), but I think 250 should be doable.

message 95: by Nea (new)

Nea Poulain 100, again :D

message 96: by Mark (new)

Mark Baker My goal this year is 100 books. Hopefully surpass it, but that's the goal I'm starting with.
