Dee No harm if the chick lit is good, but a lot of it just isn't (from what I've read) so my point was that I don't think I've been selective enough, picking up books at random. There's been a few hits, but more misses this year.

message 152: by Deirdra (new)

Deirdra Halley It was a great reading year for me. Thanks to GO for helping find the good stuff and keeping track of it too!

message 153: by Vinay (new)

Vinay Jalla No money to buy new books this year. May be 2015 will bring more luck, financially. I could win the lottery - if I do I'm going to write more books and then give it away freely to everybody who can't afford to buy books.

message 154: by Courtney (new)

Courtney Too bad that my list is showing maybe half my books! Not showing the last 3 months. However, my read list is complete.....odd.

message 155: by Micebyliz (new)

Micebyliz i've read 428 books so far this year. I'm too lazy to fix all the dates in my book list to reflect that :) and besides, it takes time away from reading!!

I don't see the sharing buttons either, and my privacy setting are public.

You don't have to buy new books. Go o the library. Such a great place to get new and old books, classics, kids books and movies. That's what I do. I bought a few books too but also from my library during one of the several sales they have of books donated by patrons. I also borrow books from my doctor's office they have a book exchange there. Take one drop one. You don't have to drop one to take one either.

Basma 144 so far. with school and everything I'm pretty happy with the books I've read in 2014 :D

message 160: by Diane (new)

Diane Where is the read date on the mobile app?

Donna - Rosies.ReadingNook But is it still 2014 and will probably finish 2 more books

message 162: by Molly (new)

Molly Apparently, I either had more time to read last year or the funds to buy them...only read half as many in 2014. What's up with that? ROFL!

message 163: by Jen (new)

Jen Tasha,
you have it in one. Reading is not a chore or a competition it is a joy. For the cost of one movie ticket you get a whole day of entertainment (or more if it is a long book)rather than a couple of hours and you get to imagine the characters the way you see them in the story. I read everywhere too and can't wait to catch up on all the books I missed out on while writing assignments over the last 2 years. I never go anywhere without a book.

message 164: by Diane (new)

Diane For those with challenges of buying books - go to used book stores, start a share library in your dorm/neighborhood/friends and visit library on-line or in your neighborhood. Most libraries now are well connected! Keep Reading!

message 165: by Micebyliz (new)

Micebyliz We built a little free library this summer. Good responses to it but unfort also vandalism. It's worth doing though.

message 166: by A (new)

A Mine is missing a whole lot of books :-/

message 167: by Micebyliz (new)

Micebyliz I'm sorry to hear that. It's disappointing to find books thrown and torn too. Our library was pushed over and once the door was broken.

message 168: by Jen (new)

Jen Also try setting up a book exchange at work. It starts conversations with colleagues who you may not have known you had anything in common with.
Don't forget to log the books you have used all year for work too. May be labour intensive as the may not be in the system yet (8 of mine weren't)but you have read them and if they are good it may help others in the future.

People are just awful. I wanted to do a little free library. A few cities in the area have them but I do fear vandals. Good luck with yours. I hope the vandalism has stopped.

It is a shame when a few spoil it for the many but People on the whole are not awful. I work with teens and they are certainly not awful. They make me smile every day and most of the thousands I have taught over the years have become lovely adults. I find Stephanie's comment really sad. Most people are amazing.

message 171: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay I seem of have read enough though i may get this one I am reading now and maybe one more. It the reviews that I got to get updated more then any thing. I have a few that were read in the past year and I need to write the review. Though I am getting caught up a bit

Marileo Srikumar, I understand what you are saying and probably every body feels like you do... I know I do, for me is not trying to read lots and lots, i want to gain something from my readings and more important, to remember even a bit after a few weeks .. perhaps I should not have made that comment...obviously we Goodreads members always enjoy our books in different ways...chaoo

message 174: by Dee (last edited Dec 27, 2014 03:29AM) (new)

Dee Everybody reads in their own way, for their own reasons. Some books take a day or two, others take longer to digest and require more time to ponder. Some people like to read lighter books and go through dozens of them, others don't. In the end I don't really see anyone here competing, except with themselves - because it's the individual who sets their own goals and determines what they want to read and why.

