2015 - See Your Year in Books!

Posted by Suzanne on December 16, 2015
With just over two weeks to go until the end of 2015, it’s time to ask: How was your year in books? Did you read more than last year? What was the longest book you read?

Because so many of you love seeing Your Year in Books, we had a great time creating a fun, new design this year. Don’t keep it to yourself! Share it with your friends and spark a conversation about the books you’ve read.

To see Your Year in Books, click here!

"But it’s not the end of the year yet!" we hear some of you say. Never fear! Your Year in Books will keep updating until the very last moment of 2015. If you have plans to squeeze in some holiday reading and don’t want to peek until then, Your Year in Books will be waiting patiently.

Was it a good year of reading for you? What was the book you loved in 2015 that you wish more people would discover?<

Vanessa Soooo beautiful! ♡♡

message 2: by Taya (new)

Taya Iv Such a wonderful tool! Thank you for creating it. :) This was definitely a good year of reading for me. I wish more people would discover The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick! It changed me beautifully when I read it.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ I guess this is why our little icon was changed to circular in some instances. Very nice!

message 4: by Kyle (new)

Kyle This.
This excites me.
What a neat idea!

message 5: by Caro (new)

Caro Is a very nice idea to pull out the stats in that way! Looks amazing! Thanks to Goodreads for this very nice job!

message 6: by Joanne (new)

Joanne So pretty! Much nicer than the usual stats we have access to.

message 7: by Ingeborg (new)

Ingeborg Kooiman Thanks for these stats. I´d like to add one thing: the book I enjoyed most this year: The Collaborator

Mina Goodreads, have a chat with your marketing folks; the end message can use some help. What's with "and probably a lot of other things, too!"

"Probably" is uncertainty, and if you take it in the dictionary sense, you imply there's a percentage of people who are good at nothing else. "Probably" means "I hope we cater to at least some socially well-adjusted readers."

"Other things" is vague and together with "probably", it robs the ending of its strength. Take a look at your statistics. If the reader has more than three unrelated genres automatically substitute it with a compliment for diversity and open-mindedness, if otherwise, for dedication and focus. If the number of books is >30 compliment quest for knowledge, if <=30, see above.

You want to end with a powerful impression, not "and our focus groups suggested we needed an "and". "

"and we will return to the old layout today!" works too.

message 9: by Zaz (new)

Zaz It's pretty. I'd prefer the possibility to choose which covers are bigger, but as I won't share it, it's ok like this and it's a feature nice for the eyes :)
For whatever reason, I don't have the same pages count in this page and in the stats in My Books (number of books is good).

message 10: by Lanko (new)

Lanko Can I choose which covers get bigger? Also, our favorite books/series in the year? Or the way we order then around.
That would be great, thank you for the awesome feature!

message 11: by Simone (new)

Simone Oh, lovely! Thanks for this! :)

message 12: by Ginger (new)

Ginger Love this! Awesome job GR Team!

Tânia Now, this, I like!

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" I love this new feature. I enjoyed going over the books I read this year and knowing how many I read and which ones I liked the best.

Heidi Nice feature.

message 20: by ayanami (new)

message 21: by Susan (new)

Susan Lovely idea....thank you....

message 22: by Tytti (last edited Dec 16, 2015 03:33PM) (new)

Tytti How does it count the pages? Mine isn't the current number that I've read, adding the ones I am currently reading (either the total number of pages or where I am now) won't work either.

message 23: by Roxie (new)

Roxie Gallinger Love this feature...is it available all year round?

message 24: by Ruzza (new)

Ruzza Hahaha I tried it and it says I haven't read anyhing in 2015 :))))

message 25: by VMom (new)

VMom Oh, fun!
This will motivate me to remember to add my books to GR for the 2016 one.

message 26: by Dee (new)

Dee Ruzza wrote: "Hahaha I tried it and it says I haven't read anyhing in 2015 :))))"

Ruzza - it looks like you don't have date read set for many books, that might be why

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* I love it - you did a great job with this design! Hope it can stay around for memories sake and doesn't disappear after 2016.

message 28: by Kay (new)

Kay J How amazing, can't wait to start another year. This is so lovely.

