Emma Just for the record, I didn't read any of these books. I hadn't even heard about any of them until right now...

message 52: by Ivonne (new)

Ivonne Stop being overdramatic, yes, the year is not over yet and you can still add books. You don't have to be so aggressive about Goodreads allowing users to check their books before time. Just saying...

message 53: by Diane (new)

Diane 10 books to read and 11 days to end of 2014!!! I'll be close! LOL

message 54: by Db2567 (new)

Db2567 396 books consumed so far this year. Getting close to 100,000 pages.
Next year aim to reduce this number to under 200.

Julia Dorothy wrote: "I was pleased that I read more books this year, but was disappointed that GoodReads couldn't count. I also keep a paper copy of what I've read, and 4 of my books didn't show up in GoodRead's versio..."

Check that the "Date I Finished This Book" field has a date in it. Last year I discovered that several of the books I read weren't counted, because that field didn't populate when I marked them as read. The challenge is just a count of books that say "2014" in the year section of that field.

Once I discovered that glitch I always make sure that field gets populated.

message 56: by Julia (new)

Julia The numbers people are putting in their comments are just blowing my mind.
200 for one person, 116 for another, 396 (seriously?!?!?!). I always thought I read a lot. Apparently not.

I don't understand how anybody can read so much. How do you find the time? I don't even have kids or anybody to take care of. I just have my job, the basic household duties everybody has (like cooking my food), and trying to lose weight. I guess I do work more than most.

Anyway, salute to you! Wish I could do it.

I just finished book #50 today, averaging 434 pages per book. Met my goal and I might get in 1-2 more this year.

Make sure the Date Read has a date in it. If you just marked it as read and rated it without entering a date it won't show up in your challenge count.

message 58: by kelley (new)

kelley Gail wrote: "I was wondering how it counts, I know that I have read and added to Goodreads more than 20 books this year, but my year in books only shows 6 of them..."

If you just clicked "read" it won't count towards any challenge. If have to make sure to enter a date in the Date I finished this Book part of the "review." You don't have to enter a review, just the date you finished the book. I think it will work if you just enter the month and year.

message 59: by kelley (new)

kelley Wanda wrote: "It says I've only read 4 books in 2014. This makes no sense - I have way more on my list that I marked as read and have rated."

It has to have a date that you read it. Hit the "edit review" button on the books page. At the bottom there is "Date I finished the book." Fill that out. I don't think you have to put a complete date but if there is no date there, it doesn't know that you read it this year.

message 60: by Bonni (new)

Bonni Sweet I'm still in the middle of 3 now.

message 61: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Price It's been the most amazing year of reading for me!! Not another like it has 'ever' happened and that's with a million thanks to this site taking me to places I would never have thought of going. Trying new books I'd never have found without being here. It's been a incredible and memorable beyond words alone. Still many more to go if life would just stop the punches a little.

message 62: by cypt (new)

cypt I'm having a problem with this. When I try to see my own year in books, "No items to show" comes up. Does it have to do with me clearing the dates out when I add books? Is there a way to get around that, like seeing your year in books by the date added?

Shauna Dorothy wrote: "I was pleased that I read more books this year, but was disappointed that GoodReads couldn't count. I also keep a paper copy of what I've read, and 4 of my books didn't show up in GoodRead's versio..."

I agree! I was disappointed in this program. It included two books that I began and didn't finish, and forgot many books that I actually did finish. Hopefully, Goodreads gets it together next year.

I'm not a a Goodreads employee, however from what I've always known is that in order for a book to be counted and added to your challenge books it 'has' to be put in the review box with the year it was actually read. No way the computer/program can calculate if it's not marked and saved properly. Again, I'm not an employee, but it seems the only logical way for it to work for you. I hope you get it worked out! ~*Happy Reading & Happy Holidays*~

P.S. I say that because at one point I had a couple missing as well and when I checked the dates in my review boxes they were accidentally marked wrong by myself. Once I changed the date properly all was right.

message 66: by Gemma (new)

Gemma Fasheun Well I wish I could have read more books this year but I can't read as fast as others in here. I hope next year will be better and hopefully I'll become a published author too.

Just looking at the posts quickly... but if you do not find your book... YOU can add them yourself. Plus, many a time when trying to look it will say not there but when I put in the ISBN number it then shows up.

I personally don't get too hung up on the version of the book and will click on any of the versions that has the same amount of page numbers. I don't worry because I usually don't comment and that I never plan to read the book again and just want it counted.

Maybe that helps a little.

Jeff Wanda wrote: "It says I've only read 4 books in 2014. This makes no sense - I have way more on my list that I marked as read and have rated."

You may want to check to see if you just marked them as read or if you added the date finished. If you don't mark the date it won't count them for this year. If you don't know the exact date that's ok just make sure to put the year down.