Samit Ganguly it was a good year in reading because this year i read many books like 1)wuthering heights by emily bronte
2)anna karenina by leo tolstoy
3)emma by jane austen
4)the royal book of oz
a classic year for me!!!

because you didnt put them on currently reading list :p of you add them right on your 'read list' you have to put a date in the setting-tab from that book :p

message 178: by Adrian (new)

Adrian Most definitely it's been a great year in books, I have no idea how or what sales have done from a publishers point of view, but, from some amazing debuts by new authors to fantastic from the tried and true...I felt it was another year to share and share with fellow readers and new readers and to have those wonderful conversations where the joy of reading just shines!

message 179: by Lynn (new)

Lynn Pribus Right I just added two.

message 180: by Jay (new)

Jay For some reason the list doesn't show everything I read this year, even though I tagged it as read. Go figure.

message 181: by Srikumar (last edited Dec 27, 2014 09:20AM) (new)

Srikumar Krishna Iyer @Marileo - Np... Again, I agree with u....thnx 4 ur comment!!
End of the day, what matters is more & more people should start reading. And people who read less should start reading more.

So Nice to c here like minded people sharing thoughts on our reading experience, & unknowingly inspiring each other to read more & more & keep the one of the oldest habit every alive!!!

Now I am inspired to do a few things:

1) Complete more books .......this year.

2) Explore more genres, not sticking to the same ones....

3) Reading quickly (without compromising even a little in terms of enjoyment, knowledge or comprehention).

4) Write reviews of the books I read (which is a very effective way to register the important points related to the book that one has read. It is as good as writing down a gist of what we have read...)....

Hoep u all agree with me........

message 182: by Wampuscat (new)

Wampuscat I will probably make it to 42 books before the New Year hits. I went a bit lighter than last year, as far as number of books, but I still got in almost 16000 pages! I'm also at 91 reviews now, so I'll always be able to go back and 'remember' the books!

BTW: everyone saying they read 200-250 books... how many pages of words does that translate into? Are these comic books or children's stories? Magazines? That's almost a book a day! I can't fathom the reading speed necessary to accomplish this if you are talking about 300 page or 25000 word novels! *jealous* &/or *doubtful*

Thanks Stephanie. It's just that when you are the publisher of your own books - you need to sell more to write more!.

You also have to complete the "date read". That should fix it.

Susan So, weird question for the Goodreads people at large. Sometimes I "start reading" a book, but never finish it. This happens about once a year. How do I get it out of my "currently reading" status without marking it read?

You can click on the my books link for all of your books from the home page and then click the currently reading link and make sure it's in table view and delete it completely from that list.

message 196: by Mathijs (new)

Mathijs Bunck This was a great reading year for me as I found myself at ease enough again to enjoy reading during the spring of 2014. I set a goal of one book a week and was able to keep this promise to myself. I am already looking forward to 2015 and keeping up with newly published fiction, while working on my backlog of classic literature. Let's hope this loving relationship is lasting.

message 197: by Kimberly (new)

message 199: by Chris (new)

Chris I read so many books this year for my 5 bookclubs on goodreads and the one I host --- then the ones I really wanted to read because of recommendations of friends and patrons, still have stacks of them to read!! So, happy with what I read but never out of material to read whether online, ereader or in book format - which is where I do most of my reading!!

message 200: by Angela (new)

Angela My goal was 52 books for this year, and I just finished reading my 52nd book a few minutes ago. This year has been hectic with work and grad school so I wasn't sure if I' make it- but happy to report that I did. The year is not over yet so hopefully I'll read a couple more.