Ruzza Dee wrote: Ruzza - it looks like you don't have date read set for many books, that might be why"
Thanks for the reply. I never use that. I usually mark a book as read when I finish it, but I realise now how the 2 would be different. I sometimes mark books that I read before I signed up on GR as read when I browse listopias.

I didn't realise this is based on that :)

message 30: by Bitchie (new)

Bitchie This is awesome. Now if only there were a decent, non-offensive to fic authors way to get all the freaking FANFIC I've read this year counted too, my year in books could be complete.

message 31: by Terry (new)

Terry That page count makes me wonder what else I had time for this year. I would as well, in some future version of this, to discover the range of publication dates (oldest book read, newest book read).

message 32: by Megan (new)

Megan Hoffman How cool!! Thanks Goodreads!

Tytti Meghan wrote: "Those of you who have page counts that seem somewhat off, did you by chance listen to any audiobooks this year? If so, we're pulling the page count from the most popular print version of the book s..."

That might be it, though depending on the language(s), translated books can be a lot longer or shorter, too, if that's how you are counting them.

message 34: by Linda (new)

Linda I, too love this...but the page count is understated if you categorize your books using "audio," "audible audio" or "audiobook"...bummer

message 35: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Jane I absolutely love this tool! I have already been sharing like crazy! :)

message 36: by Lobstergirl (last edited Dec 16, 2015 10:07PM) (new)

Lobstergirl When I clicked on "see YOUR year in books," it took me to a page where the button already said "UNLIKE", even though I had not liked anything. Which is just creepy. So I clicked UNLIKE in order to unlike it, and it took me to a page showing 3 people who had apparently liked the trivia question "Who wrote Therese Raquin?"

When I kept clicking on the horrible button, I got a red error message repeatedly.

No thanks. I don't need more giant Playskool images anyway. This is a page designed for millennials.

I hope that it will not appear in my feed that I LIKED this feature. Because I never liked it.

message 37: by Rachmi (new)

Rachmi As much as I like this new tool, I still prefer the old one. The one with chart, where I can see which books I gave 1 star, 2 star, 3 star, 4 star and 5 star all together without have to click each book.

message 38: by Zaz (new)

Zaz Meghan wrote: "Those of you who have page counts that seem somewhat off, did you by chance listen to any audiobooks this year?

No audio shelved on my side. I'd 2-3 books in other editions than english, so the (light) difference in pages count probably comes from there. Thanks for the reply :)

Rachmi - you can still see that, it hasn't gone away! Go to your My Books page and click on the "Stats" link in the top right hand corner. Click on "Details" next to the year you want to look at, and it will open up to show the books you read, grouped by the star rating you gave them. Enjoy!

message 40: by Courtney (new)

Courtney This is great!!! I can't wait to the end of the year to see the books pile up even more!!!

Is this something that happens just at the end of the year because I would love to see it like this the whole year round!!! : D

Thanks!!! : D

I thought it was gone! I've been searching for this stat since last month, lol. Thanks so much, and now I can say that I love this new tool :)

That would be great, thank you for the awesome feature!"

Choosing which covers appear bigger or being able to feature your favorite series is not possible, but thank you for your feedback about this! I've passed it along to the design team.

In regard to sorting-- the books are ordered according to the date read. As you scroll down the page you'll essentially be scrolling from January through to December!

AlegnaB † Meghan wrote: "Those of you who have page counts that seem somewhat off, did you by chance listen to any audiobooks this year? If so, we're pulling the page count from the most popular print version of the book s..."

That's great. I have listened to 119 audiobooks so far this year (nearly half of my total number of books), so my page count would be way off if you didn't do that. You did, however, miss at least one book. It's showing The Sign of the Beaver as my shortest book, with a total of three pages. Of course, that three is there because the audiobook is a little longer than three hours. It does make me wonder how many of my audiobooks are still using the audiobook "page" count, though. Probably not a lot were missed though, since the average length of my books was given as 285.

Thanks so much for this! I listen to a lot of audiobooks so it's nice to know they are also being counted in the pages. :)

Oh and the graph is so pretty! Great job here!