Click on My Books and select what book you are looking to change and then click on edit review. You will see the date added and date finished. You need to make sure that the date finished is marked 2014. I hope this helps!

It's no different than when networks do their "Year in Review" before Christmas. And when school starts in around September and you're already seeing Christmas decorations for sale go up in the stores. I see this link as a way to kick my butt into overdrive to get those last few books read for my goal (4 behind right now).

message 77: by Keri (new)

Keri Tough year on the book reading goal, but still should be able to get 10 more books in before the EOY. Between the DIY house fiasco and gaining my PM Cert, it put the goal in jeop...but it was worth it! Watch out next year!

message 78: by Sushi (last edited Dec 21, 2014 12:11PM) (new)

Sushi I like this cover view! One gripe, though: the books are shown in groups of twenty and rows of six. But short of turning on infinite scroll, you can only show multiples of 20 at a time (20 through 100). The remaining four spots in the fourth row bug me more than they should, but really, showing four rows of five books would be more aesthetically pleasing.

Ten days left in 2014, seven books to go until 120. Let's see if I can pull that off.

Edit: It seems like the increments have changed since I last looked at them. My point still stands since only 30 and infinite scroll will show nice full rows of six.

message 79: by Yaaresse (new)

Yaaresse Or maybe they're doing it now so they can take Christmas and New Year's off themselves. :)

message 80: by Allison (new)

Allison It was a good year for me. I haven't read a lot compared to other people, but compared to what I WASN'T reading in the past several years, this year was HUGE! I am looking forward to much more reading in 2015!

Maybe their books are shorter or have less text than your books? I read a lot of comic books and manga, which inflates my book count. I also have to use public transport Mo-Fr, that gives me ~2 hours of reading time each day.

message 82: by Neville (last edited Dec 21, 2014 03:03PM) (new)

Neville Will finish my 115th today. First year doing this - only predicted 75.

Reading at normal rate so feel quite pleased with myself. 2 hours a day on public transport - what else would I do.

message 83: by Poindexter (last edited Dec 21, 2014 04:12PM) (new)

Poindexter Aiming for 100 books - 90 down so far, so I need to read 1 a day until the end of the month (which I've been doing all of December, so I should be able to make it with any luck!) I started off wanting to read 50, then 75... Making it to 100 would be amazing, but I've smashed the goal I set myself at the beginning of March, so anything above that is a bonus.

Next year, I'll aim for 150, which I should easily be able to do :)

My secret is audiobooks - I listen to them while I'm working. I get around 5-7 hours a day of listening time so you can see how easy it is to get through lots of books quickly. And I also read "proper books" as well, in between when I have a bit of spare time ;P.

message 84: by Sandy (new)

Sandy How funny I read everyday at work--(actually listen to Audible) yet I forget to put my books in--so this only shows 4 books when I have heard/read so many more!

Chevalier_de_fortune There are so many books I have not read in 2014. And there will be many books I will not read in 2015. The more I live the more are the books I don't read.

Lol! I don't really think that the numbers matter Julia, it's the fact that you're reading and hopefully being entertained in your "down-time" ;-)

I wanted to cut down on the amount of telly I watched this year and reading has helped me achieve that.

What I'd do is take a screenshot and post the image of your books galore for the year (if that's your wish) to whatever people/platform you want. That will leave your goodreads privacy settings out of it.

message 96: by [deleted user] (new)

It was a year of challenge for me. Last year I read 10, this year 20. I had to find smaller books to reach my goal. Next year, I've selected thicker books so my goal will be under 20 for sure, I'm not a fast reader but I love to read and love books. My favorite was the Hobbit.
Yes, there are a few more days in December, unfortunately I won't be able to finish the two books I'm currently reading. Happy Good Reading fellow readers!

message 97: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Green DesRoche I discovered audiobooks this year, which, oddly, spurred my desire to read even more printed word in my non-driving spare time. And it's amazing how many books you can get through when you crack them open in place of watching the same old stuff on TV.

message 98: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl I have read some really good books this year and that is a good part of why I participate in the reading challenge. I am working through a couple of series which are quickier reads and in 2015 want to try to do more non fiction. I set my goal at what I thought was reasonable so as not to have the problem of trying to read short or light reading books which I do also enjoy. I kept adjusting my goal as I seemed to get through a lot more than I expected. I do have some 600-800 page books on my list so will try and tackle at least one a month if possible. Happy reading to all!

message 99: by [deleted user] (new)

Hmm, I too listened to audio books this year but could not settle whether that's considered reading, if it is then I can add 7 to my total making it 27.

YAHOO

Marleen Not such a good year for me.
I can't see anymore through my right eye.
And in October this year I got an operation on my left eye of retinal detachment. I couldn't see for 5 months untill the operation. But now I read again with very thick glasses and a magnifying glass.
